Lucas had every right to defend his teammate and had to send Dawkins and the 76'ers a message that they weren't going to be bullied. The '77 Finals in my opinion, remains one of the best. After Philly won the first two, Portland clearly demonstrated that they were the superior team by winning four straight..
@scott1564
@scott1564 Жыл бұрын
Lucas wasn't "defending" a teammate by throwing a sucker punch from behind. Besides, the only person Dawkins hit was Collins, his own guy. Had Lucas grabbed Dawkins, or something of the sort, you might have a point, but he didn't. You're right about the rest: his intent was to "send a message" -- which has nothing to do with defending a teammate. You need to get your story straight here with the explanation: was it to defend his teammate or send a message? You can't have it both ways. Contrary to popular belief, I don't really think the incident had much to do with the series result. The 76ers were a flawed team (the incident may have exposed this) in many ways. It should have been a 76ers sweep but Portland outcoached them and in many ways was the better team albeit with inferior talent. Who knows what went on in the 76ers locker room after this game. Whatever it was MAY have done them in.

@@scott1564 Sucker punched? Dawkins body slam Bob Gross, then sucker punch his own teammate Doug Collins, and then ran backward into Lucas' path, who finally leveled him with an elbow.
@scott1564
@scott1564 Жыл бұрын
@@jcpenny3606 When you hit someone from behind, that is a sucker punch. Dawkins didn't body slam anyone. He held on to the ball, just like Gross did. Either of them could have let go at any point, but Dawkins was way stronger. I've seen this in hundreds of games over the years -- two players, both with a firm grip on the ball and one gets the better of the other by getting better control of the ball better. Don't want to be taken for a ride? No problem. Let go of the ball. Everyone wants the guy who gets control to suffer a penalty (usually a foul) without realizing that the guy that held on would have done exactly that had he either been stronger or in a more advantageous position -- in other words, he was trying to do the SAME THING, he just couldn't do it. Not defending Dawkins' actions after that -- he deserved to be thrown out. But thinking of Lucas as anything but a thug in this instance is absurd. I could have gotten a good punch on Dawkins had he not been looking. Essentially, you were wrong about most of what you wrote.
@jcpenny3606

@@scott1564 When a dude is so out of control that he clocks his own teammate, you're a "thug" unless you use Marquess de Queensbury rules to engage the guy? Come on, man, that's feeble. This isn't all that complicated - Dawkins punched his own teammate and then was stupid enough to run backwards into a dude who saw an out of control lunatic who had just sucker punched someone coming his direction, so he put him on his ass. Any player that wasn't afraid of Dawkins (and Lucas wasn't afraid of anybody) would have done the same thing and they'd have been right to do it.

Dawkins and Gross contesting a rebound, and Dawkins uses his size to rip not only the ball away from Gross, but since gross arm was still on the ball, the move brought Gross right over the top and down on the court hard. If anyone was going to pissed about that, it's Gross, (and he did) so Dawkins tried insult on injury so to speak, and throws a running punch at Gross, who's being attended to by Dawkins' teammate Doug Collins, and the punch lands on Collins. I remember this clearly. Philadelphia was a heavy favorite to win the championship. Before this happened, I actually liked Dawkins and Lucas. Dawkins threw Gross down hard on the floor and I believe should have received a technical foul. I cannot blame Gross for being mad. I already had respect for Lucas but gained even more respect for him when he came to his teammate's defense. Mo Lucas was tough as was Dawkins - and I am glad this fight never materialized. May both DD and Mo RIP. Too bad Walton had problems and a bad relationship between the Trailblazers and him developed in 1978 because Portland had the capability of winning multiple championships.

Before the game even started, Lucas walked over to the Philly bench and everyone was thinking “uh oh, what’s gonna happen?” Lucas stuck his hand out and shook guys’ hands to say all’s good so let’s just play. That seemed to create a psychological advantage because Portland then ran the table the next 4 games to take the series after being down 0-2. Phenomenal!

