The secret of Darth Maul's success was Ray Park's obvious martial arts ability and his intensity whenever he was on screen. Ray Park seethed and paced. He embodied the Sith's reliance on strong emotions to power them. As menacing as Darth Vader was in his armor, Darth Maul's facial expressions and body language were the most intimidating things to me. Ray Park doesn't get enough credit for the acting he did as Darth Maul. There's a reason why his fighting scenes are considered legendary even over 20 years later.

I don't know why this is such a popular opinion. Maul had no character going for him, he was just the muscle to Sidious' brains, so to speak. It would've been boring to see Maul pretend to be anything more than this fearsome Sith Warrior. Which is why when they did bring him back in clone wars for fan service they pretty much ruined what gravitas he held in the movie. Maul's not supposed to have a backstory. Like Yoda, the mystery behind him is what makes him cool. Dooku by contrast is the kind of character where backstory would've been much appreciated since he is a complex figure. He's a former Jedi and was Qui-Gon's master. He truly believes in joining the Separatist cause for the good of the galaxy. He wants Obi-Wan to learn what he sees is the truth. He's a conflicted character, and spending more time fleshing him out would've done more to enrich the prequels.
@AotearoaChef7 жыл бұрын
I agree, he should have beaten obi wan and the film should have followed obi wan trying to overcome his failure to defeat him. The prequels should have been obi wans story

There were so many potentially excellent villains in the prequels, Maul, Dooku and Grievous are all very interesting characters. I know the prequels are meant for Anakin’s fall to the dark side but a few more scenes would have really helped. Each one of those characters could easily get a full movie and still have plenty of story left.
@AishaVonFossen6 жыл бұрын
I had kind of a split reaction to Darth Maul. On one hand, I saw a lot of advertising before Phantom Menace was released, and he looked like he was gonna be an elaborate new villain, like a really big deal. On the other hand, though, when I saw the movie, I was disappointed to see he had little to no dialogue, and I felt like it was kind of a wasted opportunity to get to know him better, especially since he was around for only one movie. Though some say that his silence makes him more intimidating and mysterious, which I can kinda see, but for me personally, I like my characters speaking more, especially if they have a lot of buildup to them. I'm so glad, though, that Maul got a lot more attention in following Star Wars media, he deserved it. And holy hell, they did a damn good job with him! The ways he survived and dealt in his own way with what happened afterward were very believable. And he actually turned out to be a pretty sympathetic character, again, in his own way. There were a lot of things he did that were terrible, so he was still solidly a villain, but man, was his life sad! He could never really win against his enemies, he never really had the approval of his master, and his life was completely wrecked at the end. Talk about getting chewed up and spat back out. It was interesting, and honestly a relief, to see that at the end, Obi-Wan seemed to show him some compassion in Star Wars Rebels. The way he held Maul as he was dying was really quite touching, and intriguing. It makes me think, if they weren't so pitted against each other being Jedi and Sith, what would they have been like towards each other in everyday life? Despite everything Obi-Wan suffered because of Maul, Maul's most hated enemy ends up showing him mercy at the end, and caring enough to be there for him in his last moments when no one else would or could be. Also, I love what Ray Park brought to the role. He is very physically fit to do a lot of Maul's acrobatic moves. Though I thought it was kinda funny that his voice turned out to be too soft. LOL Park seems like a really nice and funny guy in real life, too, I watched his Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim a few years ago talking with James Arnold Taylor, and he looked like a ton of fun to be around. And of course, Sam Witwer is always fun, I first heard him when he voiced the Son in Clone Wars. He does a pitch perfect imitation of Palpatine, too, and he was perfect for Darth Maul as well. He also seems like a friendly and funny guy in real life. :) I also appreciate that he had his own dedication to the character to bring him more to life, and he did a great job. :D

I never really thought about his death in Rebels. Anger was always Mauls weakness. If he gave his actions a 2nd thought things could have been alot different. Imagine Obi-wan and Maul watching over Luke as a child.
@KreatorDestroyer4 жыл бұрын
It's some kinda paradox, as long as anger saved him from being dead after the "TPM" duel! His strenght is his own weakness!!
@MrBell-iq3sm3 жыл бұрын
Anger yes, but more pride than anger. He overcame Obi-Wan on multiple occasions, but it was his pride his desire to toy with him that allowed Obi-Wan to come back at him.
@Gadget-Walkmen2 жыл бұрын
LOL Just no. His death was perfect as it was in Rebels, the thought of him turning good is just repulsive for his design and character.

