Our 2009 RX had a dash cracking all over the place. We checked around and prices ranged from $1900 to $3500. We found the part for $622 at a dealer here in Phoenix. My wife and I decided to try it because of AMD's video. It went fantastic. It is not that hard if you are an automotive person. It took us three, 4 hour days. It's a big advantage to have a helper. We could do one now in one day. Our car has 70K miles and was really worth fixing. A tribute to Lexus is how perfect the new dash fits. We have lots of pictures. Thanks AMD

I have a 2004 Rx330 with only 87000 miles and , other than the cracked dash, its in beautiful shape. When this CCN video popped up i thought "im gonna do that myself" then saw that the removal footage was lost ...ugh. I'm still considering it but I like to do this stuff step my step for big removals like this. Did you have to use other removal videos to help you with the different steps?

Agreed an amateur or shady mechanic will mess up the clips and hide the imperfections below the dash. You won't know unless a significant rattle.

I can never keep track of everything in a big job like this so I put the nuts/bolts/screws for each piece in a zip lock sandwich bag and label it with a sharpie so I know how it goes back together. I also label the order that it came apart too. The people that can do it by memory always amaze me.

I bought a dash cover for my 2007 ES350 for $40. Mechanically it’s in fantastic shape- I just didn’t feel it was worth spending $1500+ to replace a dash just because of stickiness/glare. 256k miles and still runs like a champ!

I put a dash cover for about $200 that goes right over the cracked one on my 2007 Rx350. Exact color... Obviously not as good as a full replacement, but pretty darn good. For a 15 year old vehicle in good shape it will suffice...

Hi Ahmed hope you are doing good. I was thinking of a matt finish wrap can resolve the glare issue. The factory videos show that dash is hoisted on an arm and then 2 technicians do the install. You did it all alone 👍👍

I sold my RX330 last month, my dash was even more cracked. I did not change it out bcuz I didn’t want squeaks or leaks. To see what this entails 😳😳😳. I had a 2006 Sienna that was part of this campaign. I had two small cracks in the dash and knew it would probably get worse but decided not to have the dash replaced. I just didn't trust my dealer to do this repair properly. I traded it in last year and the two cracks did get a bit larger. I just didn't want to open a can of worms.

it all depend on the tech who work on the vehicle. you are lucky if your vehicle get into this kind of technician. some are not to that good, you may get back two or three trips. But let them do it. Other tech would help, or would fix the problem. interior work is ok. Only engine work get more dirty, and tired. Tech may get issue

Got the dash replaced free under Lexus recall on my 2004 RX330 several years ago. Dealer did a great job but they handed me an estimate of “ needed repairs “ that totaled over $6,000 !! One of they things they wanted to do was to replace the radiator ( there was nothing wrong with it ) I have an independent mechanic that services my RX. He looked it over & said everything was fine. Here I am several years later & my RX is still running perfectly ( without $6,000 in unnecessary repairs ) Take the service department’s recommendations with a grain of salt. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

Man, you are very good at your job!! Really good demonstration of how to do it right the first time! I would be very, VERY scared of having anyone, including a dealership replace an entire dash. Not with you, though! I can see your frustration working at a dealership with an un-cooperative Service Manager pushing you to "just get it done". I have seen mechanics, on my daughter's or wife's cars (I try to work on my own cars since they are super clean) not even replace body plugs, clips etc. and route hoses in the engine compartment incorrectly, just simple stuff like that. One time, the heater hose was crimped (so no heat, of course) and I got the service manager involved and the technician started making all kinds of crazy excuses. Being a Toyota dealership, it got resolved pronto!

When I moved to Florida I saw a bunch of these cracked dashes at dealerships. I wasn’t going to watch but glad I did. Cool to see it with the dash off. AMD....I love it...again. These are the things I truly love to do... it's meant for the truly OCD. One thing, and I don't want to be a nag, but my back hurts just watching you. Your work trolley seems to be a better height than the box, but it appears that even your work trolley is about 8 to 10 inches short--was looking at the angle when you had your drill on the old dash. I think adding larger wheels may help prevent back soreness. We want to see you for years to come! Many, many years to come! Take care and be safe.

My friend's wife totaled her 2006 RX, I pulled their dash (they had it replaced during the warranty) and replaced my shiny cracked dash in my 2008 RX350. It was much easier with a helper, and just take your time and be patient. When I put everything back together the airbag light was on, I ended up pulling the glove box and one of the airbag connectors wasn't pushed in all the way. Otherwise, ~8 hours total not including pulling the dash out of the donor car. Thank you for this video AMD!

