It appears to me that the axle or the wheel was at fault on that tanker, notice how none of the other cars derailed on that spot, so I do not believe that the track was at fault, in this world nowadays maintenance is suffering drastically, the people upstairs are trying to save money anyway they can, reaching for longer oil life so they don't have to change it and the same thing with Grease, I had a boss in Dallas Texas Tell me this was going to eventually happen in 2011, maintenance needs to be priority one and it is proven right here

@Darrell Cook They discovered defective wheel sets on a specific type of car (they're not sure it caused the derailment) in the derailment on camera. Those cars all got new wheelsets last year. After finding the same defect on other cars from that batch, NS notified the other railroads (who also had some of the affected cars). Apparently every car from that set has the defective wheelsets. So NS likely prevented multiple derailments across multiple railroads with their response to the Springfield derailment.

We've reached the breaking point of negligence and corporate refusal to update the technology. Besides the issue of labor abuse, the current system even has crucial infrastructure still based on 19th century tech, including crumbling ties, missing stakes, and shifting rails due to the freeze/thaw affects on the sparsely filled rail beds. Derailments are nothing new, there is however, more media focus on them at the moment, hence why it "seems" the number of derailments has increased.

Actually, your concern was somewhat answered years ago. They have tags on them that have batteries to power the transmitter which transmits the car data to a wayside reader . I doubt any at all, or if a few transmit via GPS. The tags can possibly detach during a derailment so, exclusively relying on GPS might be an issue. Us as the train crew are required to have more than one copy of the train report for incidents just like this to show to emergency responders. Tank cars like the one in East Palestine were double hulled which slowed a progression of the initial fire according to the NTSB.

It's unusual for this to happen in one area this close together but it is not unusual on a nationwide scale. It should be but it's not. Republicans want to deregulate industries such as "rail transport" and let them "self regulate". Understand that regulations are only brought about after something happens. They are put there to improve or make a standard so that there isn't a future accident. Industry can never regulate itself. Why? Because industry is more worried about profit than safety and will only ever do what it has to do because any investment is a loss of profit. So why are Republicans pushing for deregulation? Because of lobbyists from industry donating to politicians or a party. Is cheaper for the railroad to make millions in donations than to spend billions on improvements. We are talking about an industry that has made seven hundred billion dollars in profits last year. Those millions spent a lot of money are a drop in the bucket and an acceptable loss for the cost of doing business. So why don't you hear more about these trail derailments Nationwide that go into the hundreds every year? Because the railroad is one of the largest shareholders in every single news organization...CNN, FOX, MSNBC... You can understand that they only care about themselves and profit. Let's do another exercise...in polotics. Voters/supporters/donations...lets get rid of the ethics committees (let the poloticians self regulate). Lets demonize law enforcement and the justice system (get rid of EPA regulations and downsize the agency). Lets control what people see, how they see it and where they see it (Propaganda, fox news). Lets control what they know (education, Florida and removal of facts from history). Lets make sure no one is held accountable (politicians who are in violation of the law, obstruct, lie, subvert, sedition, insurrection, campaign violations, embezzlement, false representation, false identity, suppression of constitutional rights). Then the icing on the cake remove any threat by the court by getting them in their pocket (aka: bribing, aka "donations". Why exactly does an appointed Justice to the supreme Court accept donations when they have a lifetime appointment and it's not an elected position? Its a bribe and little-known fact is that you cannot bring any charges against any Justice for any reason, that sits on the supreme court.). So there ya go. The GOP panties are showing because these train derailments are structured the same as..., regulated, enforced, maintained, and rigged the same as the GOP so there is no accountability, the peasants pay for it and they are making that money...by any means necessary. Swampier now than it ever was before. Remember that when you decide to vote for the GOP.

The Rail Beds more than likely haven’t had a more thorough Inspection, it may be time to update the Rail Ties, by replacing the old wooden ties with Concrete Ties and re-level the Ballast Stones/Gravel Beds. I’ve seen too many Railcars Swaying through Rail Crossings.

200 cars at approx 60 ft length each is a 12'000 ft long train-more than 2.27 miles (>3'650 m). Let that sink in. Imagine being a train conductor or engineer and having to walk the entire train length (twice)-from head-end to tail and tail to head-end-to inspect the train for faulty equipment. And now the railways want to go to single person crews. Absurd. Single person crews have worked well in Europe (for the most part) because European railways-notwithstanding the infrastructure being predominantly state-owned throughout the EU and well maintained-have mandatory positive train control systems (a train that runs a danger (red) signal, is forced to stop automatically by train traffic control (TTC)) and they're limited in length to about 750 m (2'460 ft or less than 1/2 a mile … ~50 cars). Signal blocks are also shorter (typically

one day someone will get smart enough to augment the 1800's style transportation system to use hot mix asphalt in a valley v-shaped pattern to keep such derailments at the top of a crest of loose gravel, cracked concrete, or rotted timber from being a likely culprit. It's simple physics y'all.

Another example of how American railroads prioritise profit over safety by cutting maintenance to an absolute minimum. Funny how overseas railroads can manage zero at-fault derailments in a year.

Large corporations do cost analysis studies to determine if it's cheaper to pay wrongful death, injury, and damage lawsuits or to correct the problem. For instance, Ford and GM are notorious for doing cost analysis on the Ford Pinto gas tank and GM steering column failures.
