The thing with Karelian pie is that its protected product. Dont know how well i can explain this, but lets try: Theres a protected recepe for Karelian pie, which has to be used exactly like in the book or else you may not distribute them with that name if youre an owner of a bakery or a groceryshop. Its kinda like a protected trademark. The bad thing with that is, you cant make gluten/lactose free Karelia pie and call it that. So most of the times its called a rice pie.
@trumpjongun8831
@trumpjongun8831 5 жыл бұрын
Dough of Karelian pie has a lot more rye flour than dough in Rice pies. That's the biggest difference and real Karelian pie is much better. Atleast 50% of flours have to be rye flour, then it's real Karelian pie. Rice pies from a food stores are pretty bad.

And your description of Dallaspulla is spot on. :) There are already comments about eating lihapiirakka and pasteija heated, but I think they can be had both ways. I've found out that some meat pies are even better when eaten room temperature. Also there is a "version" of lihapiirakka called lörtsy, they come with various fillings, meat-rice, apple, apricot and so on. Some can be found in stores, but the best are usually at market places like Kauppatori and if you ever go to Savonlinna and other parts of eastern Finland then it is a must try. :D

I dont know if you will anymore read this but for karelia pie the traditional way is to put eggbutter on top of it and warm or cold, but also I like to treat it as a bread and just normally put meat, cheese etc on it. Also warm or cold. Also the meatpie/lihapiirakka is more of hot food. Yes you can eat it cold but most will eat warm and maybe with ketchup or split the pie and put meat/cheese in the middle. So there is many ways to enjoy them and you should definetly try. There is one food called grahaminpiirkka which is pretty similar to lihapiirakka but worth the try. You can eat it the same way hot/cold and with extra stuffing or not. :)

Congratulations! 🎊🎉🍻 A little history on karjalanpiirakka: in the olden days people used to make those kinds of piirakka with any kind of porragey fillings, mush potatoes being one of them. Rice used to be fancy, costly, imported stuff. Soooo if you wanted to make fancy karjalanpiirakka for guests or celebrations youd use rice to show how wealthy you were. (Similarly riisipuuro=rice porrage is eaten to celebrate Christmas) For normal everyday meals mushed potatoes or normal porrage would be used. Nowadays we think karjalanpiirakka=riisipiirakka because we wanted the fancy version to be the official kind. To sum it all up the perunapiirakka is the more traditional one. And youd eat it hot with atleast butter to not make it too dry. Fun Finn fact: youd make a whole ton of piirakka at the same time and afterwards for meals youd eat...not karjalanpiirakka. But sultsina!! Its like a kind of finnish tortilla. Youd use some of the piirakka-crust-breads and fry them on the pan and fill them like tortillas. Except the filling would be the leftover porrage. Yummy! (Karelian kitchen used to be mainly porrage and meat and a ton of butter, you know, stuff that clogs your arteries)

Heh, hi. The weird bun was vanhanajan vaniljaherkku viuhka. (Yeah, nice and short name) it's a vanilla filled bun, topped of with buttereyebun filling and streussel (streussel is a mix of flour, butter and sugar) we make them at my work place. 😊

From the sweet side, you missed one very traditional finnish bakery product. Try "korvapuusti". And again home made if possible. Dallaspulla by the way isn´t Finnish at all. I guess it came to bakeries and stores in the eighties. I´ll guess it´s some imported idea from USA or something like that.

What you described as a sausage roll sounds to me like "nakkipiilo". It's basically a baked in sausage/frankfurter and sometimes it also has filling like mustard and pickle sauce etc.

Congrats for the baby! Dallas pulla fav out of these. If you ever go to Kuopio try Hanna Partasen Lihapiirakka (a land renown classic) or the "Lihalörtsy" if you go to Savonlinna (another famous variant of lihapiirakka). Have you tried "Korvapuusti"? It's basically a cinnemon roll, but it's THE cinnemon roll around here. So good...

I remember there was this really tasty mix of _voisilmäpulla_ and _dallaspulla_ and _rahkapulla_ at some market bakery in Malmi Helsinki. Haven't eaten it in years but damn was it good. It was sold as _rahkapulla_ but I've eaten a product with the same name in other places and the taste is different.

Those saltyones tastes better when they are warm, i think. Dallaspulla is one of my favourite also, the filling is made of quark (rahka), vanillabuddingbowder, egg and butter, so what can go wrong when you mix those. :) I hope you can taste different kind of ryebreads, topped with oivariini and cheese, and with some soup ( maybe salmonsoup or hernekeitto) and milk, that is one of best everydaylifetaste you can have. I recommend vaasa's ohuen ohut ruispala for one of tasters, that is one of the best new ryebread i have tasted. Have a nice new year!

Congratulations on the baby! If you like the lihapiirakka, you should try out the small bakery versions of it, they are so much better than the factory produced ones. Maybe you could do a video where you taste different lihapiirakkas from different makers? :D

Hey dave. Coming from Finn. If you thought that "lihapiirakka" from part 5.30 then you should try same product but from kuopio and bakery named "Hannapartanen" those are freaking delicious. So if you thought that lihapiirakka was 6/5 the Hannapartanen version is definedly 9/5. That bakery is specialized to lihapiirakka and bigger version of karjalan piirakka wich is just Riisipiirakka(=ricepie?) and those are also super delicious. If you will taste them I hope you like them as much as I do

You can mod your store bought lihapiirakka (lihis) by splitting it up before microwaving it, and putting cheese, nakkis, etc inside. And add salad and sauces after the heating :)

Those salty pastries are tasty cold too, but I recommend heating them up in oven or micro! Especially Karelian pie. 30 secs in micro then thick layer of butter ontop :D Ketchup goes really well with lihapiirakka, some like mustard as well. Since piirakka dough is 90% butter/fat, heating it up will make it juicy and not so dry. Dallas-pulla is my favorite too! Did you know you can get it as "pitko" as well? A long pulla with looots of the tasty filling! They are usually in the area with other pre-packed cakes. I have to say I am amazed you have not tasted Finnish voisilmäpulla before this. It's like the grandma of all other pullas and very easy to bake at home :)
