Based on a video that came with a replacement odometer gear, we only undid half of the dash pad of our '93 850 to pull the instrument cluster. It DID NOT come out very easily, and after watching several of your videos we realize how lucky we were to not have broken the thing in two! So, we took your advice and used this video to pull the entire dash pad. All of your instructions were great, and it all went very well. Thanks so much for all of your helpful videos. Your channel will be our primary source from now on for all of our dyi efforts on our beloved 850. Thanks again!!

Absolutely. If you try to pry up 1/2 of it, it will likely break in several pieces like the one I took off here. The plastic is old and brittle.

I've been fixing my 93 850 for over ten years and removing the dash pad was my worst of many repair experiences. Avoid it at all costs! The plastic is super brittle and cracks almost as easily as a potato chip. No glue will permanently adhere to the black slippery brittle plastic. The only way to glue it is to use a hot soldering iron to mush aluminum mesh window screening into half of the surface area and then apply a glue that will grab on to the screen that is not melted into the plastic. It's a long and tedious ordeal and it's impossible to even know if you are shaping the plastic as it originally was curved especially if it was split across near the airbag as in this video. Leaving it in two pieces is my suggestion.

Robert DIY Robert, Just wanted to give you an update on what the REAL culprit was with the rattling. Yesterday, I was driving at highway speeds and the rattling comes back louder than ever. I noted, however that the winds were also VERY strong. I turned off all accessories to try and listen. I got behind a truck, and the rattle disappeared just like that. I moved away from the truck to engage the rattle again. Sure enough, it started back up. By chance, I put my hand up on the plate that houses the reading lights in the front (right near the sunroof), and I feel this ungodly knocking on my hand. Initial impressions were, "Oh no, something's going to fly off my roof," but no. It turns out that the rubber seal in between the windshield and the roof had come lose and was gradually getting worked out from the center of the car out to the ends by headwind. The massive rattling was actually the rubber seal flapping against the roof at extremely high velocity, causing the sound to vibrate down the A-pillars and giving the impression that it was coming from the dashboard. Not the easiest thing to get back in its track, but I worked it back in and the problem is nonexistent. Thanks for all your feedback!

kraftyw1999 Wow, that must have been a mess. I have seen those come loose, mine is loose now but not making any noise.

Robert DIY I noticed it coming loose in its "preliminary phase." It held out longer than it really should have, but when it went, it was loud. Anyway, like I said, I worked it back in... at least temporarily. May have to glue it in if it comes out again, but at least I know the noise was coming from that and not a strut or the blower fan!

Hello I have a 1997 Volvo 850 turbo wagon. When I bought the vehicle the person whom I purchased it from let me know that the heater core was missing. When I bought this vehicle it was on the summer time. I notice that the cool air was not sufficient enough to cool down my vehicle. Or better yet said that air itself was not sufficient, because it was putting out cold air but not enough air was going around the vehicle. Also the air duct underneath the driver seat and passenger seat did not have any flow of air coming out. What could be causing that no air comes out if the passenger air ducts, and why is the air not keeping and or maintaining a constant cool temperature inside of my vehicle? I hope you can point me on the right direction man so far all your videos have answered most of my questions very helpful indeed.

Hi Robert, Do I need to remove dash to get to the Recirculation damper motor assembly including flap. Some say you just remove glove box and knee bumper panel and just take out 3 screw that mount motor. A fly would have a hard time getting in there to turn the rear screws. My issue is that when I want to close the flap, I get a clicking and thumping sound as it closes. To open, no issues. I see that the arm is connected, motor runs fine but there is the struggle to close. A gear may have broken somewhere, but upon inspection I could not see much. How do you get in there to fix? My dash has never been apart. As I was taking apart the glove box I could see how the plastic washers behind the glove box just crumbled in my hand. If I remember correctly, Volvo made many plastic components environmentally safe... meaning over time it will decompose. So the engine will go 500,000 miles without the dashboard :-))
@RobertDIY9 жыл бұрын
PAUL MACZ Paul, you sound like you understand your situation. Good plastic, I do mean plastic glue will be your friend. I purchased a small $12 Husky driver set that has small T-bits, Flat-bits, and Cross tip-bits. It also included a 6" flex extension that I used to get that rear screw out. Once out, I opened one of those motors and found a gear with a tooth missing. Hope that helps. Oh, you don't have to remove the entire dash, just access it as you described.

Apparently Volvo didn't change much with their interior plastics from the 200/700 series cars that I'm used to tinkering on. I think that was the worst thing about the 760 I used to own - the stupid dash plastics. Even if you're very careful with them, sometimes you just get one that explodes into a bunch of pieces. :( I wonder if there's some way to reinforce a good one from the junkyard to give the pad more strength but still have it fit properly.

The only way to glue it is to use a hot soldering iron to mush aluminum mesh window screening into half of the surface area and then apply a glue that will grab on to the screen that is not melted into the plastic." Use aluminum screen because nylon melts. I would suggest that the adhesive glue should be flexible, not the drill-able kind. Might smell for awhile especially when dash gets hot.

Hi Robert, Was driving along the other day when I heard what sounded like something shearing off of my 850. Then, I heard rattles from somewhere inside the dash. Air still worked fine, in fact I replaced the fan with an aftermarket one about a year ago, but it becomes audible when the fan is operating. Planning to take my dashboard out to replace my odometer gear, but before I do, any ideas as to where I should look for the rattling culprit? It sounds like a piece of plastic broke off and is in there, or maybe the new fan became loose and is hitting its chamber at an angle? It seems to become audible between 30-45 MPH, especially with the fan speed at about medium. I noticed how the plastics get very brittle on these cars so perhaps it could be that? Thanks for any help!

Robert, I have a 1996 Volvo 850 and I was wondering if there is a trick to removing the arms from the glovebox compartment. I think i need to pull the glovebox out because I have a weird noise coming from behind it that i think is related to the recirculation button. I can hear it whenever the key is turned on whether the engine is running or not and it is louder when I turn the recirculation button on. From what I've read it sounds like it is most likely something to do with a vent getting in a bind or falling off and it keeps trying to move it but can't. Any advice is much appreciated.
