The newly refined 2.7L High Output Turbo engine in the refreshed 2022 Chevrolet Silverado has been bumped up to 430 foot pounds of torque!! In this video I take a quick test drive just to get my impressions of this newly updated motor. After driving it, I am impressed. It doesn't sound as cool as a V8 but it definitely performs like one.

The biggest difference you'll notice is the ride and handling. The 4 cylinder is significantly lighter and shorter.. the 2.7 sits behind the front axle line. The 2.7 takes bumps better, steering response is better and takes hard stops better.

I am currently driving 2022 Sierra 1500 elevation with the 2.7 turbo Ohio put engine and I can personally tell you after having this truck for just over A month and a half and 2000 miles later this engine has been amazing. I love torque that’s available in the load of midrange and the gas mileage has consistently been between 17.5 and 19 miles per gallon. It is still rated to toe about 8800 pounds. I don’t miss my 5.3 at all after driving this new truck so far with the 2.7 Turbo high output engine.

I am looking at the GEN3 2023 Chevy Colorado Trail Boss with crewcab, shortbed and the same 2.7L Turbo 4 cylinder gas engine with the High Output 310hp and 430 foot pounds of torque. If it moves the fullsized truck it should really move the much smaller Colorado. I currently have a 21' GMC Canyon crewcab, shortbed with a naturally aspirated V6 and it has 305hp and 276 foot pounds of torque and it moves the Canyon very good and both motors are rated to tow 7000ibs

The true test of this engine and the lower price point is the total cost of ownership at the 100k mark. Let's see how that 2.7 Turbo holds up at 100k. I have a 2000 Silverado LT Z71 Ext. Cab 4x4 5.3 V8 .... 211k on it. Little to no major problems and I bought it with 101k used for $5200 in 2008. Pretty hard to beat that.

The 2000 ish era of LS, and for that matter, many other vehicles was imo the pinnacle of longevity. I think with strong, mindful maintenance the 2.7 will be alright, but I'm apprehensive it will be par with the older LS engines for longevity. I do think the 2.7 will live long as the new v8s.

Very interesting test drive. Even for an old school guy like me. Buyers, take my advice, use quality synthetic oil and change it every three to five thousand miles depending on how much City / highway driving you do. Keep that engine and especially turbo lubricated with cleaner oil. Unless you lease it, then just follow the manufacturer's suggested.

I have a v6 non turbo with port fuel injection. I am still changing the oil every 6 months or 5,000 miles. Also, it is a plug in hybrid so 5,000 miles is more like 2,500 on the engine. Oil changes are cheap and nobody ever regretted getting them done too often.

Hi Dave, Like your honest product reviews. I have on order a refreshed 22 Silverado LT. I first thought of the 2.7 but checked the Canadian version of EPA mileage estimates and the difference between that and the 5.3 was miniscule. As you said the cost savings will be the initial cost factor and the factory incentives to get the 2.7. I have had the 5.3 in my 14 Silverado and my current 17 Sierra. I figured I would get the 5.3 so I figured if I was paying $2000 for the 5.3 I would go for the extra and get the 3.0. I don't tow heavy weights but I think the 3.0 will give a better driving experience not to mention the better fuel economy despite the current diesel prices. I saw a KZbin video of changing the oil on the 2 7, the plastic drain plug was a red flag for me. As you mentioned there is the turbo lag, I had a 84 Dodge Daytona with a turbo, also I think the 10 speed is a better transmission. The 2.7 might be a great engine but there will be the stigma of a 4 cyl in a full size truck. I am guessing down the road unless there is some major reliability issue with the 3.0 that a truck with either a 5.3 or 3.0 will have a higher resale than a 2.7. Great honest reviews we need more honest and knowledgeable sales professionals like you certainly in Canada.👍

@@DaveBsellsChevy I am thinking the same once things settle down diesel will eventually come down, where I live in Ontario it was usually an 8 cents differential so definitely a bit of gouging going on. The maintenance isn't that much more for oil and fuel filter and a litres of def. At first I was concerned about the long start issue and the belt in the rear doesn't bother me. My saleman ordered a RST 3.0. His order went in the same time as mine so we are both into week 9. Originally the plan was to build Silverados sold in Canada to be made at the Oshawa plant but from what I gather for some unknown reason they haven't built one yet. Having another plant that could crank out 1000 a day would certainly help. I am hoping to see the new truck by the beginning of June and where it's assembled will be a surprise. GM Oshawa consistently won awards for quality so in a way I was hoping to have it built there, with no offense to Fort Wayne, my Sierra was built there and it's been flawless. By the way I ordered my truck in Red Hot, like the truck in your video. My last 2 trucks were black, couldn't take another black. I liked the Glacier Blue but it's a fad colour that would wear off in time. Look forward to your videos Dave, glad I found the channel. 👍

I bet the “real world” city mileage is a lot better than the EPA city cycle. Also, good for people that sit in their trucks with the engines idling for air conditioning / heat. You are probably using almost half the gas idling ~0.125 to 0.25 gallons an hour less compared to the V8.

If you're just looking for a truck to have one you might like it. If you need to actually haul anything, including a family, you will find a V8 will get you better performance with less throttle. As far as gas mileage I would say it's negligible. It seems to waste more gas and always races the engine like you're forcing it to work. Shame they didn't go with a V6 turbo instead.

I have a 2022 LTD (348 torque). Had a 2007 Z71 with the 5.3. We take our camper, (9,500lbs GVW), about 4-5 times a year. First time 2 weeks ago with the new truck. I can tell you that this truck out pulls the 07 by far. I was very skeptical at first with the 2.7, but am now very impressed, and for the record, I'm a Chevy V8 guy. I was waiting on the new 2022 "REFRESHED" to come out, unfortunately, after 260,000 miles on the 07, it was time, frame rust. I'm getting 25 MPG on the Interstate holding 70MPH. I am not disappointed with this truck at all, well not until the 28th of the month when the payment is due anyway. But with the current economy, what are you going to do. Used trucks were running close to the price of new one, (comparable with low mileage).

I doubt if this engine will hold up compared to a 8 over say 200,000 or 300,000 miles. The transmission will work harder too . Most people who buy pickups tend to keep them till they die and don't trade them every 3 years... so long term reliability is very important for truck buyers.
