Hello Darren, We took a few of your recommendations, and they were good recommendations. The curry hut The golden plaice but the best one was City spice by a country mile. I paid about 70 quid for the both of us with popadoms for two 3 pints of beer, a shared starter, and 2 mains. Now, the quality was fantastic we have been back 3 times since but 50 quid for one person no not me

The one thing I love about Indian restaurants, apart from the food is they still use tablecloths. They take pride in their place and in the food. £51 is a lot of money especially at the moment for 1 person but you do get what you pay for. If the food is that good I don’t mind paying that but it would normally only be for a special occasion. On the flip side if I fancied a Indian I begrudge paying less to get a cheaper Indian if it does not taste good. Great vlog

Hi Darron, yes I totally totally get you. Eating out is ever so nice. Lunch or dinner. I do strongly believe that restaurants, hotels and the whole hospitality industry are really playing the back end of covid AND this nonsense of the new cost of living crisis! I totally think as you say a casual lunch on your own should simply not cast that amount. You are fighting a losing battle I’m afraid with restaurants now as they ever so sadly will rip you off.😢😢

This is a tough one regarding the price, I have to say the food look superb and you certainly let us know the quality was of a very high standard. Would I have paid £51? I would have preferred £40 tops. So I guess that’s one to swerve in the future Darren. But I must say an amazing Vlog just rather expensive for you 😞 Isn’t it funny how people get interested in the right hand left hand “thing?” I’ve been called south paw, cack handed and all sorts in my time, funny thing is… as a left hander I put the folk in my left hand, obviously! So it makes perfect sense as a right handed person you’d put the folk in your right hand. Anyway, Shukriya 🙏🏻 ❤

The food and the restaurant looked great. The crisp clean table linen. The food a tadge over garnished for my taste,but that said it made my mouth water.But the price made my eyes water! If you look you can still find "cheap eats" However if the food is Off the Charts, and the meal makes you happy,it was worth it. I used to say don't look at the right side of the menu,today it's a must for most people. Eating out is a treat,be it your local cafe or a 5 star restaurant or hotel .Enjoy a meal with family or friends ,even a solo trip and a snack can kick start any day.

I was in London a few days ago for a city break with family. I made a special visit to City Spice based on yours and Macmaster's videos and was pretty disappointed. They only changed the table cloth when I insisted, food was mediocre and service was pretty poor. Perhaps I have been spoiled by the quality of Indian restaurants in Jersey but give me a shout if you're ever over here and I will take you to a good one. On balance however, I will let you off as I visited Pellici's last year with my daughter which was 11/10 and The Regency Cafe a couple of days ago which was a solid 9!! Cheers

Good video. Thank you. £51.95 is pretty steep, considering the majority are on minimum wage and/or benefits. However, it is all relative. If the basic ingredients were purchased and cooked at home, accounting for time, it probably wouldn’t be too different to cook for one. I guess wholesale foodstuff has risen in line with supermarkets and many items have doubled over the last couple of years. £4.50 for Heinz Ketchup. £9.95 for a jar of instant coffee and over £5 for 500g of Lurpak spreadable ‘butter’

The bill for the Indian meal was a lot for one customer but the meal is 1st class. In the city of London there are establishments who are there for people who want to pay for the service. The price alone keeps the riff faff away a bit harsh but true.
@julianboon996 Жыл бұрын
Hi Darren, £51 for one person lunch seems pricey however as you say you had starters, sides and a beer so it all adds up and the City is rarely cheap in any restaurant. We did follow one of your recommendations and when to The India. I think we had the fixed price lunch for myself and the Mrs and that came out at around £55 for both of us. I'd like to try the Rajasthan but they don't seem to offer set price lunch, perhaps they should consider it.

Good idea Darren, to share your vids. I'm hopeful that in the near future I can visit London and if so I will be visiting some of the many good eateries that you have reviewed. In particular, the Ivy and the curry establishments. Brick Lane is high on my agenda . Wow the price was way over the top. I have a really good Indian restaurant in my area that produces amazing top quality food and has a lot of dishes on the menu that I had never heard of before. I am 74 and have a wealth of experience eating Indian/Pakistani food. My locals highest priced main is £16 and is open at lunchtime which is rare up here in the North East. The place El Raj near Sedgefield is spotlessly clean, the staff amazing and the food is 'almost' to die for.

I used to go to my favourite Italian restaurant in North Kent for lunch and evening meals when I was working. I'm retired now and have hardly been there post Covid and during the cost of living crisis. I went back recently, had lunch and like you had a fit when I got the bill! 70% + more than I used to pay. I can just about afford Subway now! Sad, but I'm being priced out of all the things I used to enjoy!

If the food is wonderful then i guess i conclude one must check the prices when ordering. The food did look amazing (as I assumed it would going off your previous visits). As for value for money, the most I've spent on myself for a meal has been around the £60-70 but that has been for the fancy all you can eat buffet or an afternoon tea here in Melbourne and both have been amazing and completely worth it in my opinion. If I'm ordering set dishes off a menu I'd expect to spend around £50 for 2 x people (give or take) but London may be very different to Melbourne.

Great vlog as always. Refreshingly honest. Food looked excellent but certainly not exceptional for a high end establishment. The price however was absurd. It wasn’t even a “chef’s special”, just a standard chicken dish. Totting it up in my head as you went along and bearing in mind the location and the current inflationary climate, I 😮had it around forty smackers. How they got that over 50 is extraordinary. I’m afraid those of us of normal means will just be cutting back on going out/takeaways which will itself force the prices up even further if businesses are to survive. Vicious circle and it will be breaking point soon for many I fear.

Nice one Darren, the grub looked excellent in honesty, was it worth nearly £52? For me, I thought you were going to say around £40, which in my opinion would be about the mark in London these days, can't help wondering if some of these eateries are using their good food reviews to justify their high prices, but hey, if Folks pay it, can you blame 'em? We all know what rents, Council Tax etc are like in the smoke, so it's a difficult one to call really. As someone said earlier, "maybe get the same order in your other two favourites, and make a comparison, cost & quality wise". Take care.

Its £51 because you are on the fringes of the square mile. Add on the cost of living crisis, and that meal will generally be cheaper outside the city. If you think about it Darren, their clientele is higher earners, their colleagues and clients. So if they are serving up good quality food, they can charge a bit more. I am Indian, and when you said you thought the vegetarian dish was off the charts I chuckled, because most Indians eat vegetarian food. So whilst you might think you are getting Indian food, it may be that the owners are from Bangladesh. Regardless, if you want to try some more Vegetarian food there are restaurants in Drummond Street, Euston and a bit further out in Wembley/Kingsbury serving authentic food. You will know you are getting the real deal in these places because 90% of the people eating there are Indian. And I promise you, it will be much much cheaper.
