Datto Does Anthem: First Gameplay Hands-On Impressions

I got some hands on time with Anthem at EA Play, so let's do a crash course on some stuff that we learned about Anthem and some quick thoughts on what I thought on the time I had with the game, which was not very long.
If I were to sum up my thoughts into a couple of sentences, it would be: It was better than I was expecting it to be. I don't think anything really blew me away, but I had fun with what I got to play and look forward to the next time I get to play it and learn more about the game. It played a lot better than the on stage demo made it seem like it did. If you're new here, maybe because of this video, sorry, I'm very long winded in my videos.

EA/Bioware saw your disappointment with Destiny 2 and realized what an opportunity for them it would be if you were to influence people into going for Anthem next year? Edit: Might need to spell this out to avoid misunderstandings, but I don't mean to offend you with the question. Rustyburnz I know what you’re saying, but the Destiny crowd is a devoted one, almost to a fault, regardless of new trailers or info.... I know, I use to be one of them lol. Sucks that if you watch a streamer who maybe got popular on Destiny stream other games it seems like 80% of the chat is basically “Destiny when” or “this isn’t Destiny.” It’s inevitable to some extent, I guess. Not shitting on the game or community, it’s not for me anymore but a lot of people still enjoy it obviously. I feel for the streamers and content creators sometimes though.

Yeah, this game definitely looks like its more on the rpg side of things like borderlands compared to Destiny, which is a pro imo since Destiny 2 currently really lacks any depth feels way to slow to be warframe like though Warframe eventually becomes "Press 2 buttons and see how half the map dies" and has way faster movement

No PvP? BLESS. And if there is PvP, I hope nothing is locked to that mode, no guns or armor or anything. And if thsi ends up doing PvP, I pray that Borderlands 3 doesn't and just keeps it to the old mini 1v1. Finally, let's get some good ass PvE looter shooters in here.

MidnightChampion yup. Bungie catering to pvp players is single handedly responsible for the flop destiny 2 ended up being. Skill trees, the weapon system, and the boring guns were all intentional design decisions made to make the pvp easier to balance.

Every time I hear someone talk about their impressions of this game from the E3 demo, I get a little more skeptical. It doesn't seem like you or Arrekz were absolutely blown away from what you experienced. I hope they really sell us in the next 8 months, I want to trust that this won't disappoint us badly.

I wasn't completely blown away, but that's because there's only so many things a looter shooter game can do to make people go crazy. I was happy with what I played though, it was competent, I had fun with it. I think the biggest thing is gonna be fatigue with a lot of people. The Destiny crowd is always looking for the next looter shooter, but always come back. Can Anthem make enough of an impact with their game, can they make it feel different enough compared to other games in the genre? Time will tell. But that will be the key.

I hope Anthem and Destiny can coexist. I think they are similar enough to attract a similar audience but different enough to be their own experiences. I hope that the games will coexist, compete and result in better content for everyone. Maybe some competition in the Sci-Fi Looter Shooter market will light a fire under Bungie's ass and make them really double down on making the game even better, plus Anthem looks cool so that means another looter shooter to enjoy when it drops.

Destiny cant exist for long unfort. The game engine means it takes so long to make content compared to other devs, its like a boxing match and Bungie has both hands tied behind its back lol Cyberpunk, Anthem, BO4, new BF, RedDead, Borderlands3... thats some big guns coming soon and none of em were rushed in 16 months. Prob is Bungie charge like £150 for what u get in other titles at launch for £50 :L

No PvP actually sounds quite great to me. I don't play a shooter looter for it's PvP. Like Destiny, I don't play it for that, even if it's fun from time to time. I play it for the raids and stuff like that. The high end PvE experience. When I wanna play PvP shooters I jump on games like R6. I think this is actually a great idea because it takes off a lot of boundaries on weapon design and balance

Seems like some positive stuff here. Between weapon slots, ability slots, and each javelin's individual stats, we could be looking at a pretty solid game as far as depth of customization. If javelins have really specific stats that can be altered or upgraded in some way, or if pilots have stats that can be upgraded, I will be immensely happy.

Death By Snu Snu you can toggle them on and off. A Dev confirmed this. They said the feature to toggle on and off damage numbers isn’t currently available but they are actively looking into making that a thing. Long story short, you can toggle it on and off

Cool stuff, I want some more story stuff to go along with this. One of the reasons I got into the Destiny Hype was the slow trickle of info on the story and enemies. I remember reading info on the collapse and the Traveler and being genuinely intrigued to know more. It would be wise of them to start working in the reason we fighting more going forward.

I'm pretty sure they confirmed that you can matchmake for everything including strongholds. The quote was in response to a concern about having nobody to play with. They said something to the effect of, "There's matchmaking. We'll always fill your squad for you if you need it."

Datto, does this feel like a D1 situation (hindsight is rough i know), where BW has the gameplay down but has no idea where to go with it? They have shown no progression, no gear, no skills. I can't imagine they have any endgame figured out, i feel like maybe they would've teased it if they had anything. Can you talk about any of that? (huge fan, keep it up, love your stuff)

Can't confirm where I heard this, but I heard somewhere that there will be matchmaking for every activity meant to be done co-op (and I think every single activity can be done co-op if you want). Anthem looks good. Definitely keeping my eye on it. Glad to know that the gameplay is solid. I wasn't expecting to get blown away since BioWare isn't known for their shooty bits in their games, but since Mass Effect 2, they've had some solid gunplay that they've only improved on. Honestly, that's where a looter-shooter shared-world MMO-lite whatever lives and dies. If it feels good to play, people will enjoy whatever stupid bullshit is thrown their way (hence the reason people still play Destiny despite a lackluster story, mostly uninteresting characters, repetitive missions, lack of enemy variety, and lack of content).

Hearing this being described, it seems like Bioware is doing a Warframe type game. Javelins are the Frames, etc, etc.
