Since we were in The Temptones, in 1965, and before, Daryl has had the ability to know exactly where his voice was in the universe and on the scale. He has PERFECT PITCH . That means , he can identify a note without hearing the note on an instrument. If he wants to sing in the key of Bb he can do it without accompaniment. He can simply find the key or note by singing it. I have heard him do this daily when we sang acapella Doo Wop. Most groups could not find the starting note without a prompt from an instrument. WE messed with him and while at the piano, asked him to sing a certain note . He would sing it and then one of us would play that note on the keyboard. He was never wrong. He was the instrument in our group. Remember, he plays multiple instruments too. He has been and always will be , technically one of the best vocalists to ever sing.Total vocal control. Breathing , phrasing and time and the ability to do what many other singers find very difficult. That being said, this track was done , with the music and with the beat , on a multi track recording. Each voice, each instrument , on a separate track in the studio. So what you are hearing is the absence and the removal of the other tracks and just his voice, on his track. That separation is done so if there is a wrong phrase or note, it can be retracked at the exact place it occurs. Obviously his pitch and control are spot on , but he isn't singing without hearing the music, although, he could if he wanted to. There is a track on You Tube of The Temptations singing MY GIRL with out the music too. It's done the same way. You can hear all the real nuances in the song that you can't hear when the music is played with the vocals. That's how recordings become perfect in a studio. Mistakes are isolated and re -recorded. It's just the way it works. Now they can also use a pitch corrector but that will never happen on a Hall and Oates or a Daryl Hall track. Because he's the real deal .So many today are NOT!

You will only hear releases of his vocals isolates like this of songs that were cut with drum machines or when the drummers were listening to click tracks because kids today have no patience to fix timing problems. They want to be able to take a vocal track that is in perfect synch with computer generated tempos. That way they can drop the vocal track into their Digital Audio Workstation and puts loops under it and voila - instant ear gasms. Daryl’s voice is audio-“genic” to the 10th degree; a stellar sound that defines a large part of what the 80s sound was all about.
