Underrated for a reason. Most Britt rockers are reserved and humble, and they don't want the limelight. EVH and Merican rockers want the limelight and the attention. Without Murray, there is no Maiden. Period.
@angusorvid8840 Жыл бұрын
I agree. Iommi and Glen Tipton are also great. I played in the L.A. metal scene in the 80s and it was all about shred. Yes, I could shred when I had to, but I wanted to focus more on the music. My tendency to focus on the music rather than the flash got me booted from a few bands. That scene burnt itself out, and it wasn't just because of grunge, as much as I like to throw grunge into the rubbish bin. I was more into traditional metal and classic rock/space rock, from UFO, Thin Lizzy, seventies era Scorpions and Priest, Sabbath and Maiden. That's my thing. As much as I loved Van Halen and admired Eddie for his innovation his ascendency was also the beginning of flash for flash's sake. Most of these hairbands were not anywhere near as good as Van Halen, most of them were terrible. The better bands in that scene were Y&T and Great White. They actually wrote great songs and kept the guitar solos in their place, not a bunch of hairbrained shredding. I'd say the peak of shred wankery was Racer X which came on the scene in '85. I saw them a dozen times from '86 to '88, just before they broke up and Paul Gilbert joined Mr. Big, Scott Travis replaced Dave Holland in Priest, Bruce Boulette and John Alderete joined The Scream then Mars Volta, and the front man, Jeff Martin, went back to drums and replaced Eric Singer in Badlands. Britain never had this kind of scene because it's out of character for them. It's an American thing to be a big, top dog, top gun showoff. And it gets real old, real fast.
@shambles7ful Жыл бұрын
@@angusorvid8840 That is some great insight into the difference of L.A and British metal of the 1980's. Must have been a fun time to be around and to be actually playing yourself, wow... I agree with you totally on the focus on the song as opposed to a bunch guys trying to out shred each other. I can't imagine how bad it all must have got Yngwie hit the scene after he joined Alcatrazz Guys trying to out do each other ! As Gary Moore stated when asked by a reporter ' do you ever compare yourself to other guitarists? Moore modestly replied "I could sit around all day and practise and get more technical than other guys but it's the kids in street I want to reach at the end of the day",, it was the song writing he focused on, in saying that Gary really was a once in a lifetime guitar player who was just so naturally gifted.

Awesome. Tremendously underrated. I felt that his amazing guitar work got overshadowed in the 80's Hard Rock/Metal era because of the likes of EVH, Steve Vai, Yngwie, George Lynch, Warren Demartini, Jake E Lee, Vivian Campbell, and many others that were center of attention at the time. Also, I think the success of Maiden as a Band and that they were a two guitar band is why you never saw Dave or Adrian winning any of the Guitar Polls that were judge by the fans. It's interesting that when you see polls judged by musicians or fans of say " Guitar World Magazine' you are likely to see players like Murray, Smith, as well as Tipton and Downing higher because they see the importance of then as an influence to Heavy Metal.
@Archer2500100377510 жыл бұрын
True. Guys in 2 guitar bands never seem to receive the recognition they deserve. They never seem to be seen in polls, fronted on magazines or earn names and monikers... having said that, I'd still put guys like DeMartini, Malmsteen, Jake E. Lee and Vai over Tipton, Downing, Murray and Smith, no matter how much I like the latter.
