We did used to get lots of snow which lasted for weeks (40+ years ago) in the north of England. I used to go out in my front wheel drive car with normal tyres in the snow to practice winter driving & never got stuck, or in any difficulties at all (unlike many others). This stood me in good stead later as a driving instructor when I never missed a lesson due to the weather. Pupils were sometimes surprised to see that I had turned-up in 6" of snow but appreciated that the best time to learn in inclement weather is with your instructor by your side. Whether you're driving or walking in the snow, use the fresh untrodden/undriven-on snow as it has not been compacted & so there's less ice. If driving, use the highest gear & the least amount of throttle possible.
@Tigermoto Жыл бұрын
Agreed, My 2nd driving lesson was in about 5 inches of snow in the 90's, then passed my test in flurry weather. I used to go out in this weather special just to get more and more practice, It's a bit stupid of me but i've always had summer tyres on year round and have never got stuck. But one time i got a full set of part worn all seasons by accident and they were horribly noisy, but hell did they make snow trivial. But I'd say most of the drivers i've seen lack skill over equipment. I've pushed people out of car parks with 1 finger and instructions, driven people out of places in their own car when they were "Stuck."

Chains are too heavy. The best is to purchase a good quality decent tyre socks around £70. They are lightweight, easy to fit, and they don't rust. The worst-case scenario is those selfish idiots thinking that they have knowledge, who are diving fast, ignoring winter conditions and tailgating others. A few miles later, the traffic is jammed because they end up in the ditch or smashed in to other car. In my country over the winter period by the law, if you don't have winter tyres you get fine, points on your licence, and automatically you're not insured. Few inches in the UK and the whole country is on standby 😆 If the snow is sticky, it will fill the groves in the tyre then there's no grip 😳

Another thing many drivers forget to do when stuck on compressed snow is turn off the traction control. In this video drivers are not looking for fresh snow to drive on but on summer tyres its like pissing into the wind.
@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH Жыл бұрын
Why turn off the traction control? this is meant to be an anti spin mechanism that supposed to prevent getting stuck in the first place as spinning MUST be avoided at all costs as at speed spinning causes SERIOUS DAMAGE to tyres & transmission which on rear wheel drive is bad enough as they only spin foward & Back. On a front wheel drive the situation is even more dangerous & damaging as in addition to the foward & back spinning there is the angular aspect of the steering which when combined with the spinning causes serious damage to the CV joints which are being overstressed by the spinning as they are NOT designed to spin at the equivalent of 20mph+ at such extreme angles as common sense dictates the steering is only at full lock at very slow speeds & only at very minimal lock at high speeds. also all vehicles should have spin alarms which sound quietly at the slightest spin & get louder as the spin speed increases to teach drivers a lesson as they are totally unaware of the terrible noise nuisance they are creating outside which sounds like a cat screaming in pain & distress & constitutes antisocial behavior & dangerous driving it is ABOUT TIME action was taken to deal with those who use snow & ice as a valid excuse to commit such offences the penalty should be a temporary driving ban while the snow in question remains which is the best way of keeping the "Snow Idiots " off the roads & all of this nonsence could be put to a stop if local authorities were required by law to treat all roads or install ground heaters in dangerous locations to eliminate the danger altogether.

Very few drivers have had experience of driving in snow and ice so it takes them by surprise, and there are some drivers who never master it. Forty years ago, I lived on the side of the South Downs, and when it snowed heavily, I had to drive my neighbour's car out onto the main road where the snow ploughs had been. The only time he tried it, his car slid sideways down the hill until it hit a sniw drift. I had to get used to it because I was often out before the snow ploughs reached our area.

If that was me, a little stuck, I would first let some air out of the wheels that drive the car along. This could be the difference between your car better handling the snow and ice, or simply getting nowhere.

There is no such thing as snow tyres. A big misconception is that winter tyres are just for the snow which couldn't be further from.the truth. Winter tyres are for when temp drops below 7 degrees, not just snow. That's when they perform well in areas like braking, handling, traction, etc.. and the difference is day and night compared to a summer tyre being used in the winter. The question is how long do we have temp below 7 degrees jn the UK, I'd say 5-6 months in the year so winter tyres are not a waste.