Had to replace the dash on my 2007 Camry about 2 years ago. Toyota Corp, surprisingly, argued with me that I would have to pay for it since the campaign was over. I argued that I was never notified of the dash issue and that it was a serious safety hazard because of the reflection in the windshield. After some back and forth, they agreed to pay for the dash, and I paid labor. Although I was disappointed they argued with me, in the end, they did the right thing. This is why I keep buying Toyotas. Ahmad, I think you might have done the labor on that dash replacement - no rattles! 😊

Really good video. You did a really good job. Usually mechanics in dealer doesn't take (Or have ?) time to put things back the way you did. I think it's why most people are reluctant to have the dash completely torn appart. I have mine messed with with a brand new highlander 2020 hybrid and after getting the car back from dealer, it rattle, squeak and vent dash even fall on the floor. I take it back twice to the dealer to have it fixed and they never manage too. The job was done at a big Toyota dealer, and I have to say that i was pretty disappointed.

I did this once, 30 years ago, to a mid 80's Ford, that I made the mistake to buy, that developed a leaking heater core, after a few years. I managed to get it all apart, and together again, but somehow had over 10 to 15 screws left over. I had no problems with the car, after that, but it always rattled like crazy until I dumped it a few years later. I got rid of half the rattles by shoving foam rubber into areas that made noise.......I have a good track record in repairing things that I'm not qualified to do.

Great video. This reminds me of when I went to dealer to see if power windows could be installed. Dealer said wiring harness, dash and bumper would need to be removed because window power went through bcm. I didn't accept that so I created my own wiring harness with its own circuit. Installed new window motors, regulators and switches myself. Looks like factory. Cruise control add on much easier, already prewired. Wished they would design heater cores so as to not have to remove so much. Purchased factory wiring diagram technician book for my vehicle.

There is no way in hell I'd ever buy an expensive luxury grade car and tarnish the interior looks with a shitty dash cover that does little good and just attracts dust and crap under it. Plus I've seen some that give the impression they would get in the way of an air bag's deployment. As someone that has to all these filthy cars that come in to our smash repair, I hate the extra work that dash covers add.

What a video! I can only echo my admiration as others have done here. You are truly one in a million but trying to have a logical mind I would like to ask a question. Dashes are exposed to harsh sunlight, hot and cold cycles, and eventually suffer cracks, discoloration, etc. etc. Why don't engineers just design a dash where only the exposed portion can be removed and snapped or bolted into place without having to disassemble and remove the entire dash assembly. I am not an automotive engineer and may be way off base. Just curious. thanks

Very interesting AMD. I very much appreciate your expertise. Buying vehicles over the years I have always depended on the repair shop of the dealerships. Basically no one touches my Toyota but Toyota technicians. There's a trust level there on my end. Do you feel that most Toyota techs treat their customers like you display in your videos these days?

Awesome job! I've just bought a 2010 Corolla. The upper part of the dash, near to the windshield, makes a "crackling" or "sizzling" noise after a few minutes of driving at high speed on the highway. Any clue about what that could be? Thanks

Hi! Usually the bezel near the windshield. Remove it and verify that the noise goes away if it does then use some foam insulation to quiet it down

Weld a frame that’s rotten is where I draw the line. Otherwise if it has a Toyota Lexus or scion logo on the front I’ll do the job.

Question: any possibility you have a video on how to pull off the lower left hand portion of the dash area, to the left of the steering column, in order to access the rear hatch power door switch that is not working on my 2005 RX330?

Your videos are great. Thanks for doing an excellent job. I have a question as there is no clear answer on the internet about it. How do you check the transmission fluid level on a 2013 Highlander, FWD, 3.5L engine. Do you check with engine running? if yes, why two marks on the dipstick for cold & hot? I checked the level on a cold engine with engine stopped and the level on the dipstick was way over the Hot mark. Its a factory filled transmission so unlikely that they overfilled, what gives?
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! You want to check the transmission fluid with the engine running. Drive the car for 15-20 min then check it. It should be not higher than the max hot. And not into the cold zone.

Do you have a video on how to keep you factory warranty while working on your own car? Like what you need to have incase something happens
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! If work is done right and using good parts you won’t have issues with warranty. Document your work that you do and keep recipes just in case.

Amazing video Amd. I think it's time you have a 2 camera set up one overhead would have been great for this video. How many hours would a dealership allow for this kind of job and at what cost?
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Working on that setup. Ordering new cameras soon. This job pays around 6-7 hours and at a dealership environment you’d be lucky to get allotted half that time and the interruptions are endless at a dealership environment
