@@TonyTurner yeah had they did, the friend dynamic would’ve likely split up into two: Dijonay with LaCi, and Penny with Zoey, unless Zoey keeps being a follower. I imagine college Penny just being friends with Zoey, Michael, and Sticky(unless they stick with the idea of recasting him with “Maya” and “KG”). The Chang Triplet, Myron and maybe Kwok would have been recurring characters with storylines of their own that dealt with bullying, standards and micro-aggression. Also, we would have gotten an update on 15 Cent and his relationship with Penny. Plus, the several episodes they have given us on the actual reboot: “The End of Innocence(S2 Ep6)”, “Grandma’s Hands(S2 Ep2)”, “A Perfect 10(S2 Ep4)”, “Father Figures(S1 Ep4)”, “Raging Bully(S1 Ep9)” and Bad Influencer(S1 Ep2) could’ve recounted experiences from the past show, incorporating them as life lessons in the revival.

Agreed. You would think that in the year of Katya’s internet 2024 that we could have a nerdy character who always seemed pretty comfortable in and with themselves have a “glow up” without completely changing everything that made them relatable to viewers in the first place. Sigh. 😕

I kinda feel like it was the ugly duckling trope, zoey was the one made of for her looks and had a whole make over episode, She didnt have a butt or boobs like the other girls she was probably a late developer as someone who was the ugly duckling and a red head i actually love seeing her being shown as attractive I and lots of girls who were sticks as teenagers, got their adult body after Graduation, I had no hips as a teen, now at 22 i have a hour glass shape (no surgeries)

They really should have found a middle ground between the two designs. Let her grow into her features, but keep her glasses and give her cuter frames. Don't overly change her fashion, but tweak it a little to show she has more confidence in choosing her wardrobe. And have dancing still be her thing. It always makes me so mad when writers and such put more effort into doing things poorly than it would often take to make things make sense and not send messed up messages.

This is honestly relatable. I was a nerdy kid that got bullied a lot, but now, years later, consider myself handsome. Multiple people have even said I could be a model. The biggest takeaway is that who you are in highschool in no way defines you for the rest of your life. ❤

I was mostly indifferent to Zoey's glow-up when I first saw it, but now I realize that they completely changed her character to seem more "grown-up", while everyone else pretty much stayed the same. Like Zoey herself wasn't seen as good enough. I hated that they took away her glasses. They didn't take away Myron's glasses in his college design. There are alot of adults that wore glasses during childhood that still wear them. They still look attractive, maybe even more so because they learned to choose frames that compliment their face and eye shape. It also would have been interesting to see Zoey with a shorter hair style.

Remember the Agatha episode from the OG Proud Family where they were all doing auditions to be on the WK Teen Idol show? When Zoey went up, she had an unbelievably ethereal voice, so maybe they decided to bring that back for her college self 😂

I am not really happy with her glow up to be honest because yes she looks good but it says to girls with glasses like myself that you cant be acceptable or desirable unless you look like some super model. And to be brutality honest Zoey looks like a cartoon version of Phoebe from friends then the Zoey we know and love.

When it comes to her character design, I noticed that in the reboot, her skin is almost actual White, compared to her original design where she had peach colored skin. Heck, as I'm, typing this comment, two of the suggested videos are your "Desirability Politics" and "Light Skin Favoritism" videos, which show old design and current one respectively, and the difference is so drastic.

The glasses trophies actually pretty ableist because like it's like telling someone who needs a prosthetic that it looks super ugly and and that they look like a freak wearing it which is very rude and not good and why do we ever have this as a trope for teenagers

Even if you have the money it's not really an option for kids / teens. Like I don't know the minimum age for contacts but the surgery is usually not done before the mid twenties because they want to make sure people are fully grown. So generally those things only become an option after years of potential bullying.

I love both designs. I'm a little sad they didn't do the original because it's what I grew up with, but I acknowledge some people change as they get older. Zoey deserves the right to reinvent herself after all the ish her "friends" put her through.

The thing with glow ups is that they can work, but you have to stay true to the original character. When changing someone's wardrobe, you still want to find something that feels like their style, but something that compliments them better than what they were originally wearing. For Zoey specifically. Look, style changes as you grow up, I know I wear a lot more black than I used to. But, just because someone has a "glow up" doesn't mean they are suddenly better. She should still feel like the same person, and if her friends are true friends, they should treat her the same as they did before.

I wish they kept her glasses. Different style and different colored glasses. (As a child I’d always get black square glasses. But now as an adult, I’ve chosen more colorful glasses.) They could give her long hair or could’ve given her even shorter hair, a pixie cut.

