@TamasKiss-yk4st18 сағат бұрын
Well, they forgot to mention that, the $499 handheld will get the older Z1 chip instead if Z2, it will only have 16GB RAM instead of 32GB RAM etc.. so of course it's cheaper if it's also lower speced and use 2 years ago parts instead of newer/more powerfull and expensive parts.. but keep in mind, the already 2 years old chip will also be weak 2 years sooner to get the newer updates or run the newest games.. so you need to consider is that wort it, if you can't get anything just after 2 years, or you can use it freely for about 4 years (so that 2 years longer because of the newer/stronger CPU/GPU and because of the doubled amount of RAM..)

the trackpad, even though it's... incredibly small, is still no doubt gonna be useful i'm just glad we're finally getting more steamOS devices. in my opinion it's trivial to install bazzite, but some people understandably don't wanna fuss with all that, and just want an out-of-the-box experience. i'm really hoping this catches on and more companies start shipping steamOS
@Penofhell14 сағат бұрын
Come on. It's useless for anything else than moving the mouse on the desktop, which SteamOS is specifically designed for you not to ever need to do that (you can, but you don't need to). Dave.... You know you can install bazzite os on any handheld, right?
@KiaulenКүн бұрын
Yeah, but there's a huge difference between a community project and Valve themselves supporting it. I'm not running bazzite or Nobara or similar on my desktop specifically because I don't trust them to be well supported. I will happily put steamOS on it once that comes out for general use.

The pointing device is technically not a trackpad, but an optical pointing device (sometimes referred to as an optical mouse). It works on a different principle. It looked in one picture that I saw like the Steam OS version of the device might have a trackpad instead of the optical pointer (that is, it appeared to have a bigger square). Edit: I thought about this, and I think it is likely that the picture I saw actually showed only the white Windows model of the S and showed a black/charcoal non-S in the same picture rather than a Steam powered S.

Finally yes! I’ve been so excited to see more Steam OS devices, and this is right up my alley! You’ve pretty much sold it to me Dave. If this can match, or even come close to the efficiency of the Steam Deck, then I’m buying it 100%. It’s great that it should outperform the Steam Deck as you said, but if it does it at 80w (hyperbole) then that’s not impressive to me. Can you give us a rough estimate of what you expect in terms of efficiency, from your educated opinion? Please.

The price seems very bad if you think for 50 more you can get Ally X, no? This doesn't have a "new" CPU. Z2Go is just zen3 with rdna2. Z2 is just Z1 extreme and z2 extreme is a new cpu.

I can't believe they still have the joystick under the buttons. Why? It's the most awkward and most uncomfortable position for your fingers. It's physically painful. Valve basically has the best device on the market no matter how "old" it is.

Yea the trackpads are amazing especially in games like dota 2, where you need a lot of buttons mapped to a touch surface to make up for the smaller number of buttons on a handheld.

I don't get how everyone acts like they don't know how to use windows when we all grew up with it . Use big picture mode its the dame interface..yes the suspect resume is better on steam but windows can be PROPERLY setup up to be a console experience. Also if youre like me you have pc game pass which you cannot install native game pass games in steam . Windows isn't the prettiest for a handheld but i think the issue is way way overblown
@video0dotmov6 сағат бұрын
SteamOS won't bother you about setting up OneDrive out of nowhere by default. SteamOS won't try to get you to use Copilot by default. The experience is tuned to be perfect for the product's intended use case by default. It doesn't matter if a console-like experience is just a few settings or commands away in Windows, the consumer wants their device to just work. If you need an example of this to understand - would you use Linux on your desktop if I told you that a Windows-like experience is just a few clicks and commands away, or would you rather get a Windows-like experience by just using Windows?

The idea of a "Steam Cube" that is basically following the Mac Mini form factor sounds like a sure thing. The main downside that I can foresee is if it is exclusively Steam OS, then I lose access to mods unless the game happens to support Workshop or has a built-in mod experience like Baldur's Gate 3.

I'm pretty disappointed that they didn't retain the clip out controllers with the mouse functionality, as that was the most appealing facet of the original Legion Go. Still, I'm glad this thing exists looking forward to more SteamOS devices as I love the UI. What I would like to see is a smaller SteamOS device (doesn't even have to be particularly powerful), something I can pop in my bag and have available for indie games, similar form factor to the Switch Lite. Not sure if I'm asking too much for a pocketable PC. The GPD Win Mini has my eye, if it ran SteamOS. I actually find myself gaming on Steam Indie games lately mainly on my 14 inch 3 year old Chromebook, it's just such a shame bluetooth controllers don't work for Linux containers.