@wasteoftime58487 жыл бұрын
Lucas always seems to misjudge the value of a character. He doesn't just toss good characters too quickly but gives too much screen time to things like jar jar. Dooku should have had more screen time throughout the prequels.
@keithbeckett13497 жыл бұрын
Its funny how some of the most loved and coolest characters lasted so little time. Brings up the question, how much do we like these characters due to their short lifespan/screen time ? The fact we see so little of them slowly allows them to become fan favorites, maybe more-so than if they had been in every film ?. One thing that is certain though, regardless of them being killed off, is their coolness level. Even General Grievous, Dooku, Jango Fett....so many baddass characters that don't really last long. Yet we got more than we wanted of Jar Jar etc.
@Robbstark20247 жыл бұрын
i got my maul fan service, just waiting on disney who will probably fail to put boba fett in their filler episodes of rebels
@chriscryer70877 жыл бұрын
I agree with Maul, Boba Fett not so much, I never understood how people love him so much when he did even less then Darth Maul in the movies. From what I remember in TESB Boba Fett never even killed anyone. imo Boba Fett is a very over rated character
@keithbeckett13497 жыл бұрын
But we don't exactly like them due to their killcount etc, I mean...how many people do we really see Darth Vader kill ? we know he can...but he doesnt just go about killing people...he has intimidation and respect, I guess its about whats implied by the character, not exactly what we see them do. Just as we know Vader is a beast who could take on pretty much anyone and win, Boba Fett is a bounty hunter...he has an awesome set of armour with cool weapons, so we can only imagine who he has taken out or 'hunted' down throughout his career. i think what it comes down to mostly, with Fett atleast, is hes just cool...simple as that for allot of people. His identity is mysterious also which can make him interesting to some people (even though we technically know who he is and what he looks like now due to the prequels, Jango Fett, clones etc etc but for many years nobody really knew as he was never unmasked)
@matthewclark79527 жыл бұрын
I still can't get past how the character of Darth Maul was blatantly killed off in ep 1. It was a very short sighted move and made it implausible for his return.

people have a short memory. The original reaction to Phantom Menace was good. It wasnt until after weeks of David Letterman and Jay Leno making fun of Jar Jar Binks that begin to alter peoples 'take' on the PM. When I left the theater on opening night there wasnt a single person who wasnt yelling and screaming and cheering... well except for me and my roommates. Nobody really noticed Jar Jar. I remember being in the apt hearing late night tv night after night making fun of Jar Jar Binks and I knew exactly what was going to happen. I saw all of this 18 years ago. I saw people acting like they hated the Phantom Menace from the beginning when they really didnt. They just gave into peer pressure. I didnt. I just made fun of people for being weak minded and allowing a stranger to tell them what is cool and what isnt. David Letterman is an idiot. He was never funny. Yet thousands of people let him dictate what President should be voted for, made fun of and harrassed. Ill never understand it.

The Truth Channel, I’m impressed, every word you just said was incorrect... I enjoyed PM a lot as a kid and wasn’t until a few years ago when I went back and watched them that I realized how clunky the dialogue was and how shit Hayden Christianson was at acting, but distinctly remember people being furious about HOW BAD it was during opening weekend... LOTS of people knew immediately what it took me years to realize

The craziest part is that Obiwan showed so much humility and restraint in his last bout with Maul. *Clone Wars Spoilers* Obiwan lost his master and love of his life at Maul's hands and yet is merciful in his last fight. That not only shows the wisdom in Obiwan, but the evolution from his youth in his first fight with Maul with aggressive fueled strikes to their last being clean and controlled.

A helmet is a great design because not seeing someones face can be really intimidating as you cant read them as well, but on the other hand, not having a helmet can be just as effective at bringing a terrifying character to life.
