Real chuffed to be the first to comment on this video, The track entitled "Crossing Paths" from the CD "Transition". Dave introduces and combines Percussion with Drums on this CD, after playing the whole CD my inspiration levels were sky high and after attending Ronnie Scotts for 6 shows in 6 days to see Dave and his band perform there was just one thing left to do, I went out and got me a set of Latin Percussion Bongo's on a stand, Now all I had to do was nuckle down and learn the Percussion parts with Drums simultaniousley. Using my ears, practising, transcibing & programming all of which helped me to understand just how the two (Drums & Percussion) work together. It was this track that was harder than the rest, there is more Percussion on this track than any of the others and its in 6 time, half time shuffle. Eventually I was happy with what I had learnt and could now play. I'm always inspired by you Dave, Thank You Gio for this post.

Hi Sam, sorry for the delay in answering your question, anyhow here is my answer. Firstly, hearing this track on the "Transition" CD really did blow my mind, I played the heck out of it trying to understand where Dave was coming from. I knew where the Bongo's, Djembe & Cowbell were situated, my problem was working out the stickings as the BD & HH parts were pretty much the same throughout most of the tune so the feet parts were a doddle. When it came to the hands which are literally all over the place, the hands are playing at least 4 times more than what the feet are playing. This tune to my way of thinking can be thought of in 2 ways in terms of time signature (6/8 or a simple shuffle). Thinking of it as a shuffle it tends to get given that shuffle type groove but treating it as a 6/8 groove worked much better for me. My foot parts were sorted so I began to focus on writing out the stick parts, instead of rewinding the track every 10 seconds in order to try grab a piece of the groove I made an hour long repartitous recording of each of the different sections on my digital mixer, slowing it down would only of lowered the pitch of everything making it confusing, however I do have a piece of kit called a "Riff'o'Matic" which is a digital recorder that can be used for slowing down anything which will play back at 3 different speeds without affecting pitch of drums or any other instrument, real handy for learning parts etc. The right hand is moving between the Low Cobell & Main Snare Drum whilst the left hand is much busier moving between the Aux Snare Drum (Snare Off) High Bongo, Low Bongo and Djembe. I now had a rough road map written out of the section I wanted to learn which is after the Intro to this tune. At first I thought that what was being played percussion wise in that first section was going to be a carbon copy in the same sections but further into the track, I was wrong, percusively with the left hand there are 3 variations of Bongo, Aux Snare phrases, it was just a case of listening, learning & transcribing those variations. The next step was to program a bar of each phrase (Stick Parts Only) then string them together, what I had programmed was a carbon copy minus the foot parts which I then added, I was now beginning to understand how this masterpiece was constructed, I then began work on the physical aspect of playing just that one section but with all 3 percussion phrases. If your familiar with Ghost Notes on a Snare Drum, In this track Ghost Notes are played now and again with the left hand on the High Bongo & Aux Snare, they vary depending on which part of the percussion phrase is being played 1 2 or 3. Dave Weckl was now on the road promoting this CD, Ronnie Scotts in London performing for 6 nights in a row, I had to go see him as he is my favourite player of all time plus I needed to see whether I was on the right track regarding my learing of this tune, to see how Dave did it and how close I was to nailing it, I attended all 6 performances closely watching Dave from different angles and to my suprise all the stickings I had learnt and worked out for myself were the same as what Dave played on the CD as well as these live performances. On the 3rd night I knew the parts well enough to be able to play along with the band, my hands playing on my knees with my feet happening too, I remember Tom Kennedy who had a clear view of me playing along, he was smiling at me whilst trying to get Dave to take a look my way. You hear quite a few of Dave's tunes being covered by drummers but I've never heard anyone cover this particular track, After what I went through learning the all the different sections of this piece I can see why. But I enjoyed every minute of it and just knowing that what I had learnt completely blind at first only to be finally confirmed by Mr Weckl that I was on the same page was an incredible feeling, I felt as special as the man himself. I know there is only one Dave Weckl and I also know how much of an influence he is to drummers worldwide but its a great feeling to have learnt & understood something that so far no other drummer will attempt. At present I'm not able to upload a video demo of this because I am homeless, all my equipment and belongings are all boxed up and in storage but I think I may be able to upload a demo with just feet and hands. @BRAND NEW
