Ireland's National Broadcaster RTE placed a blanket ban on all Allen's TV work at the behest of the Catholic church which was the real power in Ireland up to the 90's. They even threatened him with excommunication but stopped short of actually doing it as they believe it would just be more ammunition for his act. His show ran for 14 years on BBC and was resurrected by ITV in 1993. He was a real comedy pioneer, a self confessed atheist and a gentleman.

Dave Allen is a legend. He was one of the first comedians in the UK and Ireland who didn't rely on structured jokes. He instead focused on the absurdity of very day life (and death). This was quite revolutionary at the time for punchline driven comedy over here.

@applecorp
@applecorp 5 жыл бұрын
@@markmckinney6129 It really was revolutionary, although I was only a young lad in the late 70's I still loved his style and manner, he was pretty mesmerising for me and I just loved the way he spoke, maybe Irish was a rare voice for me to hear back then. (Birmingham, England). But he continued and I grew older and I understood his comedy more, a real comedy legend. Sadly what passes as "comedy" these days is very much far removed from what I would call funny.
@markmckinney6129
@markmckinney6129 5 жыл бұрын
@@applecorp You'll probably be well aware of what was considered the comedy norm back then. Mostly crude jokes (often venturing into straight up prejudice) which rely on cheap punchlines, and aimed at the sort of people who piss themselves laughing if they hear a rude word. I can only imagine what a breath of fresh air Dave Allen was in the 70's. I remember watching him on telly with my parents in the 80's, and even at a young age, I totally got it.

Life is far too serious and PC correct nowadays 🤣😂🤣😂🙏🏻💚🇮🇪 “Into the hole he goes” reminds me of when we were kids and we used to say The Angelus, I used to think it was “....your Son by the “messing” of an Angel” and not “message” 😳 Luckily my mammy had a sense of humour 🙏🏻🕯

Dave Allen was best known for his brilliant and biting satire, but he was a great humanitarian who worked to improve the lives of the under-privileged. The 70's were a more settled and optimistic time in the UK. Dave Allen came from the Irish Republic where the Catholic church reigned supreme and was pervasive. The predominant religion in the UK was the Protestant Church of England which was established and confident but was worn lightly as a social convention and was not unduly demanding of its congregation. Just be nice and go to church sometimes was the prevailing rule. Dave Allen was seen as amusing, occasionally went to far, but was not a major threat. More threatening nowadays is the fusion of religion and right wing politics, especially in the USA. It would seem that their quest is to establish a state based upon the 10 commandments rather like the Islamacists want a Sharia based state. The world has never been more in need of Dave Allen and his contemporary travellers.

During the 80s there was a long series of programmes on British TV called, “An Audience With...” where funny public figures would deliver tales and anecdotes to an audience full of celebrities. You can see a lot of these on KZbin with people like Peter Ustinov or Kenneth Williams. The crowd would often rightly be roaring with laughter and the cameras would be taking reaction shots of famous people having a great time. Dave Allen would often be in the audience too and whenever he was filmed you never saw so much as a titter or grin from the man: he was always stock still with a serious expression studying, studying, studying the line and the reaction. He was a consummate professional and a true master of his craft.

Oh, I grew up watching Dave Allen. His TV show trademark was sitting on a stool wearing a beautifully cut suit, with a glass of whisky at his side. He was only 62 when he died. Such a lovely man, so loved & sadly missed.

That is the best Adam and Eve bit ever, Ricky Gervais has a good one but Dave Allen's pause when God introduces women to the equation is comedic gold!!!!

Can't believe i'm watching a young American reacting to Dave Allen. This man started my love for stand up as a kid watching his tv shows in the 80s!

If you look up Dave Allen, look up "Dave Allen At Large". That was the name of his original show. I used to watch it as a teen on PBS. Even then it was repeats. (I'm 52.) So he was probably more of a '60s comedian. Also notice that the first 2 knuckles on his left hand are missing. You now cannot unsee it. :D

@@verbalkint98 He actually made a joke one time, because he was always sitting in his chair drinking scotch while he did his monologue. He said that he dipped it into the glass so long that it rotted off! And, CHEERS!

Dave Allen never told anyone how he lost that finger tip. Not even his kids! He used to make up different ridiculous stories about it instead. 😀

@@samanthanickson6478 Do you remember tv sets with two dials, and the bottom one had "U" marked so that you could change the UHF channels on the top one? Does anyone remember black and white TV?

webfox1 Very well indeed, I was about 8 when we had our first (405 lines) B&W TV. I also remember our first colour TV, I sat and watched golf for about an hour, and I have no interest in golf at all! I was about 15.

Dave Allen's first major success was in Australia where he had his own TV show in 1963/64. (He would have been 27) I remember watching him at the time. He was extremely popular. After this success he returned to the UK and being a man with great talent his success continued with more TV shows etc for many years.
