I think it should be a mix or red crystals being very rear so they made synthetic ones at the height of the Sith. But after the Jedi "wiped them out" and took control of how the crystals are mined/made the Sith resorted to the bleeding process.

Mariusweeddeath Yes but the old republic war happening so jedi died all the time and after that the war between jedi and Sith continues after the rule of two. Bleeding still makes sense. Even post original trilogy a new jedi order was formed in legends and Canon. Sith have always had jedi to steal crystals from. Even after the purge only palpatine and Vader exist and palpatine already had one. So Vader just needed one jedi

The comic specifically says it has to be a jedi crystal so they can turn it. If they could just grab any crystal there wouldn’t really be a purpose for the new method besides being edgy.

The bleeding process is cooler because it reinforces how Sith need to,commit to the dark side and to control the force, but the old one had a better thematic connection with the whole "nature vs tech"theme of the series. Hard to say.

The sith had to commit plenty to the dark side because ya know "non-commital" sith were at best ignored (something that usually pisses off a sith who's not actively trying to hide), at worst promptly murdered by the nearest jedi at the first sign of justification.

personally i prefer the legends origin. it was simple, but it did its job. the new origin just seems impractical. What we need for this new origin is a source (movie, book, etc.) to set up why it is like this in a more proper way. What sith started this, why didn't they just use synthetic crystals, and in the case of special lightsaber(s) how was that handled. Darth Maul and Count Dooku have very unique lightsabers, identical twin curved hilt blades in Dooku's case. How were those cases handled, they obviously didn't just steal another jedi's lightsaber as they needed 2 crystals a piece. Tl;DR the new origin impractical and produces too many oddities, if not holes, in canon star wars lore. The Legends origin, although simple, does the job with out producing any oddities or holes.

I can see why the origin was changed. Vader just... building a new one is mundane and boring. The idea of Sith having to hunt down and pop their "Dead Jedi" cherry is much more interesting. It also means that for every armed Sith we see, that means there's definitely one less Jedi in the galaxy which calls the balance of the Force into question

Honestly it just seems like it's for the sake of edge. With the original universe sith used artificial crystals simply they because they made for more intense lightsaber beams than the usual jedi fare. Saying "oh he has to pour his hate, his ANGER into a jedi's crystal" ignores WHY would he have to take said crystal from a jedi? Both jedi and and sith sync their "force" with their crystal, this new origin is just for the sake of portraying the antagonists pissing on graves really >_>.

The idea is cooler sure but the practicality of doing this is not. Does that mean every time I break a lightsaber as a Sith, I have to hunt down another Jedi, kill him and forcefully turn his crystal? It probably won't happen often but I don't doubt its happens. I also have to get pretty lucky and find a Jedi who isn't attached by the hip to his partner and then proceed to kill him without a lightsaber. Kill the guy with a glowing energy sword that slices through metal like a hot knife through butter with my bare hands and the force (which he can use just as well). See the problem.

Sith walk around with their Masters so the numbers are even. Plus, Star Wars is all about balance with the Force so I imagine the number of Sith and Jedi (and consequently the amount of Light and Dark side) balances out despite this system. For example, one way might be that very few Jedi a) fall to the Dark Side in the first place, b) succeed in killing a Jedi or c) fully go through with corrupting the crystal (Vader was pushed back)

Except three words; Rule of Two. I don't know if they still keep this rule in the new EU but the rule is essentially; there is only ever One Master and One Student. Never shall there be more than that. When the Student Surpasses the Master, he will take the Masters place and continue the Line. We can assume that they are still holding it to some degree in the comics because we still only every see Darth and Palp but I don't know if they kept it. Also, there was no 'balance' between the literal forces (as in ground troops) the Light and the DarkSide in this era of Star Wars. Its the reason why the Jedi are so skeptical of the Sith's return in the prequels, because they were (as they believed) wiped out.

Personally, I really like the new kyber crystal lore. It makes a lot more sense to me that the colour is caused by the user than their "role" in the Jedi Order or even making synthetic ones that somehow match perfectly with organic kyber crystals save for their connection to the dark side.

Beast tried to cure his mutation and it caused him to mutate more. Beast has a natural mutation and an unnatural mutation. Emma Frost has a secondary mutation, she would be the better person to use as an example for your question.

ahhhhh Benny always washes over details and I can't help but feel some crucial details were ignored. Because technically from what was said in the video, Vader just needs to "bleed" his own personal pain into the crystal. So he could technically acquire a normal crystal, make his own lightsaber, and bleed his pain into the crystal to make it red. In this way the lightsaber isn't "given" but it is not "taken" either. And the whole pain and bleeding theme is still there. I'm guessing that crystals for lightsabers are rare and with the destruction of the jedi order, crystal became hard to find as well. So it was easier to find and kill a remaining Jedi than it was to go excavating for a crystal.

Dooku had his own lightsaber and probably he collected some of them which he later gave to Ventress and Savage. Ben Solo killed like half of his fellow students, but as for Maul and Sidious - well we should assume that they had ,,pure" or ,,used" kyber crystals from the black market. Rebels Maul - he probably killed an inquisitor and inquisitors were former padawans and low level jedi knights.

It would probably be seen as either cheating, or weak for the sith to just buy a kyber crystal. I doubt sidious would do that. It wouldn't be hard, find some jedi in the outrim and frame some pirates. There are more jedi than sith after all

Maul's first Jedi kill happened when he already had his saberstaff. Since he was such a hateful, aggressive beast we can assume Palp didn't wanted him to run around killing Jedi. Or maybe Palpatine killed few Jedi's in his youth, or maybe even Plagueis had a collection.

I do like the concept of the crystals being alive, and Sith just essentially make them bleed for their red lightsaber. But them going out killing Jedi, stealing their sabers; contradicts the whole "We must stay hidden" thing. And I also, just really like Legends: "Just use synthetic crystals, christ! Stop being so dramatic Jedis . . ." take on the thing.
