Not everything is simple to replace and the dash is definitely one of those items. Let the CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ explain why they are so expensive on this 2009 Nissan 370Z. Plus we get to see a really nice Z up-close and in great shape.
BTW... Congratulations on graduating from Veterinary School, Leilah. ❤️Leo

On many nissans its not terrible to do, just uncomfortable due to often lying to back to get better access. Many of them are center of dash under radio area, so you usually remove one of the center console side panels and then you have access. Some of the jeeps like cherokees and gms in general are more involved, multiple screws sometimes panels.

I have a Porsche 924 that I've owned for over 30 yrs. Many years ago the dash top started to split around the air vents and started to look ugly but a local Porsche specialist had solved the problem for this and the 944 that shared the same dash. They moulded a replacement in the required colour that included the grain effect of leather and it fitted perfectly to the top and front following any seems on the dash. To secure all that was required was the use of silicone as an adhesive and a few strategically placed wedges to hold it secure while the adhesive set. A simple effective solution to what could have been a very expensive replacement. Unless you were told you would never notice it.

Those dash's between 07-09 on most Nissans are known to have this problem and have had recalls done on them in the past. This dash issue also affected Mazda's and Lexus's since theirs were also made by the same manufacturer. Most cars with this problem only still exist because the previous owner was too lazy to take their car to the dealer and get it fix when the recall was still valid, now who ever owns the car now gets to deal with melting dash or pay $3k to fix it, how fun.

Part of the reason I left the automotive industry is I got tired of hearing these two lines ...."get it in and get it out" or " We don't have time for that just get it done and if its not right they will come back"....those lines made me hate the industry. I was a guy that was particular and wanted to make sure it was done right before I gave it back to the customer but nope that was a no no and cost time and money which brought down shop productivity. It more important to say it was done and get it out the door to keep the cost down for both the shop and the customer.

It amazes me that in the 2000's, there are issues like this. My wife has an early Lexus IS250 with the melting dash. Hers isn't bad, just some small, BB size bits missing. But some IS250's/350's are liquefying! It makes no sense how cars from the 70's, 80's, 90's all the way up to now don't have these issues. But here is Nissan and Toyota in the early 00's having melting dashboards. Side note. Toyota sent out a very limited recall for the Lexus/Toyota dashboard issues. By the time we took ownership of this IS250, the previous owner hadn't taken advantage of the recall. It covered a new dash, and door cards. And he would have been given a Lexus loaner car. But we just missed that recall window, and they offered us 5% off a new dash replacement! Talk about insult. Still can't believe melting dashboards in the 2000's was a thing.

REALLY, the only dash I have not used Armor-All on was my '85 Porsche 928S2, which had a leather dashboard. But the pod DID get Armor-All. -The thing about this stuff is that if you use it once, you have to continue to apply it now and then. It has a good sunscreen and moisturizes the plastic, but it also contains alcohol and can dry the plastic excessively if it is not occasionally applied. I'm not a 370Z fan, but I applaud the people who own this car wanting to keep it nice by replacing that gooey [What? Seriously?] dashboard. That would drive me up the wall too! Great video!

Armor-All does has a leather based treatment formula in a gold spray bottle, I have it and its pretty good.
@Flies2FLL
@Flies2FLL 2 жыл бұрын
@@lupavo1738 Yes I have tried that as well, it does a good job. Leather: I've heard two things regarding leather seat/surface care: 1. The owner of Oxford leather in Osan, South Korea told me to use unscented Ponds Cold Cream on my leather flying jacket. Apparently this does the best job of keeping the leather moist. I didn't feel like it was wise to use this on car seating surfaces, but the Armor All product you've mentioned works the same way and probably just as well. 2. Leather in cars is PAINTED. They don't make cows in red, or blue, or "Luxor Beige" or many other colors. The leather is essentially painted, and its surface should be waxed just like the car's paint. Collinite makes a leather wax that I have been using on my Cayman S and it seems to be keeping the leather supple and clean. And it is easy to climb in and out of the car, since my butt slides across the seat very easily, as opposed to the moisturizers which have the opposite effect. So, I'm not sure which way is better.....

That's a cool looking car. I'm not a mechanic, but I've done a lot of amateur wrenching on my own vehicles over the decades. Someone stole my radio and busted out part of the dash on my '82 Pontiac Grand Prix. I upgraded the radio and decided to upgrade the front speakers, so the dash had to come out. I got it out and back in just fine, but it was a pain. I'd never do that again!

My uncle always said he much preferred working on Korean cars from the 2000s than Japanese ones for this exact reason. The former can have parts swapped out like Legos with little molestation of surrounding parts; you can't even remove a headlamp assembly from a Mitsubishi mirage without dropping its entire front bumper. Said their reliability was pretty comparable before the direct-injection era too, korean cars didn't drive as nice though.

The sticky dash issue is such a shame, I guess in the future the owner would put one of those silver covers on the windscreen in hot or sunny conditions? One thing though, unlike many of the Euro crap that requires a tonne of work and money and aren't worth fixing, a car like this is DEFINITELY worth spending the money on. These are vastly underrated cars by the motoring press who are obsessed with 4 cyl turbo engines, DCT's and digital instrument clusters, this is simple no nonsense motoring that provides a huge amount amount of pleasure. I needed 4 seats otherwise I would have got one. I actually call my IS 350 'the 4 door Z' which I believe is very similar to the Z but with 4 doors.

I guess being involved with various types of repair service much of my adult life, plus being that kid that would take stuff apart to try to figure out how it worked and put it back together again (most of the stuff actually worked after I was done with it), this kind of thing doesn't bother me. Sure, if I had my car in for replacing the struts & shocks and found it half disassembled I might question it, but as long as they get it all back together and don't overcharge me, I'm ok with it.

My big truck mechanic took 4 months to put a turbo and some shocks on my volvo truck along with a few other odds and ends. I had to source most of the parts myself, which is fine but they never once called and said we're at a roadblock because we can't find parts. I think it'd still be there if i hadn't started calling everyday saying i needed yesterday.

Cars from around this time have dash problems and guess why: emissions. The off gassing caused by the interior materials actually count toward the emissions rating. Manufacturers were still experimenting with materials and couldn't get it quite right. My 08 lexus dash did the same thing so I just threw a carpet cover over it
