Yeah, and the complexity of getting into the game. I skipped a few years and coming back was so expensive. Expansions, Seasons, passes, dungeons - so often I wanted to do an activity with a friend and one of us were missing something. I just checked my Steam purchase history - €95 alone on Destiny in 2023. And I already owned the game! It wasn’t cheap to play all their content.

Neo Liberal company does Neo Liberal tactics, what a surprise! Blame the employees, blame the fans, blame content creators, blame, blame, blame, what a shame. I am a recovering alcoholic, one of the first things I learnt was that I could not afford to blame people, places or things for my life situation. I am responsible for me! Bungie needs to accept responsibility and own their own problems, short-comings and weaknesses. I am tired of the Neo Liberal narrative that's invaded all, and corrupted everything.

The way Bungie talks about caring about those groups and players and employees and then laying off 100 of their most tenured workers in a way that also cuts them off from their stocks since they’re not vested and doesn’t allow them health insurance, etc. is a good example. It also often leads to corporations killing the golden goose like this, sabotaging the long term health of their company chasing short term quarterly profits.

Base closures back in the early '90s, when I had just purchased a new home, destroyed me caused me to go into a whole another line of work (and I ended up retiring with decent benefits and pay from that line of work that I didn't care for). Who who would have thought after finally being employed by the government, that you'd ever lose your job? If that was a concern, I never would have bought a house. Anyhow, good luck to you, You may not like it, but some kind of employment will come around to you, if even temporarily until you can find something you enjoy!

@@DioxideCad here's the problem with that logic. It WON'T save their jobs. Bungie was an 1100 employee company at the time this all happened. Even if the executives gave up their entire salary, it would've added up to PENNIES in the pockets of the lower employees. People don't understand how little the executives' salaries impact a company's bottom line. It's a drop in the bucket. That dude at Nintendo didn't save anybody by doing what he did. His thinking was flawed and it was a PR move, pure and simple. A game or company doing badly isn't always due to bad management. In fact, it rarely is. It's usually due to changing economics that can't be overcome. For example, one thing they talked about in here was the revenue loss. The revenue projections have come out and they were VERY reasonable for a company of that size, and still the company missed it. They can't MAKE players buy stuff.

@KusuriyaV At this point Jirard and his charity organization have made no public response and an attempt to remove the videos was made by the open hand charity. Also Jirard had a heads up via talking with Mutahar and Karl before the videos went up. It should have been super easy to make a statement saying the funds are still there and will be donated to research immediately, or at least very soon. Yet there is only silence. Hypothetically, even if the money is gone, Jirard should be able to use $650,000 of his own funds and donate to a research as promised. But not even that has happened. I'm willing to bet his family that run the charity stole the money and Jirard is trying to find a way not to be thrown under the bus.

I feel like "Games as a Service" was able to gain a solid foothold in part thanks to that there weren't any massive year of hit video games releasing. When there's only 1-3 games max that the average gamer is interested in playing per year then it's much easier to spend most of your free time playing your live-service game. But when you get showered in 9/10 and 10/10 games your 5+ year old grindfest game starts looking much grayer.

I mean, it bothers me that no one ever mentions Myth. He was there for far longer than even mentioning Halo implies. Mike started working with Bungie in 1997, years before Halo. Mike was the one who wrote The Siege of Madrigal. If you guys like the early Halo music, definitely look up the music from Myth. That aside, yeah, it sucks that a lot of people aren't bringing up Halo. Mike also was the one who specifically wrote Never Forget, which is a piece that transcends Destiny, Halo, and even gaming to a noticeable degree. Edit - to be clear, I wasn't talking about Ralph in this comment, I was talking about the comments I've seen from the random Destiny fans on Twitter and the like.

@seaniverse
@seaniverse 10 ай бұрын
@therotten6152 I’m not a Destiny player for one, but at least mentioning that he worked on Halo: CE gives context that he was there for 30ish years. Only mentioning that he composed Destiny makes it seem like he was there for only 10-12 years. So… yeah… mentioning how long he worked there is very important to show just how bad of a betrayal this was not just to him, but to the rest of Bungie’s laid off staff. It has nothing to do with toxicity, everything to do with context.
@seaniverse
@seaniverse 10 ай бұрын
@therotten6152 TWIVG isn’t the podcast, so why would you assume I’ve watched it? I did, but you shouldn’t assume. I straight up don’t remember him mentioning a number of years, but I could be wrong so I’ll scrub through it later… but mentioning Halo still isn’t moot because it does have something other than the implication of time: respect. Destiny is troubled overall with some highlights, Bungie’s Halo games at their peak changed FPS’s and console gaming and at their worst we’re still pretty damn good. This wasn’t in my argument before since I want to make sure he mentioned ALL of the accolades that Salvatori had, not just Destiny, but somehow you’ve misconstrued that into hate for Destiny or something. I love all of the man’s works and just don’t want to see his best stuff go completely unmentioned.

A friend had gifted me Destiny 2 and it's expansions up to...Beyond Light I believe, or The Witch Queen. He was a massive Destiny 2 fan despite its issues, with well over 1000 hours into the game. I did have fun, but the content vaulting, and their monetization practices, really rubbed me the wrong way. So did their treatment of PVP. It really did give me a feeling of distrust from the beginning, and a feeling of being taken advantage of, in a weird way in which few games have done. Fast forward to now. He played Lightfall and hated it. Ongoing issues with the game still aren't addressed. Monetization is still terrible. And now the layoffs of many beloved staff members, despite $1 billion being set aside for "employee retention." He won't buy The Final Shape, or even play the other content anymore. He's done. I really feel like people who love Destiny 2 and Bungie are viewing them through rose-colored glasses. Seeing them in a light that would have made sense several years ago, but does not fit with the Bungie of today. Sure, there are many great people working over there, but Bungie is a very large developer, owned by a very large company. The overall entity is no longer what it was, or how it is remembered or thought of. Once you grow to that size, eventually, the soul tends to get scooped out. You turn into the modern day Blizzard or Bioware. Genuinely think that is what is happening over at Bungie, and the fans are going through the process of wrestling with these changes. Some accepted the changes, and some can't, and think that we will get back good ol' Bungie. I'd love to be wrong, I hope I am, because I know Bungie is special to a lot of people. It's just that I've been gaming for coming up on three decades now since I was little. I've become somewhat pessimistic after all the things I have seen in that time. Edit: I would like to add that being a modern day Blizzard or Bioware does not mean I think they can't make fun games. I am cautiously optimistic Bioware has learned from their shortcomings in recent games and will make a decent game out of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. And despite every despicable thing Blizzard has done I immensely enjoyed my first playthrough of Diablo 4. And I am very curious to see what Bungie's Marathon will look like. But being the companies they are today, buying and playing their games comes with a whole host of potential risks on our parts, and at a very high asking price too. 2nd Edit: Also regarding Datto's comments on FFXIV. He is right in that it is a very dialogue/cutscene heavy game, and because of that it is not for everyone. That being said, Square Enix has delivered over and over, on both expansions and periodic content releases. Even in the case of Stormblood, the most disliked FFXIV expansion, it could be said that it's only crime was being a 7/10 sandwiched between Heavensward and Shadowbringers. They know how to keep the vast majority of their players happy, Bungie does not.

The three guests that are seen as three of the pillars of the community echoed a lot player sentiment, especially for me, personally. I especially appreciate Byf in all of his insightful takes.