I've been watching your videos for a while now Mister Turner, I have to say I adore the commentary in all your videos. This is episode, Zoey's glow up I feel was something she lowkey deserved it as a character. Zoey had always been designated as the group's punching bag so for her to go from the low self-esteem having 'ugly duckling' to finally becoming just as 'pretty' as her friends really could effect their relationship going forward, if the writers ever explored it more with a new series. Someone that has always been made to feel unpretty or less than their peers, have a very hard time adjusting once they realize they aren't actually ugly or unskilled. It would be a very interesting concept to be explored if they ever made a series where the girls are in College. Zoey will find her self-worth and when she reflects on her younger years she would be able to see her 'friends' weren't really friends at all. Watching the Proud Family, I always hated how they portrayed the groups dynamics, I always found it fake and honestly unhealthy, the fact that the group of girls themselves are often their own enemy within the episodes instead of having some opposing group of girls their own age, made the friendship dubious at best. They had the Gross Sisters sure but they weren't utilized and often didn't show up that much. I just have a lot of thoughts on this topic and could talk about it for hours. Either way, Zoey deserved her glow up and maybe it will help her get better friends and teach the others that they need to value people a little more.

Like oh Zoey going to look the cutest but no they played more heavy in her "GEEKYNESS". like she can look great but be the same zoey. Heck that could have been an episode. To me, nothing says "I'm a lazy character designer" as much as having no glasses be a necessary part of a glow up. I understand that its shorthand, but it still is confusing to me because a lot of the cool kids when I was in school wore glasses. Wearing glasses didn't make them less attractive or less cool, and they still had a lot of friends, so the fact that character designers cannot fathom a character with glasses that is still cool is baffling to me

Honestly? I loved Zoe’s glow-up! I wish they kept the glasses, but I think that her character really ‘deserved’ it. The nerdy, not conventionally attractive, glasses girl to gorgeous is a troupe I definitely love. She was one of my favourite characters so I might be a bit biased that way, but it just seems like Zoe really “grew up”. I think it really fit her! You made pretty good points in the video in general about glow-ups, people treating you better, etc. Your videos are great, keep up the good work!

Great video bro! Zoey has always been beautiful, cool, intelligent, sassy, and down to earth. Her character design in the reboot is nice too. I mean........she literally is in the same boat as Penny. Because this "friend group" are so superficial and just shows you have to create your own lane. People will naturally like you for the way you are. I feel Zoey being the "white girl in the friend group" is a cop out and a distaste. Zoey is cool with me always. Keep up the amazing work!!! 💖💯

In all honesty, with how many mistakes their making with the re-boot, I wouldn't want to see them in high school or collage. Now if it were different writers (to where in the story line Penny can have real friends instead of fake ones) I'd probably be more interested.

6:13 😭 They could've made a good thing with this but no! It could've been an episode where like, we see Zoey worried about something and shown she is "bad" at her dancing. But because we(& the characters) know of how good at it she is in the past, we discovered that the problem isn't her being sad she 'can't dance', but something else.. like her needing to perform infront of OTHER unfamiliar people for example .. So, when she spends time with Bobby she appreciates it all, and with freely being allowed to reveal how she'd been feeling for awhile to someone. And he teaches her, gives her time and reminisces/talks about how it is to perform. We could slowly see the over-thinking and resulting lack of confidence/stiffness go away.. Either from appreciating Bobby's listening ear, from learning new techniques of the music & dances or some healthy mix of that. Then by the end, she'll be good as new or even better in a way. Succeeding were she thought she'd fail.

I think it would be cool to see them in college. Granted, they should be in their 30s, but it would be fun to relive the college years with this show. Zoe’s glow up reminds me of princess Mia from the Princess diaries. They removed her glasses and straighten her hair plus gave her a more polished wardrobe, then boom instant popularity and attraction. Except her friend was a hater. Something similar happened to me when I got contacts going into high school. I guess people could see my eyes and my entire face because glasses are so much of a mask apparently. 😂😂 I was still picked on for being tall, but no one said I was ugly or anything. And in college, guys were always trying to be in my face. Now, I’m back to wearing glasses because I want to. And I’m redefining what supposed to be pretty. Glasses are pretty because I’m the one that gets to decide what’s pretty.

If only episodes they did “When You Wish Upon a Roker” and “Us Again” in the reboot were made as the actual series. Plus, I wish they made the movie canon to Louder and Prouder because at least we know what happened to 15 Cent and how the family and friends dynamic developed since the 2005 movie(unless Dijonay and LaCi stay the same fake and trifling friends as before). I imagine college Penny just being friends with Zoey and Michael while getting reacquainted with the Gross Sisters, Chang Triplets and Kwok. Also, The Chang Triplet, Michael and maybe Kwok would be recurring characters with storylines of their own, same with new characters like Maya, KG, and LaBrea. I imagine in the revival, Zoey grows to have a backbone, along with Penny(when it comes to ending her friendship with Dijonay).

I have red hair and glasses. I guess i always felt ugly because glasses and being either overweight or too skinny is a trope in modern tv for unattractiveness. I really wish they could have just slightly changed her. Like kept glasses and maybe she started working out or running or something to make herself feel better. Focus on self vs outside

TBH. I always thought if they were to give her a “Glow-Up” I felt like they would have to meet Zoey somewhere in the middle. Also I always thought her design in L&P was pretty good like much of the cast. Enhanced what made Zoey Howzer have a good design without changing much. As for her “Glow-Up” it’s more of an “Early Call-Up” to me (Pro Wrestling Term By-the-By). Yeah, I always thought Zoey’s First & Third Concept Designs were the perfect evolutions to her character. One thing I would add is to place the glasses to her Top and put Shades Above Her Eyes in the first (The same could be done for the Third as well). I feel like if a character were to go through a redesign you need to keep the core elements that make that character said character…getting rid of the adorkableness makes her another basic pretty face…this is what I’m worried about if Agatha eventually returns. That is my philosophy if you were to make a Pretty & Geeky Character find something that keeps both elements to create a fine balance. (Alya from Miraculous in her Beta and Final Designs show this.) But yeah, pretty good observation on this…but long arse message ain’t it? Sorry bout that.

