Known by his Wingtip shoes and Goodyear hat, Dave Marcis moved down to Asheville NC from his home in Wisconsin in 1969 to pursue the dream in NASCAR racing. Today we ride with Dave over to the brick building his race cars called home for almost 20 years for his first time back inside since 1987! After that we head over to the shop he built in 87 and used until retirement in 2002. Inside he has many relics of the past including Chrysler Hemi parts, raced used RCR Dale Earnhardt parts, and untouched Chevy SB2 race engines from 2002!

Dave Marcis was a good friend of Dale Earnhardt's and Richard Childress and he would often test for Dale and even get in some cars before Dale even hit the racetrack in them, he even tested the winning Daytona 500 car for RCR. In exchange they would give him parts and sometimes even a car to race. Dave even had Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet as a sponsor for a race. Dave Marcis also got Kerry Earnhardt to make his Cup debut so Dale would be able to race his sons in Michigan. Dave is 82 but he knows more about race cars than anybody.

He got more out of a little than any driver i ever knew. He'd show up at the races sometimes and had to ask for volunteer crew and still would manage a top 10. I grew up in Hendersonville, NC and remember going to his shop to say hello and my father who built his drive shafts at IMS Asheville would re supply him and we would all get a cheeseburger cross the street. Always spent time to talk with me. A living legend who will always be remembered as a tireless worker who was a perfectionist, he had to be just to keep up and pay for the racing. Great man indeed!

This man is a true legend! One of the last independent drivers who could do it all on his own cars. As a 16 year old me and my buddy had a chance to meet him and get his autograph numerous times..but one of the best memories was talking with Dave on a Friday in between qualifying..we found him sitting at his hauler eating a baloney sandwich and a coke soda. He finished 4th that year at Riverside International Raceway January 1975.. in his bad ass Dodge. He was absolutely a gentleman and made us young teenagers feel very special. Just a down to earth guy. I'll never forget how he treated us especially since we weren't even allowed in the pits..but back then it was quite easy to sneak in.

There needs to be more stories about people like Dave, no matter what they kept on doing what they loved to do - race cars. The younger generation has no idea the kind of drive and determination it took in those days just to be able to get to the track never mind work on the car and win. They only had their expertise learned by trial and error, you can't go to school and learn that. Keep these kind on interviews happening before all these legends are truly gone.

There was a tire shop in Asheville that Dave use to get tires from through Goodyear. The owner was a family friend that my dad would do mechanic work for. One day in the early 2000’s Dave came through there while I was there and gave the owner pallets of Gatorade. Dave and the owner were good hunting buddies, and would regularly go back to Wisconsin on hunting trips. I got to talking to Dave and the owner (I was maybe 12) and they took me rabbit hunting in Asheville. Fast forward to 2021 and I was at a bojangles at 630 AM to get breakfast in Asheville before work, and I had seen Dave eating by himself. I stop and said something, and he remembered me. Out of all the old racers I’ve come to meet, he was always to most humble.

Dave could confirm this, but according to my memory, there was a factory nearby (Custom Packaging) that Dave approached for help with storing a car that they were testing for Dale. Also, I believe the plant manager who was in my family let them use space in the back of the plant to do promo photos for the Olive Garden car. I still have the promo card that Dave gave my family as a thank you.

Mitchell - this is a great video! I never knew that the building on Brevard road have been Mr. Marcis' shop. I am an automotive historian in Asheville and work at the Estes-Winn Car Museum here in Asheville. Dave Marcis is a true racer and a good example of never give up doing what you love. He worked just as hard as the top names in the sport while being an independent team owner/driver. One of my favorite underdogs and it was pretty cool to see him lead a lap in the 2000 Winston 500 at Talladega. He put the #71 Chevy out front early in the race under green. I remember during the tire wars there was a a shortage of tires became an issue during a race - NASCAR was confiscating tires from teams who were out of the race - Dave Marcus was sitting on top of a stack of tires smoking a cigarette - ESPN interviewed him and Dave said "these tires are mine - I bought these and I'm giving them to Earnhardt - " It was awesome -

I'm from Mt. Olive NC, and 73 years old. I still watch NASCAR, enjoyed many races watching Dave Marcis . The independents used to put on a good show fighting to gain a few spots in the middle of the pack and he was one of my favorites. In 1998 or 99 l was planning on going to Daytona the following year and I had a Marcis flag made from a lady who used to work for a company in Albermale NC who had moved to Mt. Olive. I got her to make one of him sitting in his car. I had her to embroider a pair of WINGTIPS next to the bottom of the drivers seat and he was sitting in the # 71 car. Unfortunately l had health problems and haven't been able to get back to a NASCAR race since then, but l still have his flag. Kept it in storage and it still looks like new. Always admired Dave and J D McDuffie from Sanford,NC. Wish I could have gotten to Daytona back then so l could have shown my flag off. It is a one of a kind. Since then I haven't been able to go back to a NASCAR race but I did enjoy them. Nothing and I mean absolutely nothing like being in person sitting on Chicken Bone Row when those drivers fire up and come flying by you. I still remember the smell of the burning rubber and the noise from the engines. Sweet music ❤

I am 61 and LOVE your history lessons. I am from a road racing and short track background. My Dads toy in the 80's was a street legal can am car that is now vintage raced. It was a nice car and still is. I got some pics off of the internet and it is still really nice.

Mr. Marcis got the most out of what he had. Truly a remarkable person and I can only hope to be as spry and sharp as he is when I reach his age. Thanks for shooting this video, such history and you even uncovered those awesome IROC wheels and that distributor! And to think that Dave is only 22 years removed from his last Daytona 500 in 2002, plus the fact that his career spanned over five decades. Wow!

You are absolutely correct Mitch, Dave is an awesome human being. Got to meet him while at Wilksboro for a Late Model Stock Race companion to the Cup Race in 1990. Met him at the hotel one evening, he was in the room above ours. He had to make some corrections for some drunk shenanigans just outside our hotel door. Funny how a full beer landing on one’s head seems to ring one’s bell enough to detour said shenanigans, but he didn’t mind dropping a few off the balcony to help them dunk,folks make a decision to move on somewhere else. First time we ever got to meet Dave…..wouldn’t have had it any other way 😂😉…..phenomenal human being……just good down to earth man & hell of a racer.❤

Guys like Dave Marcis were the heart and soul of Nascar, they put it on the map. It is what America was all about. I knew Tommy Hinnershitz, I live near Reading PA. and went to races at the Reading Fairgrounds. There was another driver that raced there Buzzie Reutiman father of David Reutiman, he raced there. The glory days.

Out of all the Greats of Nascar past, Mr Marcis is by far at the top. Longevity and nobody really had much negative to say about him, goes a long way in my book.
