at 49:00, some coach cars have a back cab for when you only have a single engine in front and you need to go the other direction. So some coach cars have a cab.

40:48 it's a toll booth on I-95 this scenario is very detailed and accurate. I have spent most of my life living in that area and taking the train on these tracks. great scenario indeed. I just wish there were some Metro North Railroad trains on the track, besides just freight and other Acelas the train you are driving is a longer distance train, it usually travels Boston to DC, and beyond. but this section is slow going for all trains due to the traffic and curves the "tube" like train you saw is another Amtrak train, used for shorter distance runs, like Boston/CT/NYC stamford station IS just a giant bridge over the track. the whole station is in that building over the track

At 41:41 to answer your question about the tilt system being defaulted to "isolated," Metro North Railroad (the road that you are on in this part of the trip) does not allow tilting because of the close spacing of the tracks. I have a copy of the MNRR timetable and it specifies this. This is one of the many details with this sim scenario that is accurate. Very impressive. I am going to buy this one.

Listening to Squirrel commenting on all the things that are wrong with the American train system is great. When I, being from America, play this, it seems normal that the Acela is relegated to slow speed, but Squirrel does a great job of pointing out the issues with today's trains.
@VinceHere98
@VinceHere98 7 жыл бұрын
Pessimistic Videographer the Acela sometimes reaches 150 MPH.... But yeah, hate how the average speed is around 80-110.... it may be fast, but not fast enough for a high speed train. Luckily Amtrak is looking to speed up trains on the Northeast corridor, making it more compatible for High speed trains.
@DanTheCaptain
@DanTheCaptain 6 жыл бұрын
It is sad how behind the US is in transportation. Idealy speaking, the Acela Express should have it's own corridor at least between Boston and NYC. Having it's own corridor would allow it to travel much much faster and reduce overall journey time. Hopefully BrightLine Florida and California High Speed will be completed sometime soon and then it will start something in America.

American trains suck.
@DanTheCaptain
@DanTheCaptain 6 жыл бұрын
Owdog Well, they are definitely different and interesting to watch and learn about. Generally speaking American trains are actually not that bad in California and the Northeastern US and around Chicago. Those areas are the most developed, but even comparing those to other worldwide rail networks they still come out short. Sadly, there is massive potential for there to be more reliable passenger rail services around America but because the freight companies have a monopoly on the railways meaning the freight trains always have the right of way. Ideally it should be the other way around.
@mateojames3231
@mateojames3231 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel K I rode an Italian train from Rome to Venice. And my goodness they're fast. How the whole of Europe developed these beautiful rail lines confuses the heck out of me towards the US. And it's true that our freight services are monopolized, but it also makes goods travel faster. But I feel bad for Amtrak being crushed by Union Pacific, BNSF, and Southern Pacific. At least Caltrain doesn't share as much rail with UP... or else we wouldn't get electrified trains that are being constructed right now till 2022. However it does suck that the States are asking EUROPEAN Train Corporations for trains instead from the Country that invented the Trolley!

This is common procedure on most US commuter trains, municipal or Amtrak. The engineer is located in a cab car which is like a normal passenger car but has the driver controls in a front compartment so the driver can operate the train without needing to be in the locomotive.
@IsraelCube
@IsraelCube 6 жыл бұрын
This is the Metroliner Highspeed Train. It’s top speed was 120 mph but due to poor pulling mechanics of the actual train units, Amtrack had to tack on a couple locos on the front to pull and push them at their top speed.
@mentallyilldarkjeroid5378
@mentallyilldarkjeroid5378 6 жыл бұрын
Huh? I didn't know the engineer wasn't in the locomotive when pushing the cars. I figured engineers don't really have to see the track because it's not like they need to worry about running off the road. Where was the underground roundhouse switch called The Iron Clock near Penn Station where six tracks supposedly intersect in hour positions on the clock? It kind of doesn't make sense why there would be something like that. The Iron Clock was in the Pendergast novel called "Dance of Death." How to make the pantograph rub through the catenary wire? Two pieces of metal dragging against each other, sometimes at 100 miles per hour, you think by the end of the ride your pantograph will have a hole rubbed through and the wire it touched would be getting thinner and thinner with each train that passes by using it as it scrapes it up and frays it. They should show a child running out in front of the train and getting hit in the game. People should buy up my "Dance of Death" a James Grider novel on Amazon. I stole the Pendergast book's title. Ha, ha. That way I can afford to move out of the desert into a forested area like the one the train is passing through.

The weird depot just past New Rochelle is actually the north bound toll plaza on I-95. The body of water before Stamford is the Mianus River which flows into Long Island Sound. To the left on the river is the I-95 bridge which collapsed in the mid-80's. Surprised to see that much freight traffic and well as the Amtrak Metroliners but none of the Metro North commuter trains.