I hope really they corrected stuff with Zoey, and maybe seeing some of her home life. I really loved her, but much in the reboot even with some of the bad stuff that has happend to her like the thing with noah. taking about about her "lack of ability" dacing in the reboot, for me she wasn`t bad, and actually that episode shere she`s bandmaster is literally the higest point of Zoey in the reboot so far.

With the heavier topics they want to cover it would have made more sense to age them up to collage. Even Maya, who I dislike because of how "fake woke" she comes off as, would have thrived being that "annoying" collage friend who thinks they know everything about PC culture only to be humbled when their sometimes extreme views don't line up with real life. Sadly they wanted to keep the rest of the proud family relevant to the story but they could have still had her living under "their roof". In fact most issues we have with the reboot would be non-issues if they were older. Like the one where they lock Penny out of the house! If she was an 18 yo collage student who went out partying while still living with their rules it would still be awful thing to do but she would be an ADULT who made ADULT decisions. Have her siblings be the "pre-teens" that Oscar has to manage while dealing with letting go of penny becoming an adult. (Especially with BeBe being on the spectrum...)

Well, like I said before, the show should’ve been a follow up to the proud family movie where Penny and her friends were move into high school because how were they grow but they’re still in middle school that doesn’t make any sense on middle school should be aging like a high school student they look like high schoolers in middle school, which makes no damn All of their friends and family age and they haven’t it just didn’t make any sense. That’s why the show was a failure from the gecko. You know they try to keep them in that middle school thing but you know you got and that’s what really been killing. A lot of Disney shows is that they don’t let the kids grow to keep them in this wonder instead of like understanding like you can still have them have ChiLDREN. I mean, hell why do you think people love boy meets world or Degrassi because even though the target audience for children and they allow characters to grow up and still follow along with their stories, you know what I’m saying and that’s what should happen.

it’s pretty common that after puberty and middle high school people “glow up” because you’re awkward kids turning into adults so having her look prettier i don’t think is a bad thing. what is a bad thing is how they pretty much assassinated her character. hot girls can’t like nerd shit? they can’t wear glasses? they have to be in crop tops and short shorts? you can still make her hot without turning her into a new character. keep her sense of style from the first pass of designs but give her the softer face. keep her hair short but curl it and tie it part of it back so it looks more mature and show she’s more confident in herself. deepen her voice to show maturity but still keep the hoarse tone zoey being the nerdy girl isn’t a bad thing because there are a ton of nerd girls in the world, but she can still be a nerd and have a glow up also let her dance!!

I think her lips are the thing throwing me off the most after the fact her head looks like a different shape without the glasses, but like college Zoe doesn't look like Zoe? She looks more like... like she was drawn in the style of a Disney Princess but by someone who is a good artist but doesn't have experience drawing in Disney's signature 2D style. I think they should have met somewhere in the middle- longer hair, cute outfit, and different glasses. The first one gives like, aged up Timmy Turner where they just put young Zoe's head onto older Zoey's body.

I used to watch the original Proud Family and I loved it. I tried so hard to watch the new version of Proud Family but it just feels really disingenuous like they’re trying way too hard to appeal to the new generation! Just throw the whole series in the trash 🚮

I disagree with the "they completely changed her" narrative. She was always super skinny, she always had the long legs. All they did was take her braces off, which is realistic, gave her contact lenses, and grew out her hair. Everything else is just confidence. Her braces came off, her body began to mature, and she started feeling more confident. So she started dressing in a way that reflected her newfound confidence, which isn't all that suggestive, honestly. It's just shorts and a small amount of belly showing. She's not nearly as scandalous as you're making it sound. Yeah, they could have kept the glasses, but they didn't really do anything too outrageous with her. It's a super realistic change.

I actually really like how I look with my glasses when I need to use them (stylish lenses DO exist) but they always insist on using the large awkward square frames or something similarly unattractive looking.

I like Zoey's original design better, yes her glow up is pretty, but it doesn't have much character other than that. Plus, they barely even made Zoey look like a prettier version of version of herself, she looks like a completely different character.

I was seeing clips of proud family on tiktok n was thinking of watching it, then I saw clips from the episode where the guy likes Zoey and it really turned me off of the show cuz all her 'friends' were bullying her

They could have done both tbh. One that she does as casual wear but the other for special events like weddings. The girls could be surprised by the glowup and ask why she doesn't do it all the time. She could then explain that she likes her og look and didn't feel the need to change that. But that sometimes she still likes to dress like that for fun.
