This was very interesting. Of course, as a complete beginner in modest-scale video-making and post-production, programs such as Nobe extend far beyond my personal graticules -- and will remain there because I'm not afflicted with acute GASP (Gear Acquisition Syndrome Poverty). But imagine my delight when I was able to follow along, understanding some things and getting the basic points of others. The software looks superbly well designed! Thanks for sharing your insights about it.

This software looks really interesting! I'm a shader, colour correcting in live multi-camera enviroments, and sometimes the hardware scopes we get are far from ideal. I'm hoping to use this with a blackmagic ultrascope mini on my surface X. I'm wondering if this software will run well on the new ARM chips, but if it does this is a game changer since I'll have very advanced scopes on any job, regardless of what's provided to me. You can't compare these scopes to Resolve. Resolve is a freeware, which has the only purpose of driving hardware sales for Blackmagic. That does not make other software developer's work free of any value. The price is actually pretty fair. Have you ever seen what a Tektronix Waveform Analyser costs? Or Leader? Or AJA Image analyser? You'd be glad to pay what OmniScope costs. Sure, Resolve has it's own scopes and if these are enough for you, there is no point in buying something better. But if you require something better, OmniScope is cheap. Why do you think people still buy other grading softwares, such as Assimilate SCRATCH, SGO Mistika, or Filmlight Baselight? All of them more expensive than Resolve. It's because they do something that Resolve doesn't and that is required. Again, if you don't need the extra juice, that's fine. No point in buying. But if you do, this is fucking cheap.
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 3 жыл бұрын
also remember, DaVinci Resolve Studio is ridiculously cheap - that doesn't mean that no other software can be sold above that price. These scopes are well worth the money IF and ONLY IF you want added features in your scopes. if not, Happy days - you have scopes in DaVinci Resolve. All the best.

Great video Darren. Just downloaded the trial. Do you know if there are any issues working in DaVinci Wide Gamut? If you use it as on OFX then the plugin gets the timeline colorspace. Which means it gets DaVinci WG and OmniScope treats it as Rec709. This is why your scopes look incorrect. The quick workaround for it is to use built-in plugin Color Transform and create a "node sandwitch" WG -> Rec709 -> OmniScope -> WG. The same workaround for ACES is described here: timeinpixels.com/2019/06/nobe-display-in-aces/ Hope this helps!

Hello Mike. I don't doubt for a moment that many are grading blindly on uncalibrated monitors. It's keeping me in business, put it that way :))) I have no answer for grading not knowing what your reference is. Its not the end of the world if not broadcast, but I wouldn't get another commission from the BBC if my monitor was not calibrated and my look was affected accordingly. However, I appreciate not everyone has to be broadcast compliant. An ipad pro is going to give you a very good reference image for example. Back to your question.."How do we grade blindly"..? If they drop the price by half they certainly get a lot more customers, I'll would jump at it. After all when da vinci systems had Resolve they had a hundred customers in 2008, within two years Blackmagic had over a million customers, even today with the neverending limited time offer of a free Speed editor, perhaps they're think again. Sorry for the Winge Darren, looking forward to the next episode Thanks again for your time

Andrew, keep in mind that DaVinci Resolve is not the product that brings profit to BlackMagic. They treat it as a marketing tool giving it away for free (even the studio version - the price doesn't reflect the software's value, at all). Blackmagic is primarily a hardware company and DaVinci Resolve drives their hardware sales. That said, we are going to release a new version of OmniScope - something between Photo and Pro. It will be aimed at video professionals but some high end features will be disabled in that version.

Hi Darren great video, I have been thinking about upgrading my Scopes to Nobe, So I can have scopes that work in HDR, I have a separate system for the scopes, and at first I thought just a simple decklink mini recorder 4K would do, but then started wondering about the color precision and the mini monitor only works in SDI at 4:2:2 10 bit, so started to wonder if I would need the 8K decklink pro, which is the only one that guarantees UHD 4K 12 bit 4:4:4 even at 60p, have you done any tests on that? any thoughts?

HI Darren, here is a question I can't seem to find a clear answer to in the forums, or in the Resolve Facebook Group or the manual. I have some color bars I purposly exported from AVID with illegal video levels. When I bring them into Resolve 17, no matter what I do it brings the levels into rec 709 range. I made sure that I have the Safe levels turned off, and I have the Data levels in the project settings set to retain sub-black and super white data, yet the scopes only show the video pushed to legal rec 709 levels. and In clip atributes it doesnt make a difference either. Also I exported the clip with retain super black and white data in the deliver advanced menu and it is exporting with pushing the levels to legal levels. I want to be able to export the illegal bars and also see the bars pushing above legal in the scopes. Is this a bug? I have tried every combination of things you can imagine and can't make the bars I brought in illegal. I even changed the color management and that did nothing.

@@giznofx I know that. I'm saying, you should not compare the two. OmniScope does more than Resolve's scopes. A Baselight does more in terms of color than Resolve. And Pro Tools does more in Sound than Resolve and Avid doe smore in Editing than Resolve. They all cost more than Resolve. If you need that "more" - then then the price is justified. Resolve is offered at this insanely low price, because it is a vehicle for Blackmagic to drive hardware sales. But that doesn't make it the measure of all things. Other software vendors do not sell hardware to cross-finance their software development. In fact, MOST software vendors do not do that. Does that make their work less valuable? No, it does not. And to add: OmniScope is not a plugin to Resolve. It's a standalone app, that can be hooked in via a plugin. And the features it offers are amazing compared to Resolve's own scopes. Again - if you don't need these features, no point in buying OmniScope. But it's not fair to compare it's price to Resolve's. Maintaining development for a software like that is a full time job. It should be paid accordingly. And the price of OmniScope is 100% justified, considering what it offers.
