Dave Davies of The Kinks recently spent a few days here at the NYC Gibson Brands Showroom in Hell's Kitchen. Check out this video where he not only talks about the band and his brother but why he played a Flying V on TV that famous night. Also Jimmy Vivino makes a cameo to find out if others stories are true or a myth.

Been a Kinks fan since 1964 when I was 15, and Dave Davies was and is one of the greatest rock guitarist of all-time. The first time I heard, "You Really Got Me", it just blew me away! Yes, he really got me with those guitar licks! I liked many of the bands from "The British Invasion", but the Kinks were ahead of their time. They were BAD ASS!!!!

It's surprising how a lot of youngsters (to me anyone in their 30s or younger) never heard of the Kinks. But when I mention or hum "You really got me", "All day and all of the night", and "Lola" everyone is familiar with them. Love the band and Dave is such an exceptional guitarist.

I dont think there can be any argument. Look at the genres of music they inflenced. Heavy Rock/Metal is well known to have been influenced by Dave. But you also have Psychodelic rock, then Prog rock. You have the Madchester movement, Oasis would never have existed without the Kinks. The simplicity of a lot of the Kinks tracks had an influence on Punk rock.
@tyrssen1

Interview must have been after his heart attack. He is recovering well. So humble here, compared to early days. Dave was always coming up with great new guitar tones. Whether rhythm or lead playing, wonderful. Electric and acoustic, great. I enjoyed reading his book. Being a family man, raising children has calmed Dave down. Such a wonderful body of work. I liked his songs and his backup harmony singing. So creative. All the best to Dave.

Mr. Davies was one of my first guitar heroes in my very early teens! I remember renting the One From the Road video over & over, having all my neighborhood buddies over, and wearing that sucker out! Then I bought the vinyl and did the same thing. The Kinks are so unfairly forgotten or unappreciated, one of the most influential R&R bands of all time. I suppose they were somewhat lost in the shuffle of the Who, RS, Beatles, but should be considered to be of the same class, or nearly so.

He stumbled onto that Gibson totally per chance when his Gretsch disappeared in flight. A deep irony behind the story is how much of an impact the Kinks had on hard rock and how instruments like the Flying V have since been embraced by hard rockers and metalheads.
@AnthonyMonaghan
@AnthonyMonaghan 4 жыл бұрын
I'm going to dive in headfirst and suggest that the reason Hendrix owned a Flying V is because Dave played one. Hendrix was enamoured of Davies guitar sound and playing on the early Kinks singles. Dave's dandyish image is also very similar to Hendrix's 'English look' with the military jackets and the ruffled shirts. Just a theory. Dave was a a force of nature in the early to mid sixties, impossible to ignore with a completely unique sound and style. A proper icon.

Perhaps she thought i was directing that towards her. She was rather rotund at the time (respectfully speaking). I suppose that's what memories are made of. Happy Heavenly Mother's Day Mom! Dave has mellowed out. Like most men, his wiener got him into a lot of challenging circumstances. Dave is a great guitarist. Wether playing electric, or acoustic, he was always giving us new tones and his rhythm playing is superb also. Ray wrote great songs with interesting words. I wish Dave had gotten along better with drummer Mick Avory, a loyal bandmate and good friend of Ray. I appreciate the Kastoff Kinks, love their playing the old tunes still. Ray vocals, Dave guitar and high harmony, Mick quirky drumming, a number of solid bass players, together made that unique Kinky sound. What a productive, wonderful catalogue they have given us to enjoy!

A guitarist, transitioned to bass. Pete was an old friend. I did not know about him being screwed out of royalties. In Dave’s book, he speaks of most of the money going to Ray, due to the song writing credits. But, those ‘60s bands all had terrible contracts and did not hold their publishing rights. Dave did much in shaping the sound and some writing he did not get credit for. Dave had Mick set aside for the new drummer, who Dave said was a hard rocker. Still a devoted friend, Mick continues to work for them in the studio they own. Dave and Ray always spoke of Pete with affection. Pete probably was a steady peace maker within the group.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were the top of the heap of English rock and roll bands in the 60s. But I would argue that The Kinks and The Who were far more influential long-term. Dave Davies brought us a hard rock, grungy guitar tone that was brand new and some killer bar chords behind them. A biting, nasty tone that introduced itself to all the bands that came after. The Who taught us how to rock stadiums and festivals. Screaming fans drown out 15-watt stage amps, but they don't drown out stacks of Marshalls. Although the Beatles and the Stones had more hits, The Kinks and The Who taught future bands how to rock hard. With a fair number of hits themselves!
