The thing is, the Surface products are great. They look amazing, and their performance is also great. But at that price point, you can get a really good full-fledged Laptop. And if you're an illustrator, you can spend a little bit more on a new pen tab. A little inconvenient if you want to draw when you travel, but it saves you a lot of money.

It doesn't really seem like a good option. It isn't very fast and oled isn't so practical for a working device. There is alot of competition especially with previous Gen products. Also Asus sells a laptop based on this screen for $200 (or less) more that has AMD.

Sign of the future: I absolutely LOVE the fact that we're seeing 2-in-1 devices come down to consumer prices away from expensive business/enterprise levels. Why? Because it's going to start putting pressure on the Tablet Market where people see good media experience on a device that also doubles up as an affordable and workable laptop and all in 1 device for half the price of both !! When this happens at high enough quality at these prices, iPadOS will become niche and Apple will be forced to reconsider 2-in-1 products of their own. That or by then ARM by NUVIA will power the next-gen 2-in-1 devices rivalling Apple-Silicon for Price:Performance and battery and on Windows-ARM all the while with improvements coming out: * Improved touch/stylus/GUI * Improved Cloud options * LTE 5G * Improved design details eg kickstand innovation, typepad improvements etc * Lighter and more portable * Screens are already looking much better.

What I'm really waiting for is a phone with the full windows experience. I feel like we're inching closer towards that and as someone who hates how locked down and simplistic they tend to me (albeit android is more open, but still limited), I'd love to have the freedom to do almost anything I could on a PC on my phone (without difficult workarounds) and vice versa (there are still a number of features limited to mobile phones). I also think it'd do a lot to shake up the market for phones. Add some more options and introduce a new mindset to buyers (like not needing a new model with minimal upgrades every year and expecting more from phone companies). With Microsoft introducing a way to bring android apps to windows and 2 in 1s being more affordable, having more options, and continuously getting lighter and smaller, I'm interested in the future of mobile devices as a whole.

Agreed! I think especially now that more and more are considering going digital/online, portability, convenience, and power are all important for many professionals. As an artist myself, I'm choosing to wait a little bit more before I splurge on a new device--the iPadPro lineup is always good, but it's too limiting. The power it has is so wasted, and competition like the Samsung S tablets and SP have begun to threaten its throne. I'm so excited for the future!

the problem with media consumption is that you cant separate it directly from other activities. me, im buying the devices for professional use (thinkpad, surface pro) and also use them for a couple of hours to watch a movies, some youtube videos etc. if im buying a dedicated consumption device i tend to buy a standard ipad or a tab s7 (10-11"). then once i have movies on them, because im also interested in chemistry, anatomy, genetics i put some courses on the consumption device. then suddenly the screen is too small to understand all those explanations (screen is ok for watching series like see etc but too small to follow a chemistry course with a lot of calculations and tables). then im back to my pro devices like thinkpad, surface pro i can use for watching series while i cook and also watch courses. besides doing programming on them.

I must admit, the Asus is quite compelling. I've actively avoided these Windows tablet devices as all seem to be a poor value proposition for my use case. I may be swayed if these sort of devices start to see some real competition in terms of the value proposition. That said, I couldn't be happier with my XPS 2in1 - seems to strike the right balance for me as someone who makes use of the traditional laptop form factor and occasionally flips the screen to either tablet or tent mode. I know my device is at the upper end of the market here but I've seen quite good 2in1 options from Dell and and Lenovo that hit the value sweet spot in my opinion.

I got a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 in 2020 for $600. It has an AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor with integrated graphics, 16 GB of RAM, and a PCIe 3.0 SSD. It is also a 2 in one. The keyboard does not detach but it has a nice touch screen and a good pen that comes with it and the screen folds all the way to the back for an easy to use, flat surface. Like I said, I've had it for over a year and I'm surprised Dave never did a review. Especially in this instance I wonder why. To me it has so much more value than that ASUS because it has better internal hardware. I can run all of my engineering software without it slowing down and can play some reasonably intensive games (not any of the top graphics games, but decently intensive). 16 GB of RAM and a good AMD processor/GPU.

