Course Description: This course will examine the historical philosophy of the towering Black scholar and great freedom fighter of the 20th Century. We shall engage in close readings of Du Bois’ classic work, “The Souls of Black Folk” (1903) as well as subsequent essays in his magisterial corpus, especially his classic autobiography, “Dusk of Dawn” (1940)

My one critiqued of this lecture is that Brother West should have spent 5 minutes on who Phyllis Wheatley was. Phyllis Wheatley was a slave that the Wheatley family of Massachusetts taught to read. Her name Phyllis came from the slave ship that brought her to Mass. and they gave her the family name. She wrote INCREDIBLE poetry that was greatly appreciated by the uppercrust of the time, since the Wheatley's used to bring her out before houseguests to recite her works. But she wrote works that were respected and appreciated by George Washington and his wife. When the Wheatleys set her free, they sent her off without a penny to try and find her way in the world, but the rich folks of the period wouldn't pay for her works. She died penniless and hungry with her toddler child starved to death in her arms. America is what it is.

Greetings Mr. Cornell University, I am obliged to have experienced a dozen or so of your public speakings. To my surprise, I am now studying to achieve my first tier degree of Psychology. I find that the likes of your teachings are educational, but also rather prophetic in every sense. I am motivated to illustrate the implementation of change to society. I'm have not read a lot of the literature Dr. West is mentioning, but I believe I vaguely understand why he uses these examples. Is W.E.B Du Boise actually referencing this literature, or is this just the way Dr. West teaches?
