The salt and pepper shakers actually confused me when first moving to Britain, everywhere in the world I had been before the salt was the one with several holes and the pepper the one with only one hole. Apparently it is due to historicaly pepper being more expensive. Found this in wikipedia: The number of holes varies by culture, health and taste. In Europe where pepper was historically a rare spice, pepper is stored in the shaker with the fewer holes. In the UK, salt was often poured onto the side of one's plate and used for dipping, rather than shaken across the whole dish, hence salt cellars having a single, larger, hole.
@DKDexter999 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, when they yelled that out I was perplexed as well; here in Denmark it's 1 hole = pepper, many holes = salt. I was as a child explained that it was due to the need; you need more salt on your food than pepper.

The reason salt shakers should only have one hole is actually because, historically, you would pour a small pile of salt onto the side of your plate to dip your food into. One question. Does this friend of yours come from Holland? Because I can guarantee to you that wherever you go in the Netherlands you'll find salt goes in the shaker with lots of holes in the top, and pepper in the one that has only three or sometimes even one hole. In fact you being so adamant about it definitely having to be the other way around is the first time in my life this has been even a question I've thought about. The salt goes in the shaker with many holes, because you usually want quite a bit of salt. The pepper goes in the shaker with few holes, so you don't accidentally ruin your food by shaking way too much pepper over it rendering it inedible. Anything other feels and sounds ridiculous to me.
