Things I learned earlier yesterday. If you dissolve a small amount of rosin in Isopropyl other alcohol to make liquid rosin, you can lift the stings then rub the liquid rosin on the wheel to rosin it nice and fast. Then with the strings still lifted, dab a small amount of liquid rosin on each string just above the wheel & wait till it sets, then apply the cotton. The rosin will hold the cotton in place as you play. You don't want the liquid saturating the cotton as rosin on rosin will squeak badly. If at any time later, the string gets squeaky, add more cotton or replace the cotton as it's worn. If you want to remove rosined cotton, lift the string and wet a finger in alcohol and dab the the cotton but don't touch the wheel. wait a few seconds for the rosin the go soft, slide the cotton away from the wheel and remove it from the string.

Kid, and please don't be offended by the term, I'm an old man, in comparison, you, are damn talented, knowledgeable, formidable and gifted. I've similar interest, music the center of my life, wrapped around food, tech, and recently discovering the building and making world... Anyway, I digress, thank you for sharing this, and everything you are up to. I'm in awe every time I open one of your vid's. Mark my words, the happy man, is the man that pursues all that is in front of him with passion and full on engagement. You, are the epitome of this. Namaste!

It isn't "decent", it is a fantastic and really epic work. It's absolutely great. I didn't like the sound from a "Drehleier", but it is a great example what you can do with the right tools, the will, endurance and skills at home.

Either tuned incorrectly or too much/too little rosin. Looks really nice though.

Great work! I think there is so much tension on drone and trompette strings, and may be too much rosin.

What did you use for the celtic knot design on the top of the cover plate?

I just googled Celtic knot and then drew up the design by hand based on that.

Did you have someone else cut out your face and back pieces? It doesn't look like the laser you used could cut something that long. Thank you.
@DarkArtGuitars3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I used a larger laser of a friend to cut those. If you don't know anyone you could also cut them by hand as it is only two pieces and not too complicated.

It seems the drones way over power the melody strings. Is that adjustable so more melody is heard?
@DarkArtGuitars3 жыл бұрын
My melody strings never worked too well due to using slightly wrong strings. But I'm sure there are small things you could tweak to change this. Though in the end you still have to keep in mind that this is a plywood instrument and you can't really compare it to a high quality hand made one in terms of sound quality.

What is the fastest PLA 3d printer you've got? medium size, decent quality not too expensive, but fast?
@shigerufan12 жыл бұрын
That limitation is more on the slicing program rather than the printer itself, and largely depends on layer height, infill%, wall thickness, etc. which is mostly determined by the settings in whatever software you choose to use. PLA printers are slower by default as they have to print each layer manually, as opposed to resin which can print a layer just by shining a UV light for 3 seconds. As far as I can tell the Ender 3 with the Ultramaker 5 slicer is perfectly capable of meeting most personal use needs.

I live in an apartment. Don't have a garage to use as a shop to do woodwork in. Been looking at Hurdy Gurdy kits. Buy they're too expensive. When you consider what it would cost just to buy the wood and parts you need to make one kit. Yourself. U-gears uses the same amount of wood and goes for only $60 to $80 dollars for their model kit. Which is great but not a real playing instrument, just a model. If someone could produce a kit like the Nerdy Gurdy or the one on Music maker and sell it for under $300. I'm sure they'd still make good money and would get more buyer's, by selling it at a more affordable price.!

I don’t know if it’s just me but it sounds kinda out of tune.
@ulricus12 жыл бұрын
An instrument painted black means allways: Bad wood beyond the colour". If you have a AAA- grade top you never will paint it black. The sound of this plywood box is abominable. Together with the drones the melody is pure absent.
@DarkArtGuitars2 жыл бұрын
It is made from roughly $10 worth of plywood, so yea, it will sound worse than a proper instrument.
