A beautiful plant, truly, but also one that deserves the utmost reverence and respect. This looks to be a D. Stramonium (Jimson Weed), which can be quite endemic to certain places in the Southeastern US. Having researched Datura in general for a college paper, I can safely say that while touching the leaves and stem isn’t “dangerous” per se; it is beyond best practice to wear gloves when handling the plant, as the tropane alkaloids (scopolamine, hyoscyamine, atropine, etc.) can infiltrate through small cuts; leading to a negative experience. In regards to cultural uses, the Datura plant has notably been used by the Luiseño peoples in the Southwest for their Toloache ceremonies for centuries; along with other cultures in the native range of the plants. The plant deserves to stay good sir, just...fence it off to prevent unwanted contact between pets, kids, the uninformed...and best practice is cutting the pods from the plant once they turn brown (but before splitting); this way you can decide if you want to grow more of them. They go wonderfully in a night garden! *Edit:* whoever left comment number 3, I can’t see what was written. Try leaving a generic “hi” or something so I can converse with you!

I’ll have to research how far north the range can be, I know at least for D. FYI the exact same effects will be the same from any of the solinacia plants including brugmancia, atropa belladonna, datura stramonium, black henbane though with the exception of the mandrake as literally only one drop of the sap from the root of the mandrake containing so much of a highly concetration of the tropain alkoloids that will most certainly cause your death. My recommendation would be the fruits of the atropa belladonna a.k.a deadly nightshade as the small black cherrys that are produced by the infamous deadly nightshade is actually a fairly safe way to be able to dose the experience just right as the fruits contain pretty much the exact same amount of the alkoloids that I have been told that you are able to safely consume at least four or five of the small black fruits of the plant though like all nightshades the entire plant is loaded with the tropain alkoloids that pretty much no matter what part of these plants you choose to consume will most definitely be very easily capable of causing extremely terrifying results which depending on what part of which plant you choose to consume the experience can apparently last anywhere up to twelve days that is counting on the fact that you don't consume to much of any kind of nightshade as this will most certainly result in death which is something that I'm pretty sure you want to avoid though apparently the seeds of datura stramonium are the best for being able to find the correct dose I'm myself growing datura ballerina simply because of the most beautiful of any flowers that I have ever seen are produced by datura ballerina though I do also have the seeds of datura stramonium and atropa belladonna 🙄🥺😱.....🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Browsing animals usually avoid eating the plants due to its foul odor and taste, so its probably why the pigs avoid it. Yes Datura and tobacco are both in the Solanaceae family (as well as potato, eggplant, tomato). I think basically any of the nightshades fall into this category.

Terrence Mckenna was essentially the guru of self-exploration via hallucinogens. He wasn't much afraid to try any, liked to do things that were extreme, and often would do so alone in the dark. He decided to try Datura. He described the feeling as fading in and out of a state where he'd feel no inebriation or "trip", to one where he'd see wraiths drifting into his open window and dropping sheets of newsprint slowly through the air, onto his lap. He'd then bend over and read the newsprint, and this apparently went on for hours. Terrence had a hard time realizing when he was "tripping" and when he was not, which is the most dangerous element of this substance. It wraps reality and it's hallucinatory imagery together perfectly, so as to disallow the user the understanding of what is a hallucination and what is really there. This is why it is not classified as a hallucinogen, but a deliriant. Strongly recommend not using this plant unless you know exactly what you are doing. People who think they know it well can die from a plant that grew in an optimum environment and has produced a higher level of alkaloids. Datura Stramonium varies greatly in potency depending on environment and nutrient availability. A pretty flower, a conversation piece. Not a fun salad. People who don't die after eating enough to have long hallucinatory experiences often describe being surrounded by wounded or dead people, being whispered dark and morbid things from seemingly nowhere, and as a common running them seem to deter from experiencing the plant a second time.

Hello Todd! Could you tell me about the scent of the datura flowers? The rest of the internet says "strong and sweet" and I'm wondering is it like rue or balsam of peru, vanilla or something more herbal? Is it synthetically perfumey or more like jasmine or honeysuckle? Could you compare it to anything more widely known? @oneseedoneworld
@oneseedoneworld Жыл бұрын
Datura metal (Purple Datura) is the species that is used for asthma. The leaves and seeds are sometimes dried, pulverized, and ignited in order to breathe the fumes for the treatment of asthma. However, one study I read stated: It contains a variety of alkaloids including atropine and scopolamine that can cause anticholinergic poisoning if taken in large doses. Atropine and scopolamine act on the muscarinic receptors by blocking them (particularly the M(2) receptors) on airway smooth muscle and submucosal gland cells. However, this will cause a continuous release in acetylcholine (Ach). Ach also act on nicotinic receptors; however, it is known that "over exposure" of nicotinic receptors may cause desensitization. Citation: (Pretorius E, Marx J. Datura stramonium in asthma treatment and possible effects on prenatal development. Environ Toxicol Pharmacol. 2006 May;21(3):331-7. doi: 10.1016/j.etap.2005.10.006. Epub 2006 Jan 6. PMID: 21783676.) I wouldn't recommend trying it.
