A lovely chap, Dave Allen. As funny as they come and a huge contributor to good Anglo-Irish relations. Always hilarious while never condescending, vicious, or smutty. Bless his clever cotton socks.

I think that today no one would understand this joke for the lack of Education

Don't underestimate people. Looking down on "kids today" is no better than looking down on Irish Labourers. Isn't that the point of the joke?
@lamnag012 жыл бұрын
@@originalveghead I don't think Walter was looking down on anybody but just stating an obvious fact and that is that we are been intentionally been dumbed down.

@@lamnag01 "we are been intentionally been dumbed down." I would have said "speak for yourself", but you already are.

@@originalvegheadI completely agree with your sentiment, but having been increasingly dismissed with "ok Boomer" and "educate yourself" in what I thought online debates, I'd say the "looking down on" sentiment runs in both generational directions. Additionally, I've noticed also that over the last decade and without fanfare, "ageism" appears to have been dropped from the list of groups, in establishment policies, that must not discriminated against......and that's the result of those now at the helm (speaking as a retiree). Honestly, check it out. Things aren't as progressive as they're being made out.
@originalveghead2 жыл бұрын
@@ratusbagus I agree it's a problem in both directions but AFAIK age is still a protected category. In the US it's pretty strictly enforced, but I don't know about the UK.

Being of Irish parentage after they moved to the Eastend of London and before retiring back to Donegal, I've lifelong experience of these language differences. So being an Irish raised cockney, I don't know if this is more, or if it's less funnier to me than to the just English or just Irish, having been neither. The non-Irish may have to read that twice. But if an Englishman ever called me an Irishman, the implication mightn't be complementary.....whereas if my father called me an Englishman it was definate and delivered as or with a kick in the arse. To my family, and probably Dave Allen, the joke was the irony of English jokes about Irish stupidity.

Dave Allen and Ken Dodd were masters of their profession. They were never rude, or insulting, towards their audience. Ken told us once that it’s the audience who pays his wages! 😂

The subtitles helped immensely. I initially heard "gorilla". And as an American I love Mr. Allen. I grew up watching him on PBS after Monty Python's Flying Circus aired. It was some of the first "adult humor" I was permitted to view.
