Great advice, another divorce will be good for the country, stay in there and fight instead of taking the easy road. Chances are you will remarry and have the same or worse issue. Pray that God will work in her life! We started out the same way, I was immature, I did not want to budget, I wanted to buys toys, I was not ready to take responsibility, thank God after not having money when we really needed it, I grew to appreciate what Dave Ramsey teaches, we have been married 34 years and on the same page. Just want to provide some hope. There is a child involved here, you have to fight, it’s not easy.

We have been paying off debt, paid off 30k last year. 30k left to go. Our income is doubling but we have to move and get a second vehicle. I was cautioning her about getting in a bunch of vehicle debt. My wife made the Comment. "Everyone has debt". My rebuttal was, "There are two types of people with debt. Poor people and stupid people. Paid off over 100k since February! That's only 3 months!! We sold our truck, canceled a few 20$ subscriptions, started back on a budget, called to reduce our phone bill, and started looking at everything we don't really need. We went from -500/mo to +4000/mo. That's insane! It really is all of the little things that add up. Our truck payment was almost 1k/mo. It was new so insurance was high. The fuel was through the roof even though it got about 20mpg. Selling it and using the proceeds after payoff to buy a used 2015 Honda pilot with cash left is with a great vehicle with NO PAYMENT. We cut our fuel costs by 250/mo. Our insurance is about 100/ month cheaper. That's about 1300/mo we saved just by selling that truck. We also used about 5k left over after buying the Honda to pay off a credit card... that freed up that payment too! About 1500/mo total. I could have even bought a cheaper vehicle, but I do all of the maintenance around our house and on our cars and wanted to be able to keep up with it all since I definitely will not be paying anyone to do any maintenance until I'm debt free. Gotta keep it manageable. I'll have to replace the timing belt and components soon on the Honda, but I can do it myself so it's not that big of a deal.

My husband was the same way. He used to say “here we go with Dave Ramsey again” or “did you hear that during your Dave Ramsey cult meetings?”. 😂 My husband is a great guy so instead of making a big deal out of it, I kept our accounts separate for a little bit and dove deep into the Ramsey method. I lead by example and eventually he learned to respect it and came along. He still doesn’t say it was because of Dave though and still doesn’t admit that he follows Dave, but we all know he does. Lol

Pretty much all of this comment section is saying that. When you have one person who doesn't want to budge, it's up to the second person to figure something out to make it work. If they do try everything and it still doesn't work, then sure, get a divorce. But jumping right to divorce when you don't know the full story is silly and childish.

Marriage is all about compromise. Take my situation for example. My wife and I were in debt about $100,000. All of it was and still is student loans. My chunk was $20,000 and my wife’s was $80,000. She is fine with paying off the debt. She knows it needs to be done. She uses her whole check every month to do it. We live off of solely mine. Now, me being the hard headed finance minded guy that I am wants us to live off of only half my salary and have me and her both work non stop until the debt is paid off in a year. But, that’s not happening. My wife wants me home. She doesn’t want us both working all the time away from each other. She expects to live in a certain way. Not high status, not in a giant house, not buying whatever she wants whenever but she does want to live in a nice, safe place where basic essentials like plumbing and AC aren’t a problem . Where as I could live in a tin shack for $100 a month just to pay off the debt faster. My point is, marriage is a compromise. You take what you can get. Not everyone wants to be out of debt like those of us that listen to Dave Ramsey religiously and we have to take that truth and say “ok” I love this person enough where I will wait and pay off the debt in 3 years versus half a year. Opposites attract so most of us will be opposite when it comes to finances. Realize that and compromise. It is the only way to make your marriage work.

Totally with your wife here. When times were tough and we were working all the time, constantly separated was causing massive faults in our marriage. We started to slow down because we starting fighting and we were both getting depressed. We moved from our mold infested apartment to a good one. Not great, but I wasn't freezing in the winter or worried about my health anymore. Soon we started doing small rewards to keep us going. In the beginning, it was going out for ice cream every other week. Later, we celebrated paying off a major loan by going out for dinner. Nothing big, but a celebration. Today, we are much better off both financially and emotionally. Could we have hit our financial goals earlier? Sure, but I wanted time with my husband. Sometimes it was just having a beer on the back porch. He is worth everything to me and I would rather be poor and with him than wealthy and alone.