Honestly, when I plan on buying something like this, then I am not interested in how the performance is now, but how it will be 3-5 years from now. That's harder to evaluate, but more important to me. I don't buy new tech products every year. So if the Surface lasts me double the time of the Asus, I can make a fair comparison. What is the expected lifecycle of these products?
@sloppynyuszi
@sloppynyuszi 2 жыл бұрын
That’s the problem with most reviewers. 90% of people don’t update every year. If you do buy new tech every year, lower end is fine, as most devices are released to work for at least one year. But flagship devices like this should work well for at least 3 years. Or more. In defence of the surface. I recently bought a second hand surface pro 2 for very cheap ($100). Just for curiosity. Still had the Wacom EMR stylus which is tech they update very rarely as it’s just that good. I was surprised how good it runs. I can still run clip studio ex and sketchbook pro and the battery on the go lasts an easy 3 hours. Which for a product that came out in 2012 is amazing. So I’m actually considering getting the new 8, as they have improved the pen now, as the replacement on the surface pro 3 was trash. And I’m pretty confident performance and design will be pretty stable for a few years.

It’s a valid point to consider. I bought a Surface Pro 6 which has a better cpu than this Asus one. Normally it’s more than enough for me, but when I’m running a lesson on Zoom, recording the lesson on my computer, annotating large pdf documents, screen sharing that content, and keeping multiple Google docs/sheets tabs open while wirelessly Miracasting to my classroom TV… even the Pro 6 starts chugging at times. This Asus looks like it would have no hope of keeping up. And I originally never thought I would do something as demanding on my device as this when I originally bought it. Now I’m regretting not splurging for the i7 model with more RAM.

The problem is the 60 hz OLED; compared to a 120 hz IPS, you may not notice it at first, but once you go back to a 60 hz screen, you WILL notice it. Not to mention Dave goes back on his PWM experience in it (he literally said in 2019 that he didn't personally use OLED screens because he was sensitive to PWM, which is hypocritical for him to do this review because it introduces bias into the review). Honestly, I haven't been liking a lot of his recent reviews this year, but while he says the Pro 8 is more expensive, you got a poor product at the base price last year with the Pro 7, the Pro 8 has more storage and RAM for just $300 more than last years base price, which had an i3 with 128 GB storage (wasn't possible to upgrade it then) and 4 GB of RAM, which is awful nowadays and even back then. @@tanaykapadia2301 arguably its not. I have neither the time nor care to do the research or run the numbers (thus arguably) but they could potentially boost sales and improve their image by allowing the iPad lines to run macOS or a hybrid of iPadOS and MacOS or just straight up both and allow you to switch between them (I HATE apple and would dip over a thousand for that because that's my dream product (one that lets me seamlessly make the best of mobile and desktop devices)). They could also REALLY shake up the market by throwing such a product on the line. The problem with apple is that they're complacent (not nearly as much so as Microsoft in the past though) and fail to make the most of their properties or capitalize on their products. A lot of their decisions that seemingly benefit the business are most likely going to bite them in the long run or sacrifice potential growth (not switching to USB-C on their phones for example). Again, I haven't done the research or run the numbers, but I find it hard to believe devasting the market with that god tier product wouldn't be better for business (and because its apple, everyone would know about it instantly and flock to it way more than Microsoft and their surface line).

