Yes very useful, I learned that in boy scouts a couple decades ago. You can do a similar thing with a t-shirt where you twist off the arm holes while still wearing it and inflate it with your breath. I found the pants method better but you make do with what you have.

Fun fact: Coconut water is slightly diuretic, so it'll slowly dehydrate you over time. You might get an extra day or two with them, but you can't live off of it.
