Thanks for this amazing video ! I own a 1989 200sx (240sx here in Europe) and the transmission is also a FS5W71C. I'm finishing the rebuild (torqued the mainshaft nut yesterday) and can't wait to test this rebuilt part in my car ! Anyway, thank you for this quite complete video, very helpful !

Thanks to your video, I now plan to try and repair mine. FYI, I have been linking your video in the comments of other videos, because there is a lot of bad information being spread out there. Mine is out of a 1997 D21 pickup and the 5th gear pops out. Again thanks for such a thorough video and any input you have on my situation is appreciated.
@gregoslund80914 жыл бұрын
If a gear pops out, that likely means the loose ball bearing in the intermediate plate is worn or the detent in the gear selector rod that engages the ball bearing is worn. I’m referring here to the ball bearing and spring assembly in the opening scene of the video. Worst case is you need to open up the transmission, removed the selector rod and see what’s going on and fix it. Other option that might work is remove the plug and spring from the exterior of the intermediate plate, use a magnet and remove/replace the ball bearing. You might be able to do this without removing the transmission from the truck! I never had to do this but the fact that the three plugs in the intermediate plate are accessible implies that this is possible. Make sense?
@somedaysailor79134 жыл бұрын
@@gregoslund8091 First, Thank you for the reply. If I understand correctly, I would have to remove the bottom plug on the side of the intermediate plate and check that ball bearing for wear? I'll definitely inspect that before I pull the unit. It started out just popping out under load, now it won't stay in 5th at all. Is it possible just to pull only the back of the casing, so I can repair only what is needed if the actual gear or syncro is bad? I have rebuilt engines, but I have never opened a transmission. Since all the other gears are fine, I would like to try and do as little as possible as I'm on a tight budget. Thanks again.
@@gregoslund8091 Thank you. I will be checking this tomorrow. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you sharing your expertise with all of us struggling to find good information.

Ball bearing is 5/16”. The other possibility is the spring is worn out.

Sounds like most parts came from the dealer and a couple online sites, but the part numbers would be so helpful. I have two of these transmissions and would like to rebuild both. Again great job!!

Great! they are kind of therapeutic in a way, and not hard to understand once you dig into it. The only thing I did not do that I would if I did one again would be to put the main shaft on some v blocks and dial indicate it just to see if the runout is excessive. I have heard there are shops that will straighten if needed.

Hey Greg, great video! I’m in the process of rebuilding my own transmission and I’m stuck at the point of putting the aft housing back onto the transmission. Can’t get the shifter and shift forks to line up for the life of me. Any advice or tips that might help?
@gregoslund80912 жыл бұрын
Yes, you have to 1. Make sure gears are in the neutral position 2.put shifter lever in and turn counter clockwise looking from the rear of the transmission 3. Slide the tail housing in and engage shifting guide rod with the cutout portion of the fork rod. It’s in the FSM on page MT-6 for the 82-83 5 speed. First look inside of the real extension and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
