Of course, style is everything. It's not measurable, It's quality. That said, you have to be not a fan to recognize weckl's is in another level. Sorry but any true musician can see his distinction, It is just see the work of all of them

I am a massive Rush fan, and one of the greatest things I LOVE about Neil is his humility as a drummer. He would tell you that he sucks compared to these guys, an "apprentice" as he likes to say (he is, especially, a massive Bozzio and Weckl fan). At the same time, these people would say, "you're really underestimating yourself." I still feel to this day that amateur drummers do not give Neil enough credit for the time, money and expense that he put into the Buddy Rich Tribute CD's. As Modern Drummer said, although guys like Weckl and Bozzio are amazing, Neil was probably the only drummer with the record label clout to convince a label that such a project was worth investing in and releasing. And I know that he also invested some of his own money to keep the project moving forward. They also recorded those 2 volumes at a great recording studio in NYC called The Power Station that Is known for its awesome drum sound. Lastly, I feel Neil was never given proper credit for the massive gains in his playing in between his first appearance at the Buddy Rich Tribute Concert and his second appearance after he had studied extensively under Peter Erskine. I mean here is fucking Neil Peart, a multi-millionaire musician, taking classes to become better at his craft. That takes incredible humility, and for me, unlike the people that just want to piss on everyone, I felt there was a massive difference in the level of his performance between those 2 gigs. Keep in mind, he is not a jazz player by nature. So sad to see that Neil has retired, but it was inevitable. Everyone bitched and complained about his change of style in the mid-90's, but he was suffering from severe tendonitis, and he had to learn how to play the skins without it having such a negative effect on his body physically. That is the thing that no one talks about. Freddie Gruber gave us another 10-15 years of Neil behind the drum kit. You may not like the sound, but I like the Rush records, and Neil throughout his life was not playing his instrument in an ergonomic fashion. It was killing his body. It was leading him to injuries that would eventually force him to quit.
@mattmarkus4868
@mattmarkus4868 2 жыл бұрын
he took lessons from gruber after watching steve smith's massive improvement in his physicality and he was curious what it might do to his technique to study with him. I don't know what you mean about tendonitis being the reason. Also, he didn't change his style, he always had the same style. He couldn't help it, it was him and his personality regardless of what he did with his technique. His video from the mid 90s showed some excellent improvements in his technique though. So much more relaxed, but still the same personality musically speaking (not a bad thing for my taste).

In one of Neil's books he states that he can think of at least "50 drummers" whom he considers worthy of the "greatest drummer" moniker. Personally, I never liked to compare musicians. Weckl would not be a good fit for Rush nor Peart in a fusion gig. Each is their own greatness for different reasons.

XDrummerSteve I also don't like comparing Musicians, but getting good compliments from someone who watched you play and from a totally different genre is surreal. From another vid, it's Dave Weckl who gave compliments to Mike Portnoy, saying "Awesome playing." I definitely agree on your last statement that "Each is their own greatness for different reason." Cheers!!

Once in a lifetime occasion for Neil Peart & Dave Weckl to be in the same room talking about cymbals. Surprisingly enough, what Neil Peart & Dave Weckl have in common aside from being amazing drummers is that fact that both were former Zildjian endorsers & both have developed their own signature cymbal line from Sabian. Neil with the Paragon line & Dave with HHX Evolution & Legacy lines

Every drummer has their own short coming in terms of skills etc. Nothing to be ashamed off. It's good to see Mike being sincerely knew he was outshined (Like you mentioned). Everyone has to eat the humble pie once a while. Good to see Mike Portnoy's ego being suppressed this time. And that's a good thing. But i enjoy Mike's playing than Dave simply because it's much easier to listen. To each of his own.

In this series Mike played and when done Weckl gave him a compliment and you could see Mike's face get red and he hung his head a bit as if Weckl was just being kind. I'm a fan of Mike and was a DT fan for 20+ years, but I get what you're saying about his persona. Clearly he knew he was way out of his league with the likes of a Weckl in the house. Dave's one of the greatest to ever grace a kit for sure. He's my #1.