The real world resemblance of this game is amazing. The "depot" at 40:35 is actually a toll plaza on Interstate 95 by the Larchmont train station. Unfortunately, the Connecticut portion of this route is the slowest (especially around New London). This train never really runs at its full potential outside of the Providence-to-Boston segment.

48:57 No that doesnt happen a lot on Amtrak, it being pulled by 2 engines. However, only one of the routes to Providence has the 2 engines because the standard P40 cant reach that far as it is diesel powered. The other engine is what runs to Providence, Rhode Island more often because that is electric as well as Acela, and they often switch turns on the route to New Haven and Providence

They are roundish... that is the style of the amfleet cars on the Northeast Corridor. This is pretty accurate with some minor exceptions. Even interstate 95 North with the toll booths aka "strange depot" is spot on. The speed restrictions are based on the physical characteristics of the railroad... that territory isn't that fast compared to other areas. I can tell you this first hand.

Brilliant game... I was a QA tech for a company called TransEd Inc. in Barre VT. We assembled the coach and power car trucks for the Acela and shipped them up to the Bombardier assembly plant where the car bodies were assembled. The 041 contract was a nightmare, going WELL over budget and years past the predicted finish date, Bombardier was fined hundreds of millions of dollars for the delay in the end. Sadly, this caused the Bomb. plant in Barre to close forever and hundreds of people to lose their jobs. Being the first high speed train in America, it only runs between Boston and Washington DC and uses a hydraulic tilting bolster to lean the car bodies into the very curve-laden routes, thus allowing the train to achieve speeds of up to 117 mph.

The Acela Express runs from Boston to Washington DC in the New York, New Haven part of the NEC (North East Corridor and the map you're playing on) a good portion of the map you play on is owned by the MTA for it's Metro North Railroad (trains not shown in the scenario). Due to the normal traffic in the area the Acela isn't really able to go as fast as it can on Amtrak owned parts of the NEC.

The Amtrak trains are different from other passenger trains. The Engine is the one to be at the correct speed limit first. that is due to some of the routes have really old stuff on them. The coastal Starlight from Los Angeles, CA to WA as it passes through the Cascade Mountains of OR there is a wooden trestle bridge built in the 1950 still in working conditions that require the engine to cross the bridge over the river and highway at a fast 10 MPH. It is the oldest trestle bridge in the USA

That train you passed that looked like a London underground train is a regular Amtrak passenger car. Also this route does not get up to speed often because the tracks are so old and it is not a dedicated high speed line. That is the major problem with high speed trains in America, and why people still mostly fly to their destinations.

the reason the 20mph speed came early is because it was a speed reduction and you need to be at that speed before the front of the train passes the board or enters the speed zone which is why it took so many points and said you were speeding because you didn't slow down quick enough to be at 20mph in time for the speed change. For a speed increase you can not accelerate to that speed until the back of the train has passed the the board or entered that zone, for example if the speed were 20mph and it increased to 60mph, you wouldn't be able to accelerate to 60 until the back of the train is in the 60mph zone or else you are also classed as speeding.

There is actually an historic reason that the straight rights-of-way for high speed rail in Europe and Japan are not easy to do here in the US: we never had our rail-lnes and countryside destroyed by war. So, while that is a good thing for us, since we haven't had to live through it, it has left us stuck with the old rights-of-way with their curves to slow things up.

lol he is talking about the speed limit for his -500 points, and he didn't even know he crossed a red light.

+gecodo He didn't pass a red light, but a shunt light for low speed. The reason he got a lot of minus is because he is not following attention to the signal speed, which will overide the track speed. As you can see he is crossing alot of diverging track juctions which force the speed to be low!

"we're just going down a gentile slope" HA! 1.5% isn't gentile! 1.5% is steep! Improperly tackled, that grade would bring a train to its knees!

What you called a metro or underground train is actually the old style train that ran the route that you ran in this video. It was in fact, an Amtrak train.

acela trains run from Washington DC to boston. they only made like 30 of them and they cost about $20,000,000 to build each, the cars cannot be separated.

The speed limit changed early at 19:56 because you entered a yellow with the next signal being red. There's probably a law stating what the speed limit is with that type of signal.

I did this scenario whilst watching the video and I got a score of 901, which I think is pretty good considering the Amtrak Acela Express on New York - New Haven is quite a change from the train I drive, which is the class 377 on the Brighton Main Line.

Scenarios can be a pain at times when there are random bugs but usually they are fine, just very time consuming especially rush hour ones with all the AI around Clapham Junction/London Victoria/London Bridge etc.

Squirrel there aren't many passengers on the platform at NY Penn cause they usually hold them in the boarding areas and then call them when the train is ready to board, been there hundreds of times : P
