Hi Sebbo, new to the channel thanks to Hubnut. You are the Danish Hubnut but your garage is so much more organised. I had a 77 120Y, great car, bullet proof

That carb ended up looking great. The car seems much happier. Looking forward to your work on the ignition. Many thanks, it's terrific to see a car I owned in the 70's, mine was metallic blue.

😂 That first minute was pretty funny. With you pushing, I was waiting for the Datsun to go up the ramp and then off the other side. (That would happen in my garage!) 😅

I am amazed how rust free your 120Y is, I had a 1978 2 door that just dissolved every where, finally got scrapped after failing it's MOT at 12 years old! Mechanically, it was excellent with 90,000 miles on the clock, I have had a few Datsun/Nissan cars over the years, all were utterly reliable & never let me down.

We had a 1971 Datsun Sunny, the previous model, fantastic engine but rust got it in the end. Best mileage for me was 40mpg, imperial gallon, so around 33mpg US, or 14 km/l. However I did press on in those days. We also used the car to tow our caravan, when the mpg was around 28 mpg, imperial, 23.5mpg US, or 10 km/l.

Sounds like it may need a condenser. The distributor cap as you said and the rotor arm does it have a resistor in it?The points were burnt that is why I say a condenser.

Such a simple carb with a manual choke! A tidy engine bay with plenty of room to work. Simple breaker-point ignition. Ah...those were the days. When you could fix it on the side of the road with 3 wrenches and a screwdriver.

It's funny how these have got better looking over the years. When I was a kid, they were the nastiest, tinniest, least cool cars you could see on the road. But now it looks a bit like a miniature Plymouth Fury to me. Our horrible neighbour had a particularly awful brown one and I had a laugh one day when it slipped its parking brake and rolled backwards down the hill into another car. In the UK these were always known as the Datsun Sunny, though it did also say 120Y on the back. I'm sure somebody else has already pointed that out but I don't have time to check. I bet you'll be selling this car pretty soon, but it will have been worth getting and fixing.

Blimey mate, are you buying all of my dads old cars??? We had a Datsun 120Y estate version. It started to rust on the top of the wings. As my dad did not buy enough compound to go with the fibre, he filled the holes but it looked like it had grass growing out the top of the wings! Oh it was very reliable though... 😂

I am sure these early Datsun engines are related to BMC A series but with improved breathing, many of the manufacturers ( inc BMW, Toyopet, Datsun, and others ) their first was a copy of an Austin 7, rebadged.

@@edwardkennedy9919 not sure, could well be, you would surprised how many car manufacturers started out by copying Austin cars inc BMW so IF you ever an Austin 7 badged as a BMW, now you know.

@@barryphillips7327 yeah I remember around 1980 we had a datsun 1 ton pickup with a 1500 pushrod engine and my uncle a mechanic was doing some work on it and he said apart from the carburetor that it was a bmc engine.

With the state the distributor cap is in, it'd probably be prudent to replace the majority of the ignition system's electrical parts, it probably hasn't had a good service in that regard for a long time, so could do with plugs, wires, rotor, cap, points and condenser, make it nice and arcy-sparky... :D
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Yea... the spark system is quite neglected on this... most likely because its such a reliable car that people forget to service it...

Man, Sebbo, losing that ball is something I would do! Also, you might try using your starter with the car in 1st gear, clutch out. Should be strong enough to drive it into the garage.

Before you spend money on ignition parts put a timing light on it. But let it warm up properly 1st. After finding that ball bearing l hope you went and bought a lottery ticket.. P.S. love your parts bath. Every home should have one.@@SeasideGarage
