Hey guys, the original video was longer and contained more classic megadeth riffing but it got copyrighted so I had to remove some sections of the video. I’ll try and play those songs again maybe slightly off next time when I revisit this set-up in a Marty rack recreation.

Nice work! How would you say the CAE 3+ compares to the model in the Axe FX? I'd be curious if you could recreate the rig entirely I. The Axe FX. I think the biggest challenges would be getting the additional EQ section and the BBE replicated.

The axe fx gets close of course but the axe fx lacks the “in the room” aspect of the pre amp and power amp combo. The axe fx III excels at recreating what the pre amp sounds like recorded with a mic. Using the axe fx as the preamp and sending that into the the VHT and hearing the sound coming out of your cab is not really that similar to the real thing. The model in the axe fx is the CAE 3+ SE so it’s a bit different. John Suhr told me it’s creamer but pretty similar. The BBE doesn’t do much it’s just an eq effect that adds some low end and brightness to the tone.

12:40 - completely agree with these sentiments. I am in love with rack stuff but over the years as the stuff has gotten older it's been harder to keep it all maintained in the UK so I've sold most of it off. I only have a VHT 2/90/2 left now and my current setup is basically how I would approach a rack mounted setup (even being in a rack!) but with preamp pedals and the like. Just a bunch of frickin' drawers, pales in comparison to the sleek sexy look of a well build rackmount setup. I still get angry thinking about how guitarists would rather lug a head around (either loose or in a stupidly large/heavy custom case where the head itself doesn't even bolt in) and a separate FX rack and/or a huge pedalboard full of stuff that any random drunk could spill their drink over at a gig, over a neat and tidy rack where everything is safely at the back, prewired and ready to roll up and just turn on. Bring back the rack!

Yeah, rack is way better than pedals. Not a big pedal guy, they are kind of annoying especially because they always need batteries or a separate power supply. Rack is kind of back in a way because a lot of guys are using the axe fx and Kemper stuff so it's still alive and popular with actual touring musicians.

Tone is subjective. Some people love rack set-ups, some people hate them.

I think it was a combination of different things. It wasn’t a true studio album recorded all at once so probably Marshall stuff with maybe the CAE 3+ on some tracks.

Very nice... You should've played some Youthanasia riffs - I believe he used a CAE on that album too; Rust he used Bogner. I tried in the late '90s getting myself a CAE 3 preamp, even then they were quite hard to find; I wound up settling for a JMP-1, in which I think I might prefer overall. I think nowadays the vogue thing are the profile amps/programs. They take way less space and much cheaper on the wallet. Like you, I prefer getting the original equipment, but they are definitely getting harder to find...

I’ll play some youthanasia riffs when I revisit this rack set up in the future. The JMP-1 is a great pre amp, still pretty cheap if you can find one. The modern stuff is great but the real deal is always going to sound better and more be authentic to what it really sounds like in person.

@@Schush I have a Marshall 9100 power amp. JMP 1 sounds great with it. It has a voicing switch that when activated gives the pre amp a bit more gain and saturation. I'll make a video about it at some point.

It was Marshalls in the studio for Dave. Live (Rust in Peace Tour) it was the Bogner Triple Giant preamp through the 2150, same as Marty (Marty also used the Real Tube II for leads).
