I really liked how he kept up kayfabe in the real world as a greedy grifter. Especially that time he committed welfare fraud and DiBiase's ministry received more than $2.1 million in welfare funds from the state of Mississippi after his son, Brett, was hired as deputy administrator of the state's Department of Human Services.

Disagree. Different time. WWF's MO at the time was keeping their face champs looking strong, and admittedly, that worked for them. I think people say this too often about wrestlers who main evented but never held the world title, and more often than not, I'd ask why? The allure of the world title is supposed to be that it's incredibly difficult to win, plus certain wrestlers were over enough w/o the title and didn't need it (e.g. Andre the Giant). In DiBiase's case in particular the failure to win the title was essential to the gimmick. Whole point was, all the money in the world can't get you the one thing you covet more than anything else.

It's so great how many Andre stories are about him farting. Larger than life. I met Ted at a convention a few years ago - it wasn't too crowded that afternoon, so he was nice enough to share many stories with me from his days in WWF. He was easily one of the friendliest former stars I have ever met. Amazing that he was such a great heel - I would argue one of the best ever in that role.

Some of those old mid south matches are legendary. There's this one with Dibiase and Flair where Dibiase gets a head injury and bleeds out about a gallon of blood all over the ring. It gets progressively more disturbing as the fight goes on and the blood just keeps on pouring and you're thinking "how much blood is there in a human body vs what's spread around on the floor there?"

The thing with the "flash cash" story is why would The Million Dollar Man pick up the restaurant check for anybody?
@HeywoodJablowme7Ай бұрын
Well at the time wrestlers were still pretending that they really were the people they portray on TV. So if he "really" was rich, he'd pay for people's food wouldn't he? No it's not a bad guy move but it is a move that legitimises that he is rich.
@jd9119Ай бұрын
@@HeywoodJablowme7 Being rich isn't his gimmick to. His gimmick is he's better than you, because he's got more money than you. Buying your dinner is what a nice guy does. Not what an evil heel that's willing to buy the WWF championship would do
@arthurmorgan7086Ай бұрын
Because it added to the gimmick. The work. When people watched and if someone said "this is fake. He's not really a millionaire". Someone else could say yes he is he paid for everyones meal in such a such restaurant. All a work and this was back before kayfabe. It was extremely important

Picking up my tab at a restaurant feels like a babyface move because that guy certainly wouldn't get heat from me.
@OikPoinFiveАй бұрын
yea i agree! but i think it was vince's idea to have MDM pay the tab for EVERYone in the restaurant so that many people all over america in restaurants will ask "who is that nice rich man who paid for EVERY ones tabs??!!"" the curiousity adds to his gimmick then. yet im confused - most of us fans from back then - at that time when MDM wrestled in WF from 1987 to 1993 - we did not know that wwf gave Teddy all this free expensive stuff! we just thought it was part of his fake gimmick. im sure wwf bragged about ted via their wwf magazine but most of us will just think it was fake money that ted carried around. if ted was arriving in a limo - that limo was probably for Vince and ted just happened to be there due to his gimmick. that is what i assumed.