Rudy was sprinting to go help break up a fight, and Kermit hit him squarely in the face with Rudy on a dead run. Rudy needed facial reconstruction surgery, his face was detached from his skull and he was leaking spinal fluid into his brain cavity.

There was a Sports Illustrated article after this about the "NBA Enforcers" of the time. Lucas, Dawkins, Bob Lanier, Kermit Washington, Calvin Murphy, and some others were mentioned. You can find it on-line.

Did Lucas sucker punch Dawkins
@scott1564
@scott1564 Жыл бұрын
The only punch he landed was a sucker punch from behind. When he faced him straight up, it looked like those sock-em robots of the 70s. I don't think either one of them could fight their way out of a jr. high class but in fairness to both, neither would want the business end of clean punch to the jaw from the other. Of course, Kermit Washington found out what happens to people who deliver punches like that, so its probably better that neither Lucas nor Dawkins knew how to fight. Bottom line: this so-called fight was laughable.

It really wasn't a fight between Dawkins and Lucas. Dawkins just got hit, He didn't hit him back. Just danced and waited on people to get in between.
@ash27slick74

Wrong. I knew Darryl Dawkins personally. He said that he wanted to go at Maurice Lucas because not only did he get sucker-punched, but also rabbit punched by the master of cheap shots back then, Maurice Lucas. Rest assured, as big and as strong as Dawkins is, the last thing he needs is "people to get in-between."
@millionsinlife
@millionsinlife 11 ай бұрын
@@ash27slick74 Well, with all that said, we're looking at the video, and if he wanted to, as big and strong as he was, no one would've been able to keep him off of Lucas if that's what he really wanted to do. This wasn't a high school fight where people were going to just circle around and watch them go toe to toe. So knowing him personally or not, it doesn't change what everyone sees in the video, which is him taking a couple steps and 11 steps backwards.I've seen much smaller men who actually wanted to get at someone have to be tackled to the floor to stop them. It wasn't needed here. So again you knowing him personally is irrelevant to what it looks like in view of everyone. He didn't even throw a punch at Lucas. Lucas hit him in the back of the head and the swung at him when they were squared up. Dawkins never swung once at him. But he managed to hit his own teammate before that part and that was while he was still backing away. So you can say "WRONG" but you can't show anything different from what we see. I understand you defending him because you say you know him but you can't change history because you say you know him "personally". lol

@@ash27slick74 Sure looked like Dawkins was the "master of cheap shots" as he took a shot at Gross while Collins was holding him. Then he quickly backpedaled away, which is why Lucas hit him from behind. Watch the film again. Dawkins quickly backs up, and after throwing that cheap shot thoroughly deserved the one from behind he got from Lucas. Then when they square up Lucas throws a quick punch and again Dawkins backpedals away as fast as he can and hopes people will jump in between them, which they do. Dawkins can say whatever he wants about "wanting to go at Lucas," but I saw it live -- and I wasn't a fan of either team -- and the first thing I thought was that Dawkins was flat-out afraid of Maurice Lucas.

Mo Lucas head cased Dswkins at the player introductions of game 3 in Portland. The Sixers starters were introduced first, then the Blazer starters. They saved Mo for last. Instead of going to his fellow Blazer starters, he went straight to Dawkins and shook his hand. The Blazers won the next four games to take the series. Dawkins was not a factor the rest of the series.

It's interesting how even just 10-15 years later, when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, I never saw 2 dudes fighting like so old school like this with "their dukes up". Not the Bad Boy Pistons or Charles Barkley, MJ, nobody did this style of fighting from the 70s. Nobody! Imagine if we transported these guys from 1977 to 2024, they are still young and prime players but when a fight happens they assume their boxing stance. I just figure current NBA players would fall down laughing at these dudes, especially if they say something like "Come on SUCKA!"

Lucas could handle his dukes very well, and could have been a heavy weight contender instead of a b-ball player. Dawkins was just a loose cannon, and very lucky they broke it up before Lucas would have finished him
