I've got all these pieces splattered across various discs but this collection under Gibson with Scott orchestra is irresistible! After all, Gibson Sibelius symphonies rule!

Thank you for this - Phyllis Bryn-Julson is really magnificent in Luonnotar. The other tracks are also exciting and compelling. Despite being out of print, I found this on Spotify, but I will be on the lookout to get the physical product.

I have a request for an episode: your favourite and least favourite recording venues for orchestral performances. I'm hoping you would mention the Mann Auditorium in Tel-Aviv and the Barbican.

Again an interesting video. The Chandos recording is hard to obtain . , it ia our of print. Based on a previous video I bough the Neeme Jarvi 3 CD DGG set...which is very good.

Totally agree about Luonnotar. I learned the piece from the Bernstein recording with Phyllis Curtin. The dubious intonation made the piece almost unlistenable. Then I heard this recording, and my reaction was "Aha! A masterpiece."

The Oceanides is without doubt the finest Finnish tone poem ever premiered in our lovely native state of Connecticut.

I have yet to come across the Gibson set, but until that happens Osmo Vänskä and his Lahti forces is top of my list for the stand alones and Järvi/Göteborg for the Tuolena maidem & Lemminkainen suite (while I try to avoid grieving that Bernstein did not record all of the tone poems).

Oh this disc is a fabulous one. How can you go wrong with Gibson, Sibelius, and the SNO? You can't.

This recording of Sibelius' tone poems is indeed excellent and I have owned this 2 CD recording for many years. But my particular CD #1 has two errors: Track #5 "The Bard" should last 7 minutes 42 seconds, but is missing the last 30 seconds which unfortunately ends up at the beginning of Track 6 "The Dryad" which is lumped together with the complete "The Dryad." Hopefully this has been corrected by Chandos. This is the only one of my thousand plus CD collection that I ever encountered this issue.

David, have you heard the late John Georgiadis last 6 recordings of contemporaries of the Strauss Family 1-4 and Eduard Strauss, vol. 1 &2 ? After which he passed away and so we are left with these to me wonderful editions. I wonder if you could give a talk on these recordings which are on Marco Polo... I watch all of your talks and have many of the recordings you suggest including this one of the Sibelius tone poems... Take care...
