This is the beginning of a new series I am going to do called "Study The Greats." My goal is to find a new video every week of a drummer that I am inspired by and to isolate something cool from the video and break it down for you guys. This is a way for me to get back into studying the pro's and adding to my own vocabulary while hopefully creating content that you guys find interesting as well. So, if you want to see more of these, subscribe to my channel and I will try to stick to making one of these every week on top of whatever performance videos I will make in the future. Thanks for watching!

Great concept man. I've been a huge Weckl/Colaiuta fan since the 80's so this for me is interesting and nostalgic. I remember putting on the old Chick tapes and playing on along to Weckl and the band every day, man I tell ya', it was heaven! Keep up the great work man!

I've made it full circle with these videos, thanks for making them man! I wasn't sure if I wanted to "look behind the curtain" so to speak. The greats that you cover play these things that just sound so magical and I wasn't sure if I wanted to uncover the magic and take away the mystery. I'm glad I did though, I've been incorporating a lot of this stuff in my playing. Thanks again!

I'm not sure, but to me it looks like Dave's hitting the floor tom separate from the hi-hat. ( not flams or double stops) ? :o Maybe he's hitting the bass drum when he hits the hi-hats and the floor tom is on its own..? Unless he's doing something with double bass..? Just something I thought I'd point out, idk. Great Vid and Transcription! Thank you!

Hi Austin! I love this series! Thank you for making it :) just wondering, are you sure he's not playing three strokes with his left hand on the snare at one point? When slowing it down, it sure looks like it. Thanks again!
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 8 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, I actually had filmed a version of this lesson thinking that he was doing a triplet with the left hand! It looked to me like that's what he was doing but I was having such a hard time playing it that it was making me wonder if he was really doing that or not. I went back and tried different stickings and the one I use in this video seemed to work better than a left hand triplet and it made more sense to me that he'd play that. I may still be wrong but I also thought the same thing as you!

+Austin Burcham Good job man, thanks a lot. I'm a brazilian drummer, sorry for the mistakes on language. Your video has inspired me. Subscribed and shared on my Facebook. However I agree with +Richard Söderlund. Allow me to suggest the hands combination which seemed to me more accurate. From the "2" of the second measure: Rllrlr rlRLll. There are three strokes on the left hand. I have seen mr. Weckl do that sometimes, he's able. Yeah! No wonder he's that amazing. I hope I have helped as I was helped! Greetings to everyone here! ;)

LOVE IT BRO...great idea. Totally backing this...drum porn rules. with far less guilt! Put your link in the description. Do you find the visual makes the impact far more exciting than just the audio? Many times I will 'hear' and it blows by, but seeing makes it stick far deeper. I hear a lot of complex stuff and go, "ehh...." and hear what we call easier fills and go, "hell yeah!" Your kit sounds awesome bro. So digging a drum brotha who feels what I do...ever take a road trip w/your friends and it is water off a duck's back...until you connect w/another drummer who 'gets it' :) I don't analyze w/t intellect you are administering here. respect the energy it takes.

Hey Austin, been watching your videos for more than a year now, really awesome work. I came back to re-watch this one and cought you saying "i haven't played traditional in a while", but i guess you've been playing with it ever since. Every other "study the greats", workout lessons, jam sessions, etc, you've been using traditional grip. You probably get this a lot, but why is it that you've decided to go for traditional grip? I've been training traditional for a while and i do it mostly because i'm trying to get a lighter touch, being able to go really quiet for ghost notes and such, and i admit, for atempted badassary haha. But why do you do it? It's a very interesting choice, seeing that some people would even consider traditional grip to be outdated (which i absolutely disagree).
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 6 жыл бұрын
There's something kind of magical about it... It's kind of tough to describe but I definitely think differently and play differently with traditional. I go back to matched when I need power and pinpoint precision with rimshots, but if I am trying to play more fluid with lots of texture, I prefer traditional. They're both valid and applicable for different things... hope that helps!
@michelaraujo4375
@michelaraujo4375 6 жыл бұрын
Sure helped! I learned with matched but started learning traditional lately specially because of all the greats that use it, Vinnie, Novak, Weckl. And couldn't agree more, it is kinda magical, the way that i think and feel changes completely when i use traditional, i feel somewhat inspired to go down a certain path when playing traditional grip, even thoug i still have more precision and chops with matched because it's the grip i learned with. And your "study the greats" series has been a real inspiration too, keep 'em coming, they're awesome.

Austin, you do a great job with these lessons. However, and don't take this wrong, you DON'T have to play your traditional grip way back to get a great sound. Weckl doesn't even play far back with his left hand now, like he used to. It's super awkward, given all of the bouncing that he does, especially with the hi-hat.
