Loved your recipe and video, Stephanie. I've made these dates squares for years. My only twists on your recipe are to cook the dates with 50% water and 50% fresh orange juice. It's because I like the orange presence with the dates. I use less orange zest but keep the vanilla flavouring. I don't puree the date mixture because, as a personal preference, I enjoy the texture of the date filling as is.

Thank you ma'am for this typical Canadian treat recipe. As per Ayurveda, eating dates warms up your body, so eating it in winters along with nuts and seeds is a good idea. As for "matrimonial cookies" , my guess is , either it used to be served exclusively at weddings in those days, or, it is called so due to "matrimony" between the dates and the oatmeal :) Best regards !

Nicely done. We make pastry stuffed with dates in the Middle East but usually they are closed . Shaped circular or like a roll or like Cornish pasty but smaller.They are known as ma’mool or klecha. You can find ma’mool in most Arabic shops in the west. We certainly have them here in London . A little bit of cardamom powder would add such a lovely flavour.
@joyofbaking5 жыл бұрын
Wow. That sounds like a delicious pastry. Never thought to add cardamom, but it would go perfectly with the flavor of the dates.

Joy of Baking Thank you for replying . Indeed it would. Cardamom powder is so versatile . It adds such a different dimension to foods sweet or savoury . As I added in my previous comment , ma’mool which is a dates stuffed pastry is available in Arabic shops. I am certain you can find them in the us too. We have them here in London . I’m sure you will like them . Thanks again.
