I have told this same, exact joke about starving children in Africa (or anywhere) in regard to "manifesting" sh*t to many people, entirely unaware that Dave used the same theme in his stand up. I am SO glad I'm the only one calling out this incredible New Age Bullsh*t. Unbelievably, when I've levied this reasoning with some of my more militant New Age friends, they've counter argued that these starving children must have "manifested" the desire to experience starvation before birth! O.k, which is it people, can you change your mind about what you want to experience once you're alive through more "manifesting," or are you experiencing what your spirit "chose" to experience before birth (karma)--because the two ideas seem pretty mutually exclusive.
@jeremymacdonald55848 жыл бұрын
I agree that the way that the secret is presented is bullshit, and I think dave's take on it is hilarious. But I think there's something deeper to it than desires. Keeping a positive attitude isn't magical, but it's an undeniably important thing to do in life.
@justinpettit34326 жыл бұрын
Gillian G They're stupid if they think anyone "chose before birth" but that doesn't mean the law of attraction doesn't exist. This is just an example of extremists. The law of attraction is real. I see it in life all the time. It isn't that you just magically get things by using a law of attraction. But if u want to get things you desire or get out of a situation than you have to get in a state where you can attract those things in your life. For instance if u continue to say you're "broke" or you'll "always be broke" do you think you will make money? Probably not. Works on the same level with anything else. If u don't have the belief something will happen or don't attract the right energy that's attracted to it than it won't happen. Some people take this whole concept to the extreme which is problematic. But there's also a lot people can learn through law of attraction and similar concepts if they didn't easily dismiss it.

You guys want to know how 'the secret' works? The idea behind it is basically that by visualizing your goals you are more likely to subconsciously take action to achieving those goals. Obviously money isn't going to just appear in your bank as food won't just appear in Africa but the idea is that in this busy life full of distractions, the main thing that stops people from reaching their goals is that they don't stay focused. Constant projection in your mind keeps you focused. But you still need to take action to make things happen. So it works but not it the magical way it sounds.
@lancerd49349 жыл бұрын
No, it works because the author grew up as a pretty white girl in a first world country and they can basically get whatever they want by the "ask, believe, receive" method because they're pretty white girls, if that's how they choose to play it.
@asare2409 жыл бұрын
So what you're saying is live life, and good things might happen to you. Wow, what a revelation! Better write that down and sell it for $15.99 a pop.
@OhPhilly9 жыл бұрын
***** Correction - Live life, stay focused on your goals, ignore distractions, stay focused on your goals, take the time to train and learn new skills, stay focused on your goals.. I repeated that twice because that's how much focus you need to have to get anywhere these days. The workforce doesn't want entrepreneurs, they want people who keep their heads down and work. It takes goal setting, determination, commitment and FOCUS to get where you want to be regardless of the industry. If you don't like the sound of that? Stay a worker!

I think it might be because they know that the camera is going to show them. People feel more inhibited when they are exposed. If you watch Louis CK's stand ups, the lights are always off on the audience, it's completely dark, so you get more out of them because they're comfortably anonymous. Think of any stand up that you thought went really good where you could clearly see the audience, it makes sense to think that if the lights were off during those shows, there would be even more laughter.

Keeping a positive mindset does help you (in some situations). If you want something positive to happen to you its not going to happen if all you do is moan and complain about it. You have to be positive and work hard for it. Obviously it's not going to help people like the starving kids in Africa. But it does help in a lot of other situations in life, like trying to be successful. For example in sports and running, you have to believe you are the best and keep telling yourself that you can do it. Telling yourself that you are going to get first place. If you keep telling yourself. "I can't do it, I'm to weak." you're usually right.

Blair Burns It was a joke but he actually had that opinion. And i did find it funny, i was just saying
@jayare27448 жыл бұрын
His point was that merely not-moaning, merely thinking this-or-that, isn't enough. If you're in a million dollar lawsuit, you have to have more than childish tips about keeping your 'chin up,' you must master things like incentive-systems and litigative wisdom. That's what he was really saying: the secret is foolish because it's crude and compensatory, as you said, 'not going to happen if all you do is moan and complain' means it's only relevant to people prone to irrational patterned thought, not someone like Dave who was relatively rational but being manipulated by professional compliance experts at Comedy Central. Someone like him being told weak insights by people who have no idea, was the joke: 'turn that frown upside down' and 'visualize it and it'll happen' doesn't suffice at all for a rational celebrity who's really dealing with things like stalkers, blackmail, copyright disputes, power struggles, and so much more where pat answers are useless.

its a joke.

MrMvpron22 sometimes it's a cop-out to just say "it's a joke." Dave was making a point. Humor doesn't mean we ignore points. If someone says 'I farted in Oprah's mouth this morning,' that's one thing. Dave wasn't saying that.

It's not about thinking positive thoughts around starvation, far from it. As a practitioner of The Secret, I can tell you that you're not doing yourself a favor that way. The actual way to do it is to express gratitude for the good things that you DO have and let yourself be awash in the positive feelings that come of it. In all honesty, the people who use the 'starving children in Africa' argument against The Secret make gross generalizations about the people in that region. It's true that the majority of them are engrossed by poverty, famine and the depression that's a byproduct of both, but some tribes actually find the good in the surroundings and resources they have and are arguably some the happiest human beings on Earth

The Secret is pseudo-science quackery. It's all based around mental tricks meant to play with your sense of affirmation.

Let me tell YOU a secret, which you clearly haven't had the experience to have deduced yourself: to a truly, biologically unhappy person, merely imagining positive things will NOT produce positive feelings. Actually, it can lead to the opposite effect: when you're facing an all-encompassing despair, the good things in your life make you feel effectively nothing, and thinking about them is often all the more painful for that reason--leading to an even worse state of mind. My point being that The Secret only works for people who are already happy enough to use it, which makes it perfectly and elegantly useless. Furthermore, there are countless other ways to improve your mental well-being, and it takes many of them working in tandem to bring someone back from real unhappiness. Your belief is impossibly, laughably weak, and you should be embarrassed by it.

I mean, if you're already happy, you'll feel good about the good things in your life regardless of what the silly book tells you, Christ.

I get the overall message of the secret but it definitely only applies to people who aren't too bad off. Positive thinking is healthy for everyone. But if you're walking around surly, pissed off at everything in you life and being a pessimistic downer to everyone then of course you're going to hate the secret.

diypictures True! Something the secret doesn't really talk about that it should is the value of being down, but that doesn't sell books. How can you tell someone they want to be depressed? It doesn't ever go well. Therefore they won't be able to transition. Nor should they as they need to process the 'negative', which is often how law of attraction or 'the secret' is seen as, some kind of delivery system out of their current situation, which it won't ever be.

I think that book came out just a year or two before the housing crisis. No one's mentioned it since, and now 51% of Americans earn less than $30,000 a year. And this is in a "recovery".
