Enjoyed your trip report, I like that you did it in coach instead of a sleeper.

Overnight train in coach, as a senior is not, I repeat, is not the best ride! No matter what anyone, I repeat, anyone says, is not the best ! Please trust me. Nothing personal I like the train, but not the best.

No argument from me. The older you are (over 70) the tougher it is but I didn't know for sure until I tried it...never again...roomette next time or a full room! Thanks for watching.

@@davepov If you are in no hurry, I buy the 30 day Amtrak Rail Pass for coach seats for around $450 good for ten different trains. I research the schedule and plan to layover for a day or two in any city or town on all of the ten trains, I can sleep in a coach seat for one night, but not for two straight nights without a good night's layover in a bed somewhere. Don't just see America riding Amtrak, but also experience America riding Amtrak. Layovers for Amtrak is like a port of call with a cruise ship. Every city has a tourist trap and museums to visit, and every town has a local fishing hole and a nice B&B near the Amtrak station... Ten long train trips for the price of one or two is a great bargain although you will be riding in coach... Instead of buying expensive Amtrak cafe food, bring some food onboard the train. An apple, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a devil ham or potted meat sandwich, a few boiled eggs, a jar of dry roasted peanuts, anything that will keep for a day or two without requiring refrigeration...

@@ronclark9724 All good ideas! I did bring some food on the train but since I hadn't ridden an Amtrak in decades, I thought I'd try the food. Certainly the rail pass is a good idea. If I could talk my wife into it, I'd do it!

I know what you mean. I have to admit, I was praying no one would sit next to me so I could stretch out if need be and I did during the night, just to change sleeping positions. In Illinois the train got filled so I had a "guest" next to me. He was a little strange but pleasant enough and I only rode with him for about two hours.

Hi! I am seriously interested in taking the amtrak from chicago- Seattle- I am considering a roomette- even though its more expensive- two overnights in coach- i think would be taxing
@davepov
@davepov Жыл бұрын
Yes, two nights in coach would be tough. Plus, you get no actual service and cannot eat in the dining car. Remember, meals are included, even with a roomette. Sure, it's a fair amount more but worth it, I believe. Thanks for watching.

Dave, I REALLY enjoyed your style in your Amtrak video (well, also on the other's I have now watched). In the past year, I have been traveling by rail and starting to make my own train videos - I would love to chat with you (email, text, whatever) about tips, etc., as I begin to make more. PS - the Texas Eagles is on the top of my list since I reside in St. Louis and have taken many other routes, but not yet the Texas Eagle.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the kind words. I've watched many videos people have put on KZbin about trips they've taken on trains. I like the different points of view from young and old train riders. I love passenger rail and I hope it continues to improve in the USA and expand! The Texas Eagle is a fascinating train. It's somewhat ordinary until it gets to San Antonio, TX, then it adds food cooked on the train and an observation car. It becomes much longer as it zooms through the southwest. A trip on the TE from St. Louis to LA would be a great adventure. You are welcome to email me. Look me up on LinkedIn.

Everyone living on the Texas Eagle route should visit San Antonio and Chicago at least once. St. Louis, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and El Paso are other cities to explore. I find small towns worthwhile, Springfield has a few Lincoln historical sites to visit, and there is some good fishing holes to be found at all of the stations in the Ozarks of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas...

Thanks for the coach trip report. I would prefer a door with a lock on it. BUT the most important thing you didn't say was PRICE. How much for all this coaching about?

I get it. I was a bit worried about possible theft while I was asleep. But once the lights were dimmed, most people went to sleep and because I woke up several times during the night, I noticed no one stirred except when a few people got on or off at their stops. It's just my POV but I perceived it was a very different crowd that rode the train compared to those who fly. Maybe it's the slower pace. People seem more polite and easy going. Price, yes. It varies so much depending on how far ahead you book your trip. I paid $178 for a roundtrip ticket.

Can you bring Raman noodles on board do they have hot water in the cafe car
@davepov
@davepov Жыл бұрын
That is a good question. Yes, you can bring pre-package noodles with you but will they offer you hot water from the cafe car? I honestly don't know. There is nothing specifically about that on the Amtrak web site. On an Amtrak discussion site on the web (not affiliated with Amtrak) the answer seems to be, yes, you can ask an attendant in the Cafe car for a cup of hot water and he/she will give it to you. Sorry, that's the closest to answer I could find. I was surprised to find you can bring your own alcoholic beverages on board but they can only be consumed in a room or roomette.

Can roomettes fit two people
@davepov

Yes and it's comfortable for sleeping since all Amtrak sleeping accommodations are bunk beds but it is tight when you're both sitting in the roomette.
