Listening to that retired engineer speak really hit home. As a former locomotive engineer myself, I remember always putting safety first above everything. It was expected of us. I remember the mantra, "When in doubt, take the safetst route." The railroad is very unforgiving; employees die every year. As much as the company drilled safety practices into our heads, it is hard for me to fathom how much that industry has changed in such a short period of time. Inhalation is the primary route of exposure, and vinyl chloride is readily absorbed from the lungs. Its odor threshold is too high to provide an adequate warning of hazardous concentrations. The odor of vinyl chloride becomes detectable at around 3,000 ppm and the OSHA PEL is 1 ppm (8-hour TWA). Therefore, workers can be overexposed to vinyl chloride without being aware of its presence. A 5-minute exposure to airborne concentrations of 8,000 ppm can cause dizziness. As airborne levels increase to 20,000 ppm, effects can include drowsiness, loss of coordination, visual and auditory abnormalities, disorientation, nausea, headache, and burning or tingling of the extremities. Exposure to higher concentrations of vinyl chloride for longer durations can cause death, presumably due to central nervous system (CNS) and respiratory depression. The gas is heavier than air and can cause asphyxiation in poorly ventilated or enclosed spaces. Children exposed to the same levels of vinyl chloride as adults may receive a larger dose because they have greater lung surface area:body weight ratios and increased minute volumes:weight ratios. In addition, they may be exposed to higher levels than adults in the same location because of their short stature and the higher levels of vinyl chloride found nearer to the ground

Same thing with the derailment in a small town named Graniteville, South Carolina. That basically made a carrier container explode and release extremely concentrated chlorine into a small town killing a bunch of people who basically were bombed with mustard gas from a train carrier container that was pressurized, erupting. At the time, I was a college student at Benedict college in Columbia SC (I’m from Jersey, literally right outside of Manhattan- I moved back here after graduating college) I remember with my fellow chemistry majors going out to the more rural areas where lower income white & black people lived, who complained of so many horrific things for years after the incident; allowing us to test their properties, forage, water wells, clothing, even livestock and pets. We were threatened by the state with defunding our small college as well as federal grants drying up if we made our research public. Professors lost their tenure over it, and deans and department chairs were demoted or outright fired. We had to sit on our research for almost 2 decades! Apparently the EPA of President Bush and Obama didn’t know it existed, the Trump admin was a joke in regards to anything EPA. Bidens EPA has at least attempted to reach out to our former professors and department chairs (this of whom that are still alive anyways) one lost all of our research in a bad flood in Columbia SC in 2015-2016 and the other has relocated to Arizona to teach and has lost all of the work on a hard drive that was left in a storage unit in Arizona that reached internal temps of over 200°F and below freezing temps in the winter over a couple years which destroyed the hard drives from the heat/cold/heat/cold dynamic. Me and my classmates all still possessed our individual research and were missing about 10% of it all from a classmate who unfortunately passed away tragically from a heart attack at the age of 32. We are compiling our work now and as of this week were fortunate enough to find the records keeper of the now defunct lab who did our testing who had everything we needed. Within the next month or two we are all planning on going back out there to retest to compare todays work with our work from 2005. Also, the state of SC completely tried to sweep it under the rug. When it was a republican president in a majority republican ran state legislature with a republican governor and republican Supreme Court; partisan bullshit superseded our wellbeing as citizens in this country. Not to even make it a partisan or political thing; but the stark difference in the outcry and blaming of the transportation secretary of all people for a accident is mind boggling!!! What republican partisan hacks and the peanut gallery refuse to acknowledge is this outcry and blaming is politics 101 ! They don’t give a DAMN about these people or anything else! It’s just politics to them! PERIOD! Wether they’re democrats or republicans it’s politics period. The sad thing is these politicians KNOW exactly what the process is (a lengthy one at that) to even come to a conclusion of what happened and what didn’t happen. It’s a years long process and they KNOW this! Those rail companies are heavily subsidized by government and even if they’re sued it’s only so much responsibility they will be responsible for.

For those of you younger Americans who are angry and frustrtaed with your government, angry at corporations, let me ask all of you something, what does it take for all of you to understand this is capitalism in its un-adultered form. The citizens, meaning all of you are nothing more than cattle to be traded on the stock market. Incidents like this, Camden, Detroit, lower 9th ward of New Orleans, Pine Ridge, Los Alamos, and Flint, this is the same situation over and over and over again. It's profit over human life and our government is completely subservent to rich oligarch billionaires. The two party system has convinced all of you to blame each other while at the same time become passive in your outrage, just as long as you keep buying their products and watching their banal television programming. This will continue to happen everyday because the entire country is too apathetic, too ignorant, and too consumed with their own busy lives to take collective action. You just need to look in the mirror if you want to blame someone though. That's the sad reality.

I had an argument with this person who said I’m a crazy conspiracy theorist only because I said the government can’t be trusted anymore. As someone who grew up in a corrupt country I know very well what this is and how they can manipulate citizens to believe anything they tell them. I moved to this country about 15 years ago, and in all honesty it seems to be getting worst and worst. Even Mexico my home land who I still visit often is getting better and better and projected to becoming a world economy in the incoming years. Americans are moving to mexico like never before. In fact, the president of Mexico responded to accusations by American officials by saying “in Mexico we have real democracy” and this is true at least for the past 5 years. Here in the U.S we are losing that. Us as citizens need to start acting against our corrupt governments. We cannot afford to stay quiet anymore, we cannot afford to let the rich people keep abusing the rest of us.
