Really just goes to show that you can be a perfect, upstanding citizen, and stuff like this can still happen because of how idiotic other people are.
@Lewtable4 ай бұрын
To a certain extent I agree but it is always the driver's responsibility to keep an eye out for pedestrians, especially at crosswalks even if it's their turn to drive. You're the one in a several ton machine that can easily kill people, not them. The dude on the bike was a complete idiot, but the driver shouldn't have been gunning through just because it was a green light. Especially when just a few seconds earlier there was a woman running across too, so its not like there was reason to believe that the road was empty. That interaction was more of a case that traffic lights are garbage than anything else, when incoming drivers see that the light is green many of them subconsciously choose to accelerate instead of slow down, leading to situations like that.
@kranjos4 ай бұрын
@Lewtable I 100% agree that drivers shouldn't be accelerating through green lights. Maintaining speed or very slightly reducing speed while going through an intersection is not a bad thing at all. It only becomes an issue if people slow down too much (like going 30-40 through an intersection when the speed limit is 60). However in this video, it doesn't appear to be clear enough to determine how fast the driver was going, or whether they were accelerating, slowing, or maintaining speed while going through the intersection. Ultimately a car driving through an intersection on a green light at even 20 km/h would have easily knocked the cyclist off their bike, and had the ability to cause reasonable damage. People who are not in a car, yet crossing a road without a green walk signal should be paying careful attention to their surroundings, and if it's safe to cross. Like you said, a car far outweighs a bike/human. If you just assume that a road is safe to cross without checking, stuff like this is more likely to happen to you. Realistically if we all just do a better job at being aware/careful, regardless of whether we're driving, walking, riding a bike or other, then less incidents like this will happen.
