They have it in their heads that he is actually someone important in the industry and that his opinion means something. This is why AEW is full of marks who care more about getting 5 stars than anything else. The fact is that Meltzer is a joke. He pretends to have some in depth thought out system for grading matches but it's all for show. Especially now. The only reason the Young Cucks ever got a 5 star match is because they are his friends and kiss his ass. He's so desperate to actually be part of the business that he'll push they and their friends God awful matches as the best of the best because they are the only ones who really give a crap about his star ratings. No one from the previous generations gave two shots about Meltzer or the other dirt sheet writers.

It's also clear the guy is biased, so what he says really shouldn't hold any weight. If you care about star ratings as a wrestler, you're definitely in the wrong business. He's nothing more than a critic, but there's people who will take his word as gospel regardless.

I disagree with Dave's reasoning because I've heard this same line of thought used for people when selecting someone to a pro sports hall of fame. They say "if I have to think about it, the answer is no" but sometimes things require a little thought and aren't so obvious. I would say if you spend a long time thinking about it, the answer is probably no, but any thought? That's unfair.

I genuinely don't mind that someone, whether it's Dave or not, didn't think that a certain match deserved five stars. People hate on Dave for having his own star system and a particular taste in professional wrestling. WWE to a large extent rarely offers the kind of wrestling that Dave loves, I realized that at least two years (I only got introduced to him during the COVID days). If you give a rating for every single match out there, odds are people who follow you will start to find some holes in your logic. For example, here Dave mentions predictability as a reason why Undertake vs Shawn not getting five stars, yet very recently he gave Cody vs AJ five stars although that match was way more predictable. Is he a hypocrite? Not necessarily, it's very difficult to give a rating for everything that goes on in wrestling. Long story short, people who hate his ratings system are better off just not caring about it, yet they comment and interact with everything related to that system. Side note: I also hated the firefly funhouse match.

This was when I started losing respect for Dave. But you can't tell me that rating was based on the people. Because a lot of people believe that is the best match of all time. I am one of them. But then he started giving AEW matches 6 or 7 stars. It made no sense. I get he has his favorites. But that's just his opinion. It is not the opinion of the people. And when you are giving 7 stars then 4.5 matches are not that special. And I always thought the ratings was based on the fans not just him. So I lost interest in his observer. I listen to Jim Cornette now. Although I don't agree with Jim on politics.