@@vullord666 Apple has done their research and probably feel that getting macOS to work with touch would be as disastrous as when MS did it with W8. They understand that if they did it well it would still probably lead to compromises and issues so they are going the other route of getting the best tablet and best laptop. You can get a MB Air and iPad Air for a similar price to the base SP8 and having tried a SP6/7 and compared to having a MB Air/iPad Pro combo, I much prefer the latter. Even MS has thrown in the towel, by now running Android apps to fill the void of missing tablet apps. I am sure if MS could do it all over again, they would have bought Android when they had the chance and gone the Apple route with a dedicated mobileOS and make them work well together. If you think Apple would ever make the bad mistake MS made then you are living in cloud cuckoo land. I grabbed a top end surface pro 4 with KB and pen over a year ago on ebay, it only cost me about $300, and it works fine. I went to Asus's page about this Slate device and it was pretty light on information, especially the upgrade options, and it appears that it hasn't come out yet.

Research that I have read recently suggests that keyboards setup with a negative rake (sloping down and away from you) so that your wrists and hands can be more inline than bent may have better benefits.

I used to be angry at Microsoft not including the keyboard, but I kinda get it now. The idea behind it is more about upgrading. The designs won’t change much, and the past model the accessory compatibility was quite good. So when you need to upgrade to a surface pro 9 or 12 later you can just buy the tablet and not have to worry about the keyboard and pen.

Well, for 2 in 1's I'm just going to go with the Surface Pro line. Sure, it's expensive as heck, but those who buys a Surface Pro aren't exactly those guys who are just looking for entertainment. As one owning a Surface Pro 7, I find it sturdy and reliable for work and it's a good backup device if my main conputer broke down due to it's old age. It's also surprisingly convenient to bring around due to it's small form factor, which it tends to be a lot smaller than most 13" devices. I don't like Microsoft but they sure make things that's great for those who needs a compact PC in a neat little package.

I have a gaming laptop for daily use, and think about buying a Windows tablet for travelling. For that use case the Surface Pro‘s are too expensive in my opinion, although I love how they look. The Slate with its OLED screen is interessting, but I‘m not sure if the performance is sufficient, especially when planning to keep the device long term. A better processor would make the device more compelling imo. Apart from that its definitely a great device.

First of all I love Asus' new OLED commitment it's the absolute right thing to do. But. I think you could also have compared it with the Surface Go (m3/i3). The features, price and performance are much more similar. What you would gain would be the bigger OLED panel.. and that's sadly it. What you would loose is Windows Hello support, a backlit keyboard and a build-in kickstand. Those daily life things. That makes it a harder comparison in my mind. The OLED panel is the big deal here but you get a "bad" computer with it. :/ I will still consider it when it gets availible in my region. And I hope they make a higher-end version that you can really compare with the Surface Pro in the future. Cuz damn I love OLED :(

That's exactly what I thought, the Surface pendant would be the Go and not the Pro - performance wise. The screen is great, but for me the performance is just too low.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 2 жыл бұрын
The Surface Go is only 10.5 inches and clearly too small for many workflows or usage. They are def not the same and this was the right comparison. For many users with a workload not needing the power, the ASUS is a much better choice and hopefully will save many people wasted money upgrading to the SP8, which is overpriced and extremely poor value. This is the first of many much cheaper "slate" devices coming due to cheap OLED displays now being widely available so it will make the Surface Pro struggle to sell in the consumer and education market as we see much better value alternatives.
@hackepetra8502
@hackepetra8502 2 жыл бұрын
@@andyH_England Yeah. I said the Go is smaller and the Slate is bigger in my third sentence. I have a Go and I have it plugged up with a projector and a mouse and keyboard writing this comment. I can tell you, the struggles lie within the performance and not the size of the device. I think the SP8 is priced about 200$ too high. It's the same price as the big iPad Pro and that is what MS is seeing as the main competitor for the SP8. So I get where they are coming from with the price. I wouldn't say it's "extremly poor" value (that would be the Surface Lapotop Studio) as it still is a great device but it surely is not "good" value atm. But they'll get cheaper as they always do. And for the size differences to the Go... I made the calculations because I was curious (3:2 vs. 16:9). You'll loose 1,6cm or 0.7 inches in display size height. And a lot more in width. That is no world changing difference. Especially for office work and browsing. But if you mostly want to consume media there is no choice here. Asus Slate it is. Although one could still argue about how much a windows tablet is good for consuming media. I really hope you are right with 'many much cheaper slate devices with oled coming' because I'd love to replace my Go with an OLED device THAT IS MORE POWERFULL. :P

