The problem I see is that back in the old days there was a clear difference between Dave and Adrian. Even after telling someone that had never heard Maiden before or had no idea about guitar solos about the difference between Dave and Adrian they could spot the difference. Then Janick came along and started playing like a bad Dave impersonator. When you listen to Maiden albums now you can tell Adrian straight away because Adrian is Adrian, but when it comes to the other solos you can't tell if it's Janick playing good or Dave playing bad. Janick's widdly shits all over Dave's widdly.

Dave Murray is my favorite. He’s more of a shredder and tends to play lead a bit more. Also more material of his to sift through (he played alongside Smith and Gers separately before they both joined the band, and he’s also played on every album)

All three are great, but I choose Adrian. Dave Murray can play great and use wonderful legato, but Adrian Smith's vibrato, note selection, bends, and phrasing are the reasons I choose Smith. Dave and Janick can do great bends and phrasing, but I think Smith's compositions appeal more to me. Check out Flight of Icarus, Wasted Years, Can I Play With Madness, Stranger In A Strange Land, or a few more.

this is my opinion, sadly I'm not a guitar player... Dave is the best on fast solos...his technique is amazing... Adrian is a great guitar player with a different style and also a good songwriter... Janick is a great songwriter, he's the more melodic of three, on fast solos is not so clean but he plays many great riffs/solos on slow song... Then, I love this three guitars sound...

I prefer Dave. He is the reason why I picked up a guitar. His sound is so creamy , nobody has that sound in heavy metal. And that legato style is always there with him. Really fluent and effortless playing. When someone thinks of Maiden´s guitar tone they think of Dave. And yeah Dave and Adrian are the best dual guitar attackers in history.

Dude! This guy got those three very distinctive styles down to a science. I always have a weakness for Dave's solos despite often being the simplest of the three, I love how he shamelessly uses minor pentatonics scales most of the time giving Iron Maiden that unique border of hard rock and metal -- as sort of a gateway drug to hardcore heavy metal. All three of these guitarists are really wonderful and talented blokes.

Adrian could play *almost* as fast as Dave. If Dave is a 9 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of speed, Adrian is an 8.75, but he picked his spots when to shred so when he did, you sat up and took more notice of it. Janick has been frustrating to me to listen to, because while he is very good at playing melodies, his "wall of notes" soloing style always bothered me a little. I was pleasantly surprised when his soloing was a lot more melodic on the Fear of the Dark album. I remember both my best friend and I noticed that when that album came out.

Chaos is a great way of describing Janick. Dave is the sound of Maiden but his appeal is a mixture of great tone and shred. Adrian is the complete package. It was Adrian that took the the band to greater heights, he wrote most of the band's best songs. Dave clearly has more skill and technique but Adrian puts more emotion into his playing which i personally prefer

IMO, proof is in the pudding, and it's no knock on Dave or Jan. Glad they kept Jan when Adrian returned. But all the focus is on Bruce coming back in 2000.... and everyone seems to overlook Adrian's return and impact, to the tone and songwriting itself. Look at the albums Adrian played and contributed on. Killers-7th Son, then Brave New World to present. Notably conspicuous? No Prayer, FotD, Xfactor and Virtual. And the funny thing is, IMO, Xfactor and Virtual XI are better albums as a whole, than No Prayer or FotD (there is like, 2 decent keeper tunes from those two albums, and IMO , FotD is the most overrated album Maiden ever penned)... But While Bruce was absent for the latter 2, Adrian was gone for all 4, and IMO, it shows, big time, in the quality of songwriting and general guitar tone. Some fans don't like the newer Maiden albums, but to my ear, they are the natural progression from the more Prog influenced feel of Somewhere in Time and 7th Son, so even when you remove Bruce from the fold, for X Factor and Virtual XI, those albums overall have more in common with Maidens post 2000 stuff, structurally, and makes a lot of sense it would appeal to Adrian, whereas the retreading of old stuff from No Prayer would not have. Fortunately, they have enough epic room to go from a power duo to trio.
