For years, Dave Johnston trained alongside Mike Winklejohn, who later founded the famed Jackson-Wink MMA gym in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when they were both World Champion fighters in the early and mid 1980's. (This is where UFC Champ Jon Jones has trained for the last 12 years.) Winkeljohn was also an amazing fighter, but a kick to the face in practice in 1986 put his right eye out, so he decided to turn to coaching.

Stances as in being able to fight with either left or right leg in the front. If I remember correctly he was born left handed and possibly had his arm tied behind his back as a child and became ambidextrous and he taught many the value of being able to fluidly change from “normal” to “south paw”. Idk, I was a kid and my favorite part was when we used markers as knives to see if we would have been actually stabbed or not! Great dude.

My brother was a good friend of Dave’s when he was living in the San Fernando Valley in California. He brought Dave over to my house one day. He was showing me how to get more power out of my side kicks and spinning back kicks. I had an arm held kicking pad that you hold against your body. I felt his power and no joke I’ve never felt anyone kick as hard as him. I couldn’t imagine getting hit with that spinning back kick it would have folded me like a piece of paper.

Thank you so much for the channel! Full contact karate/American kickboxing is still my favorite sport- we trained in that sport when I was young and I still train its techniques. It's a beautiful style. I don't like Muay Thai- looks ugly to me. Yes it is effective, but besides effectiveness I like to choose the style that also looks good. And I'm strongly believe that good kickboxers using TKD and Karate techniques can defeat Muay Thai fighters
@sorenpx Жыл бұрын
It's a real shame that kickboxing died in popularity in the US and that the full-contact ruleset went with it. It's basically impossible to find pro matches under these rules anymore.

@@sorenpx100% agree! Still glad to know that there are people who share my feelings❤
@sorenpx Жыл бұрын
@@ChechenAbrek101 Indeed. I was young enough in the 80s and early 90s that I only vaguely remember the kickboxing scene at the time but I remember enough to feel nostalgic for it. And I've spent a fair amount of time as an adult going back and researching the history and watching matches. The mid-70s through early 90s was a great time for American martial arts.
