In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about being in a romantic relationship with someone who has Relationship OCD. This episode is specifically for significant others/ partners of people who struggle with relationship OCD.
As a quick recap, Relationship OCD, also known as ROCD, is a subset of OCD in which sufferers are consumed with doubts about their relationship or their partner. Their mind continuously questions things like their love for their partner, their attraction to their partner, their compatibility with their partner, or their partner’s love for them.
So in this episode, I will be discussing practical ideas and guidance for creating a successful relationship with someone who is dealing with Relationship OCD. I also share specific things you can do in order to support your partner on this journey, while taking care of yourself as well.
Enjoy

7:24 - 7:44 really made it click for me. that was my a-ha moment with this video. I’ve read articles about what ROCD is and all that but that section really helped me understand it.

how do i not reinforce the cycle when my partner comes to me for comfort? do i comfort him or do i just let it go? he isn’t getting any professional help currently so he sometimes comes to me with his thoughts and i reassure him that they are just thoughts. is this the right thing to do?

Forcing someone get help is a dead-end, as you've probably noticed. Focus on your own well-being. Be a parter who doesn't criticize or give out uncolicited advice. Matt has an excellent video for partners where he explains secondary gains and how trying to identify those and eliminate them sometimes is helpful in passively forcing your partner to seek help. I've been with my wife for over 10 years and in our discussions she always denies it's ROCD but it's obvious that's the case.
