This video demonstrates sewing a book using two-on and three-on sewing on tapes. Two-on sewing, or the full name most commonly given to it being "two sheets on" sewing, is sewing two sections on at a time. This technique can be used on cords as well as tapes. The early use of this technique was most likely for speeding up sewing. However, for craft binders it is mostly used to reduce the swell in thick books with many sections.

Thank you for posting this! It's going to be a lifesaver; my first bookbinding project was a 500-page novel and the swell on the spine was something awful; the third book is over 700 pages so I was getting a bit desperate for a solution that wasn't 'try thinner thread'!

Hello. Very Useful video. I would like your suggestion. I have an old dictionary for re-binding with 85 signatures (16-pages/sign. 1360 pages). What would be better for so as to maintain a balance between no big swell and durability in binding ? with two-on or three-on sewing or mixing between one-on,two-on and three on ? Thank you

Yes, this is a case where fine, but strong thread, and two-on (maybe three-on) sewing is called for. I would use 4 supports (cords of tape) and three-on. Do the first and last 3 sections all-along (normal sewing) and then swap to three-on. You have to do the maths or work out near the end. You may have to do more than 3 sections at the end, which is fine. Have fun! DAS

@@DASBookbinding Would I also like to ask you, use the existing sewing holes or create new ones? If I use the same existing holes to avoid guarding (for no-large swell) I will necessarily use 3 cords by default. Finally, since we are discussing it, I would like to suggest you to make a video with the steps of re-binding old book from the beginning. Thank you

@@vaidoo Yep, existing holes is always best. Don't tell anyone, but I'm planning a special project for when I reach 100 videos and I think it will involve rebinding a book. All the best, DAS

If the holes can be sawn, what is the reason for using an awl to punch each hole?
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 3 жыл бұрын
I only saw if it is required, such as sunken cords or for making the kettle stitches lay flat. It is better to not remove material if can be avoided. An awl just pushes fibres aside. You can then close the holes back up with the pointed end of a bone folder. DAS

@@DASBookbinding Got it! Thanks! I've got all of my tools and supplies now, except that I'm still waiting for the finishing press and sewing frame to arrive, and I'm working on my first book. I've chosen to do a sewn board binding as my first book.

Seems like this wouldn't result in a very sturdy book. Do you use additional glue on this type of binding? Glad to hear your family bird book is still in use!