Yeah, there are deeper issues going on here than Dave Ramsay. I have never been married but I'm guessing getting on the same page money-wise before saying "I do" is vital. The fact she wouldn't even go to marriage counseling is another red flag. If she doesn't want to save their relationship then it sounds like she's looking for the door. They need help.

@@Lady.Luck. very true. Also people evolve over time and habits creep in that didn’t exist before. Also things magnify once you join your lives together. Money habits might not show up when your finances are separate but once joined you see everything that never used to. Sometimes people on here like to say “well you should have seen that before marriage..etc.”. Most of the time it’s not that simple. During dating, there’s lots of weighing what’s important and what you can live with and what is a dealbreaker. You do the best you can but you really never know until you’ve married.

Somepeople just don't like to be talked to about things that they may be perceived to not have done right. So they take the stance of you being judgemental, somepeople need to hit a wall hard enough to want to be open to change. It's sad that this guy realised this after the wife and kids now he has to ride it out with reason and compromise until she's willing to join equally with him on a process of their choosing to go forward. It might not be either dave or this guys fault just not her time yet

Traditional roll for women is taking care of the household. Proverbs 31. 10 onwards. She has staff to help keep the house in order and works to provide to the household. That doesn’t sound like a “slave” to me.

Let me guess, she's not used to being told no, was a spoiled child or has expensive tastes and likes showing off to her friends. And counselling is social suicide. Should of figured this out BEFORE marriage mate. 🙄🤦

The beginning of marriage can be an adjustment and can be rocky. Oftentimes couples work things out over time. My husband wasn’t initially onboard with getting vehicles paid off and savings up like I was, so I just focused on what I could control. I paid off my car and got savings up. He decided to quickly pay his off once he knew mine was paid off. Over time we began to do a better give and take and behaved more cohesively. Some marriages are like cooking in a crockpot In which it takes time to get it together.

When Dave said “you’re not going to make it,” it was a truth low blow. I think it was necessary to let him know something needs to be done or else I throw my hands up and walk away. I don’t like saying this, but some people are born for that road of perdition; sadly.

Not wanting to budget or follow the baby steps has nothing to do with Dave Ramsey himself. I don’t agree with every little thing Dave says. I’m not a Christian. Also, Dave and I probably vote differently. But I really don’t care about any of that. The people on this show give life-changing advice. You’d have to be a fool not to listen to these folks.

My wife almost never spends and while I do spend, I don't spend much. I am at the point where I wish my wife would spend some money. We have been dedicated all our lives and finally have enough wealth that we don't have to worry. We do go on two vacations a year... that must count for spending.

In the "BUDGET" you need a line item for discrepancy spending for her. If you are going to watch EVERY PENNY and EVERY purchase... you will lose. You need to try to change her mind set. If you are not saving or not saving enough, then I do recommend a budget.

People get married before they know basic things about each other, probably because it wasn't important enough to have simple conversations about finances and kids. Or they did have the conversations, saw the potential problems, and thought things would change... they almost never change.

She sounds a lot like my X. I wanted to keep a budget, save a certain amount and she just wanted to spend and didn't want to see a marriage consoler. I did buy her a new car and we'd move into nicer houses and I'd have been much happier had I cut it off earlier but instead I kept trying for 20+ years. Who knows what would have happened had I cut if off after a couple of years.

Whether a person likes Dave or not (I get a kick out of him and I like people that don't beat around the bush) I don't see how you can disagree with living within your means and not running up debt. That doesn't mean you have to live like you're broke (unless your are broke of course), you just spend money prudently. I hope they can get past their differences. It may be as much her wanting to be part of the decisions rather than having decisions forced on her (even if they are good decisions) as it is any disagreement on what needs doing. Not a big fan of counselors myself but maybe if they can find a good one...

Actually to be honest I don't see the problem with what dave says Until recently I wasn't really sure if I was handling my student loans properly True I had to move to another country with a lower cost of living. I've been paying for thirteen years. It's nice to know i'm on the right track. What I really feel happy about. I can still work another twenty-five years. My job requires that I live overseas and that's okay.