The 16:9 display is a deal breaker for me. It's good for videos and gaming, but not much else. 16:10 is better for tablets. And it's only 1080p. Which I guess is fine for a $600 tablet. But you're looking at 165ppi versus the base iPad's 264ppi. Spec wise it's the same as my Surface Pro 5 with the i5-7300U. The N6000 isn't going to win any races, but it's perfectly serviceable. But I'd really splurge on upgrading the RAM to 8GB. You can still get away with 4GB on Windows, but it's not ideal in 2021.
@Sithbadger

This actually reminds me quite a bit of the Dell Latitude 7275 2n1 tablet, which you can still pick up in the $400-500 range if you shop around. I keep one lying around as a backup that I snagged a couple years back with the keyboard and pen (now sadly lost). It has an older core m5 cpu and the intel HD 620 Graphics iirc. This makes it phenomenal for most of the basic stuff and you can push it a bit, but it doesn't have fan cooling, so you do have to keep temperatures in mind. That all said it really is quite a capable little setup that will also give you a decent "Surface experience" if you are on a budget.

A lot of this "Microsoft Surface premium cost" comes from Microsoft being kind of a "boutique" hardware manufacturer. They don't have the pull with parts suppliers that larger-volume computer companies like Dell or Lenovo have. So yes, just about everything in the Microsoft Surface lineup, form the Go to the Laptop Go to the Surface Pro, Studio, etc. is, initially, about 30% overpriced and different tiers of devices in Microsoft's lineup are just priced too close to higher tiers -- example: the Surface Laptop Go i3 model isn't all that much less expensive than the base model Surface Pro 7. Also, I ran into that flat keyboard issue with the Lenovo Duet. Simple solution was buying small rubber feet to apply to the corners nearest the side of the keyboard that attached to the device - viola, just enough of an angle to make typing a bit better.

The “good” thing about surface is that even though their price tags are really high, they go on sale frequently and often at 20-30% discount. And their resale value is also not that great, so the secondhand market might be a good place for people who really want a surface but don’t want to pay high price for them. I had a surface pro 4 back in college and it was a great portable machine. I used it a for illustrations, animation and even 3D stuff. (I pushed it a bit too much) The ability to use all windows software instead of just apps was great. I sold it eventually and got myself a laptop with discrete graphic cards, but I did enjoy my surface a lot!

On my surface pro 2, I had an issue where my surface pen kept popping off the side and never being seen again, especially when using it in commutes to school or lending the hardware to careless family. I've been waiting for a tablet with a better pen docking solution that still uses x86 architecture for the processor. It's a shame the screen isn't OLED, but the surface pro 8 is what I've been waiting for for many years. I am using it for game development too, so the extra processing power is pretty useful.

I use my SP7 with OneNote and a Docking Station and if you wanna work smoothly you have to get 16GB RAM, a well processor and a good battery life. Cause you don't want stutter scrolling or your pen doesn't work like you expect it. At home it should work with a second or maybe a third monitor that you can watch the videocall of your teacher, see the tasks in front of you and use your tablet to just write. They are absolutely awesome and I think just an iPad or the better surfaces can manage this well without getting headache. :D If you use it in School it needs good battery life and should switch fast between your pdf's and your written stuff. :)

For the sake of comparison, the same can be said of the ipad pro 12.9 model... $1099 for the base model, the pencil another $130 and magic keyboard another $350. All in $1,579 plus tax. But ultimately people do think it's worth the price for the iPad pro and for the same reasons other people will think the surface pro is also worth it. It's not about what works but often times it's about what the product says about you and your choices. Brand recognition matters so much more than it probably should. And those premium brands with those premium builds come at a premium prices.
