I'd opt for the 8 over the 4 any day, especially since the 4 is turbocharged and can drop half it's displacement. That 4 might be great new, but I very much doubt it will age well. Also, when did a low end truck costing over 50 grand become a good deal. I must be getting old.....GET OFF MY LAWN !

Just to clarify, there is no black paint under the High Temperature Wax coating in the frame. It is applied directly over bare steel in a dip tank. The frame is welded together, dipped in a cleaning solution and then waxed. The transfer case logo is not American Axle but Magna International (who supplies the frame itself to GM). The plastic panel covering the front suspension components is not a “skid plate” but a stone shield.

I've been driving turbo charged Saab's for nearly 30 years now. My current 9-5 is tuned to 300 HP and 330 ft pd of torque out of a 2.3L 4 cylinder turbocharged engine. The torque delivery of a turbocharged engine is totally different than an NA engine. Peak torque comes in at low RPM and stays until way up in the RPM range. This means the engine can do more work at lower RPM's and the power feels effortless. Also consider that I get 33 mpg out of my car on the hwy. If I had a 300 HP v-8 under the hood i'd be lucky to get 23-24mpg. My Saab 9-5 has 217K miles on it and runs perfectly and still outruns almost any family sedan on the road. If these turbocharged engines are engineer right they last and make impressive power with better fuel econ.

Shutting down cylinders to save fuel is dumb. It causes premature cylinder wear to the "off" cylinders. Honda did it with the Odysseys in the 2000's and they are notorious for oil burning once you get some miles on them. Dumb... love the lab coat look 😍

@B-rad1
@B-rad1 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertt9342 It's normal for a small amount of oil to squeeze past the cylinder rings as the piston cycles, and it combusts with the air and fuel already in the cylinder without a problem. When Honda designed its cylinder deactivation system they didn't account for the quantity of oil that would pool up in the cylinder without combustion actively clearing it out. As a result, the oil would all combust at once when the cylinder was reactivated and cause issues with the piston rings and egr.

It took 3 months to fix and when I got it back, it behaved the same way as when I took it in initially. Sometimes when coming to a stop, it'd feel like you got rear ended. In those 30k miles, I had the roof leak, went through 3 recalls on the brakes, the head end unit would randomly reboot when I got a MS teams notification on my phone while plugged into my iPhone. I sold it and went to Nissan and have been mostly happy since, although the Titan has its quirks as well - not nearly as much as the Silverado. (Edit for typo and update to issue ).

The advantage of this over the Ford 2.7 ecoboost, with fewer cylinders they can make the block, rods, pistons, etc. beefier to handle the boost. It's the main reason why Toyota opted for a 3 cylinder on the Corolla GR. I don't expect this to become the sales leader over the 5.3, and I would personally take the 5.3 if I were buying one because V8 sounds and the LS/LT motors are known to be pretty reliable and have huge aftermarket potential, but it is nice to have options. this engine is going to be awesome in the Colorado/Canyon

Great review informative and covered a few items that are important and usually get missed. This 4cyl when introduced sounded a typical GM mistake, but you shed some light on the positives I prefer inline engines now GM needs to put the inline 6cyl back on the menu and offer it with a base none turbo option! There was a time when a Chevy could be had with a 6cyl a radio and air conditioner without paying for "THE PACKAGE BUNDLE" (KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID-KISS)

This motor doesn't make a lot of sense for most Truck owners but I have been impressed with the tech involved in it. It has been out over a year now and I haven't heard too much bad except the fuel mileage. This motor belongs in a car of some sort just to make things exciting. I would also love to see the intake tech and valvetrain tech in a V8. Spoiling a turbo right off idle is pretty slick. Love my GM stuff.

I get what you're saying about the motor not making much sense in a truck... That is 100% true for people that use it as a truck, the sad thing is most don't anymore. It's more of a fashion statement, in my opinion for a majority of truck and larger SUV drivers. They should definitely put it in a car of some sort but it needs to be RWD as GM would likely put it in a car in a wheel hopping, torque steering, tire spinning FWD pos...

This engine has been a game changer with the gm trucks… I have the 2021 gmc it’s way better in style the only two things I don’t like is that the both engine oil control pump & transmission pump failed within the first 60k miles of ownership and those pump are not located outside, the engine oil one is inside the oil pan and the transmission pump is inside the transmission Along with that, maybe bc the turbo, it’s best not to go over 5k miles oil change intervals Gas milage is great on the highway I’ve gotten 35 mpg and city I’ve had as high as 19 mpg and lowest has been 16mpg Overall great engine choice for those who don’t need a V8 but want a full size truck

Nice review! I imagine the boost you’re lookin for wasn’t there partially due to the fact it has a transfer case, so it adds a bit of weight. The 4x4 can only tow 9100 vs. the 2x which can tow 9600. I drove a 2x and was pleasantly surprised at the launch. I still bought a V8 refresh though. Look forward to seeing more!

The problem with any and all 4cyl engines is that there are times when all intake valves are closed, which messes badly with the PCV system. An 8 cyl will always have at least 1 intake valve open, which makes the PCV system happy.

It’s a 4 cyl. But it’s a HUGE 4 cyl. of the same displacement as their old V6. So I’m sure the bearings are large and beefy. If these engines start failing, I’ll bet it will be something unrelated to it being a 4cyl. It will probably be something on the upper end such as the variable cam timing etc.

Ford pushed Ecoboost hard in my area when the first came out. They were everywhere for a couple of years. Just long enough for them to start having major problems. Tiny turbocharged engines will probably be fine in an urban setting but not so much in a rural environment where they will actually be used for their intended purpose.

Surprised at this trucks capabilities.. perfect for a contractor or DIY homeowner. The 9,000 pound towing capacity is wild for a 2 ton truck. But .. those numbers always seem inflated by all manufacturers. I would think 6,500 would be very comfortable with this size/weight truck. QUESTION... did the truck have a break controller built in with the towing package?

The truck in this review did have an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller. It is located between the start/stop switch and the driver side temp selector. For a 2023 model, it can be selected as an option for $275. It also is included in four packages, two being the "Max Trailering Package" and the "Convenience Package II".

I don't think there are many people on here that really understand how a turbocharger works, the engine does not have to work harder, the engine does not have to rev higher, and the engine is probably just as strong as any other engine, given that it is built for the purpose of being turbocharged. Load on a turbo engine makes it spool faster, make more boost, and make more power farther down on the rpm range. Most n/a engines rev higher than turbocharged engines to make the same power. That being said, I would rather have a smaller cube V8 twin turbo over a 4 cylinder turbo or big cube V8.
