Weimar Republic party SPD took this Haydn melodie 1922 without the permission of Habsburg. Germany is not sovereign since 1918, Emperor Wilhem II would have never taken the melody of his neighbors as Anthem, no respect - it is an Austrian melody. The Austrian Erzherzog Kaiser Franz is the owner of this melodie, it was his birthday present 1797 from Haydn, the melody is based on an old croatia song.

They never played the entire German song in the 1940s. only the nationalist first verse and the Nazi anthem “Horst-Wessel-Lied”. So, as a German, I am anything but proud of this performance from the Wehrmacht in the 1940s.
